Those who are just must be kind.
— Wisdom 12:19

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind (Wisdom 12:13, 16-19).
Psalm — Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86).
Second Reading — The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27).
Gospel — Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]).
The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
T oday we celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We also celebrate God’s leniency and cle- mency to those who do not follow him. The first reading speaks of God’s power, but tells us that the
powerful one is the one who shows leniency and clemency. The one with power does not have to show off his power, rather it comes through a well-ordered house. The person who deals with people justly does not have to use power rather they use persuasion. We ask God to help us deal with each other with that same patience, and clemency. To give one another the benefit of the doubt as we seek God’s plan in our lives.
This Tuesday there will be a meeting at St. Ann in Lansing on “Renew My Church”. The meeting begins at 1:00 PM and ends at 2:30 PM. This meeting has been scheduled so parish staffs and parishioners can begin to hear about the Renew My Church initiative. Up to this point you have only heard about it from me, or articles from the Cardinal. If you are able to make it you will get background
information on the initiative and why the information on the initiative and why the Archdiocese has begun the process. Please call to reserve a spot. The information is once again in this bulletin.
This week I had a surprise call from the Archdiocese concerning our Teach Who Christ Is projects at St. Kieran. It should not have been a surprise since I have asked for a meeting about a month ago to get our project going. On Wednesday, I met with the rep from Facilities and Construction to go over the scope of the work we are looking at for the Church. This includes sanctuary renovations, installation of a baptismal font, expansion of the choir area, and the renovation of the bathrooms and cry room of the church. The representative thought the work made sense and will begin work with contrac-tors. A tentative date for start of construction will be the second week of January. This will allow us to celebrate the Christmas season in the church before we move into Crawford Hall during the construction. The estimated time for the renovation will be eight weeks. Please continue to pray for the success of this project.
Notes from Fr. John
OUR LADY
OF SORROWS NOVENA
N A Our Lady of Sorrows Novena to pray for the resolution of conflicts all over the world will resume the second Thursday of September at 6:30 p.m.
Do you know someone; a family member, relative or friend, who may be thinking about their relation-ship with GOD. Maybe it’s someone who, like our sock puppet wants to know if He really exists. Maybe someone who wants to explore, building a relationship with God through the Catholic Faith. As Catholics, it is our responsibility to encourage this relationship through our actions as well as our words. If they have asked you questions about your faith, then you must be a good influence in their life and all they need is for you to invite them. If you know of someone who may be ready to explore our faith, ask them to call our RE office or email me at [email protected], and we will get back to them to discuss the RCIA program at St. Kieran. Remind them they are never under any obligation to join our church unless they are ready.

Fr. Raphael, our Comboni Missionary friend of St. Kieran since 2006, will be here to celebrate the 8:00 AM and 10:00
AM Sunday Masses on August 13.
