News In Brief

Food for Thought

Page 2: Sixth Form Bulletin - fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna ......The Student Focus Centre and the Emotional Wellbeing Champions are promoting the concept of 'The ... guaranteed work

The Student Focus Centre and the Emotional Wellbeing Champions are promoting the concept of 'The

Mind Apple Tree' this year. Our thanks go to 12F for sharing their own thoughts and strategies for positive

mental wellbeing this week by hanging 'mind apples' on the tree. You can see a snapshot of their ideas in

the picture, or you could take the time to go and have a look yourself.

Biomedical Society

On Thursday 20th November, there was a

fantastic turnout for the Biomedical Society's

meeting where students had the opportunity to

explore the medical context of cancer.

"We had a discussion about cancer diagnosis and prevention and were really impressed by all the

views and opinions that were shared. For those applying to science related degrees, it is really

important to know what is happening in the news, so we hope this was helpful for everyone who

came."

Stephanie Stuij & Lucy O'Connell, Year 12

The Lumière Film Society

Since 2002, every third Thursday of November has been designated as a UNESCO observance called

World Philosophy Day. The purpose of the day is to underscore the importance of philosophy in today's

ever-changing world and raise awareness about it as a form of critical though and problem-solving that

can help answer some of life's toughest questions. This week's film screening of 'Sophie's Choice' was a

poignant example of someone grappling with such a question: Sophie is an attractive, emotionally fragile

Polish woman who embarks on simultaneous friendships-edging-into romances in post-World War II New

York with two young men in an apparent attempt to forget a dark secret. As the film progresses, the men

Page 3: Sixth Form Bulletin - fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna ......The Student Focus Centre and the Emotional Wellbeing Champions are promoting the concept of 'The ... guaranteed work

get to learn more about Sophie's appalling experiences in the war, and in particular the nightmarish choice

she was forced to make.

Leighton Park STEAM Event

Our Year 12 Physics students had the opportunity to participate in a STEAM (Science, Engineering, The

Arts, Technology and Maths) workshop at Leighton Park School last Friday. Catering Business Thomas

Franks set pupils the challenge to develop a product which would reduce food waste. Creativity, scientific

knowledge and presentation skills were put to the test during a fierce Dragon’s Den style competition.

"It was a great day as we were able to put our knowledge and skills acquired to the test. This

allowed us to be creative as well as scientific when we were finally exposed to the reality of food

wastage alongside how hard it is to find a realistic solution. It also helped us practise our

presentation skills and it was interesting to work with other people who also studied A-level Physics

as we all had similar interests. Overall, really fun!"

Mutual Motivation

With the pressure of tests, progress reports, coursework, UCAS applications and so much more, it

sometimes feels like you have so much to do that you can't do anything. We are really proud of

Mollie Haines for coming up with the idea of creating a motivational board in the Sixth Form QSA

where students can share thoughts and quotes to help keep each other focused and positive. Our

thanks also go to everyone who has contributed to it so far, in particular Lara Hopkins and Millie

Foreman, who helped Mollie get the initiative started. Please feel free to come and add to the

board, or pop in if you are feeling demotivated to read the words of wisdom that are already there.
