The Bakken TrioRachmaninoff - Piano Trio #1Prokofiev - Sonata for Solo ViolinShostakovich - Piano Trio #2

The Twin Cities’ award winning chamber ensemble, the Bakken Trio, presents the first concert of Music on the Hill’s Sixth Season. Revel in the depths of musical expression with chamber works by Russian masters: from the haunting opening of the Shostakovich to the funeral march in the Rachmaninoff to the hoedown in the Prokofiev, you will leave this concert with a new appreciation of music's powerful effect on human emotions.

The second concert of the season features two works for organ and two piano trios. Mary Jo Gothmann performs Franck’s poetic masterwork, his Chorale in A minor for organ. Music on the Hill regular Scott Lykins joins Gothmann in the contrasting comedic Toot Suite by PDQ Bach. Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music for Piano Trio is a light-hearted work, commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in 1987, and inspired by the composer’s stint as the house pianist at Murray’s Restaurant in Minneapolis. The program concludes with Schubert’s monu-mental B-flat Trio.

Karen Kim | Lydia Miller ChoorapuzhaJohanna Torbenson | Thomas RosenbergHaydn - String Quartet Op. 33, No. 2 “Joke”Kodaly - Duo for violin and celloGolijov - TenebraeBeethoven - String Quartet Op. 95

This all-strings program features Kodaly’s difficult, gypsy-like duo for violin and cello, and Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae, a rare work that both evokes pristine beauty and resonates of deep pain, depending upon the listener's perspective. Bookending these gems are pillars of the string quartet repertoire, Haydn’s delightful “Joke” quartet and Beethoven’s disturbing “Serioso.”

The addition of the string bass to the standard string quartet increases the listener's sense of tonal space, allowing Dvorak to weave stunning melodies throughout his boldly lyrical String Quintet in G Major. Virtuosity takes center stage in Rossini’s Duo for cello and double bass, and Halvorsen’s transformation of a theme by Handel into a set of variations for violin and viola. Two short quartets by American composer John Corigliano, known for his music for the film The Red Violin, complete the program.
