It’s our pleasure to invite you to join your colleagues at the Sixth Annual Wichita State University Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) CE Conference, September 26-27, 2019. This conference is designed to provide advanced practice nurses in both the primary and acute setting the opportunity to further enhance their ability to assess, diagnose and manage health conditions. Our dynamic speakers will share their unique perspectives on the role of the advanced practice nurse in the ever-changing health care environment. Sessions will include pharmacology presentations on managing anxiety and diabetes care, as well as clinically orientated, evidence-based information on the treatment of skin injuries and abscesses, dermatology, infectious diseases, medical coding, heart failure, and much more. We will once again be offering specialty workshops on Thursday afternoon to enrich practice technique and we are excited to include a workshop on advanced assessment for physical therapy. KEYNOTE SPEAKERSSally K. MillerPhD, AGACNP, AGPCNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, Clinical Professor, Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions

Dr. Miller is a certified adult-gerontology acute care, adult-gerontology primary care, and family nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She owns Sahara Family Practice in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she remains active in clinical practice. Dr. Miller is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and a clinical professor at the Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Miller has presented a wide variety of pharmacology and clinical topics at local and national conferences, including the National Conference of Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and the University of Colorado Annual Nurse Practitioner Symposium. In addition, Dr. Miller presents workshops in collaboration with other FHEA associates on the topics of Suturing Basics for Primary and Urgent Care Providers and Suturing: Beyond the Basics, which are held several times per year around the country.

Dr. Miller is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, Academy of Correctional Health Professionals, and the Nevada Nurses’ Association. She has been published in several nurse practitioner journals including Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Biological Research for Nursing, Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy, Journal of Primary Health Care, Journal of Correctional Health Care, Advance for Nurse Practitioners, and many more.

Thomas A. MooreMD, FACP, FIDSA, Physician, Infectious Disease Consultants

Dr. Tom Moore graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with degrees in both Biology and Classics. Following his graduation from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1989, Dr. Moore completed his residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, serving as Chief Resident at The Methodist Hospital. Subspecialty training in infectious diseases was completed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland as a member of the United States Public Health Service. Dr. Moore served as a member of the clinical staff at the NIH and the National Naval Medical Center before returning to his hometown of Wichita, Kansas. With the brief exception of a 2-year stint as Chairman of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Dr. Moore has maintained a busy consultative practice within a single-specialty group of other ID physicians since 1997. In addition to clinical duties, Dr. Moore’s academic duties include an appointment as Clinical Professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita Campus. He has received teaching awards from medical students and residents, and has been

recognized for medical service to the community.

Dr. Moore has been a principal investigator for international research projects involving strongyloidiasis and national trials evaluating treatments for West Nile Virus and fecal transplants for Clostridioides difficile infection. Dr. Moore has authored many papers and textbook chapters on infectious diseases in general and tropical diseases in particular, lecturing both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Moore has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Infectious Disease Society of America, and has been selected to serve as Chairman of the FDA’s Antimicrobial Drug Advisory Committee.

Long story short--Dr. Moore loves his job.2

Evaluation and Treatment of Skin InjuriesRobert Hieger, MSN, FNPCarol O’Mara, DNP, APRN, FNP-CThis interactive session will provide an overview of the many facets of wound healing and wound re-pair techniques. The information provided will cover various methods of proper wound identification, the affected skin layers involved, and wound categoriza-tion. Additionally, appropriate usage of anesthetics, suturing methods, alternative methods of closure, stages of healing, and aftercare procedures will be practiced and explored.

Evaluation and Management of Skin Abscess and InfectionsRobert Hieger, MSN, FNPCarol O’Mara, DNP, APRN, FNP-CThis interactive session will provide the opportu-nity for a hands on experience of evaluating skin infections, the basics of anesthesia management, the opening of abscesses with adequate de-locula-tion and irrigation, and decision making in whether to pack the wound and/or antibiotics usage. Skin anatomy, conservative monitoring, and active explo-ration and management of skin lesions with a focus on the risks/benefits of each method chosen will be discussed.

12 Lead ECG - Basics and BeyondDawn Gosnell, MSN, APRN-CNS, CCRNTune up your 12 Lead ECG interpretation and clinical application skills. Participants will review normal and abnormal changes associated with acute myocardial infarction and other pathologies. The management and therapies for these identified pathologies will be discussed.

Heart Failure - Managing a Complex Clinical SyndromeDawn Gosnell, MSN, APRN-CNS, CCRNParticipants will review and discuss pathophysiology, therapies, and strategies to better manage the chal-lenging patient with a diagnosis of heart failure.

Advanced Assessments with Physical Therapy: KneeMary Faragher, APRNThis session will provide participants the opportunity for hands-on practice of advanced assessment skills and specific exams to improve the diagnostic process for the knee. Practice is aided with demonstration from Doctor of Physical Therapy students. Assess-ment pearls offered to assist in decision making for diagnostic exam. Participants need to come prepared to practice assessments and exams on live models. Time will be allowed for questions and input from the participants.

Ms. Allen will be presenting a case on fever with pancytopenia with diagnosis leading to Ehrlici-osis Tick borne illness. Ms. Baca will be presenting a case of tachycardia, fever, hypertension which leads to a diagnosis and treatment of Thyroid Storm. Both will include sections on pharmacological inter-ventions associated with these cases, lab findings, diagnostics, HPI, differential diagnosis and hospital course.

K-TRACS: What You Should KnowReyne Kenton, BAln this session we will discuss how to enroll in the Kansas Prescription Monitoring Program (K-TRACS), how to use the system as an educational informa-tive tool for prescribers and dispensers. lwill show the group how K-TRACS is used by public health to monitor trends and will discuss the trends and how they effect the citizens of Kansas.

Why Food is the Most Powerful Medicine Ron Hunninghake, MDFood is information to the body. In a world where we are getting more calories and fewer nutrients, the environment of the body is shifting to a state where chronic diseases, once seen only in old age, are showing up in younger individuals. Food can truly be the most powerful form of medicine, if used in a high enough dose over a long enough period of time. We will be discussing the biochem-istry of food and specific compounds that have been shown in the research to help with preventing chronic disease.
