A message from the Director of Post-16 Learning:

Welcome to the second issue of our sixth form newsletter with information on progress and keydates for your diaries. As our sixth form plans develop I think there are a number of parallelsbetween this project and the highly successful 2012 Olympic Games.

The games were a huge success through a collaboration of 3groups. The most important group, the athletes, arerepresented by our current year 9 and 10 students who throughhard work and dedication will succeed in winning their grades.

Behind every great athlete are the coaches, these are ourteachers who have the knowledge, experience and tools to giveour students the best opportunities to achieve. Finally andwithout a doubt we have what made the Olympics special, thegames makers, you the parents who work hard behind the scenes to make everything possible, giving the support that is needed to succeed.

With this idea in mind our staff and student steering groups, coupled with our recent parentconsultation evening are all playing an essential part in shaping our sixth form. Many topics areunder discussion including the new building with design ideas for the sixth form social and studyareas, enrichment opportunities and a range of uniform/non-uniform options. Further feedback

and ideas from all these stakeholders will ensure we get it right when the sixth form opens inSeptember 2014.

Parent Sixth Form Information and Consultation Evening March 6th

We were delighted to welcome so many parents and students to the

sixth form information and consultation evening.

During the first part of the evening there were three speakers who

covered a number of issues linking sixth form to choices post 18.

Amanda Hall from Brunel University explained in broad terms what

qualifications universities look for, whether certain A levels carry

more weight and she gave a number of useful pointers to consider

once students are deciding whether to go on to university.

The other two speakers from Imperial College who both sit on the interview panel for future

undergraduates, spoke about their own sixth form education in particular choosing A levels and

what additional experiences can be useful on the UCAS application form.

During the second part of the evening parents and students looked at displays linked to sixth

form at Christs with information on dress code options and enrichments activities. We were joined

by 5 ex year 11 students who were able to answer questions on what to expect from sixth form

life and why they would have benefited from the opportunity to stay at Christs.

The New Building and Expansion of the School

This term we have been working with architects from Astudio and the construction company Wates

to develop the plans both for the new block and the refurbishment of existing areas within school.

The new block will be two storey and will house a new science department, several classrooms,

new larger changing rooms with direct access to the fields, a large activity studio, spacious

performance space and a dedicated sixth form study centre which links to a sixth form social area

and a sixth form garden. All these new facilities will be accessed from a wide central 'street'

running the length of the new building which will give the entire block a light airy feel.

The other major area of development for the school will be the reconfiguration of the existing

canteen and assembly hall. The dining area will be considerably increased and completely

refurbished. In addition, adjacent to this new area will be a new drama studio. Between the newstudio and dining area, there will be a retractable wall to enable us to hold large scale events.

We are still in the process of getting outline planning and expect to have more information on how

that has progressed at the start of next term, but we are still expecting the contractors to move on

    site this summer.

A leading youth charity, the DofE gives allyoung people the chance to develop skillsfor work and life, fulfil their potential and

have a brighter future.DofE programme is a real adventure frombeginning to end. We already run theBronze and Silver awards in school and lookforward to adding Gold.

Gaining a Sports Leaders UK award or qualification can be a life changingexperience. The Sports Leaders UK portfolio contains 13 awards and quali-fications; they form a range of leadership training and involvement withsport, dance and physical activity that match requirements of all ages forsport, for education and for employment.

    Enrichment Opportunities

A motivating and inspiring programme will be an integral part of Christs sixth form. Extra

curricular activities help students learn new skills, grow in confidence and develop into well

rounded individuals. In addition these experiences are valued by employers and will also form

a key part of any university application.

There are a range of very exciting options that we intend to deliver in the new sixth form and

we have outlined just a few of the possibilities here:

University Summer Schools: These take place at many of the lead-

ing universities including Oxford and Cambridge with courses ranging

from creative writing to chemistry. Our sixth formers will get advice

on whats available and how to apply during their first year.

World Challenge Expeditions are bespoke 1 to 6 week adventures which teach life skills, stretch

comfort zones and expand minds outside the classroom. Each expedition fosters team and lead-

ership skills and the pre-expedition programmes see young people involved in planning, fundrais-ing and learning skills to use on the experience of a lifetime! Our students who take up the op-

portunity to participate in a World Challenge expedition will embark on an amazing journey of

    self-discovery.
