Introduction to six sigma

Six sigma is a highly structured strategy for acquiring, assessing, and applying customer, competitor, and enterprise intelligence for the purposes of product, system or enterprise innovation and design.

Six Sigma is a proven systematic approach to improve measurable results for any organization

Page 5: six sigma mba

Historical back groundSix Sigma is a business

management strategy originally developed by Motorola in 1986 in USA. Founder of six sigma was bill smith.

Six Sigma Affects Six Areas Fundamental to Improving a Company’s Value

1. Process Improvement2. Product & Service Improvement3. Investor Relations4. Design Methodology5. Supplier Improvement6. Training & Recruitment

Page 7: six sigma mba

Methods Six Sigma projects follow two project

methodologies DMAIC DMADV

Page 8: six sigma mba

Methods DMAIC is used for projects aimed at

improving an existing business process. The DMAIC project methodology has

five phases:Define the problem, the voice of the

customer, and the project goals, specifically.

Measure key aspects of the current process and collect relevant data.

Page 9: six sigma mba

Methods Analyze the data to investigate and

verify cause-and-effect relationships. Determine what the relationships are, and attempt to ensure that all factors have been considered. Seek out root cause of the defect under investigation.

Page 10: six sigma mba

Methods Improve or optimize the current

process based upon data analysis using techniques such as design of experiments or mistake proofing, and standard work to create a new, future state process. Set up pilot runs to establish process capability.

Page 11: six sigma mba

Methods Control the future state process to

ensure that any deviations from target are corrected before they result in defects. Implement control systems such as statistical process control, production boards, and visual workplaces, and continuously monitor the process.

Page 12: six sigma mba

Methods DMADV is used for projects aimed at

creating new product or process designs.

The DMADV project methodology have features five phases.

Define design goals that are consistent with customer demands and the enterprise strategy.

Page 13: six sigma mba

Methods Measure and identify CTQs

(characteristics that are Critical To Quality), product capabilities, production process capability, and risks.

Page 14: six sigma mba

Methods

Analyze to develop and design alternatives, create a high-level design and evaluate design capability to select the best design.

Page 15: six sigma mba

Methods Design details, optimize the design,

and plan for design verification. This phase may require simulations.

Page 16: six sigma mba

Methods Verify the design, set up pilot runs,

implement the production process and hand it over to the process owner.

How do we design six sigma

Page 18: six sigma mba

How do we design six sigmaDefine : customer requirements and goals

for the process product and servicesMeasure : and match performance to

customer requirements. Analyze : and asses the design for the

process product and services.Design : and implement the array of new

process required for the new process product and services.

Verify : results and maintain performance.

Stages of six sigmaThere are five stages of six sigma1. Defining2. Measuring3. Analyzing4. Improving5. Controlling

Roles : Executives

EXECUTIVES: organization should have a Six

Sigma council or equivalent body to oversight and represent Six Sigma. The executive will be concerned with corporate level, goals and targets.

Page 22: six sigma mba

Roles : Champion

CHAMPION: Can be used to describe anybody

who ‘champions’ Six Sigma, but usually refers to a senior executive who takes responsibility for Six Sigma projects and oversees, supports, finds resources, and monitors progress.

Page 23: six sigma mba

Roles : Master Black Belt

MASTER BLACK BELT: An expert in six sigma

management responsible for six sigma monitoring and training for the technical and professional standards of six sigma. In companies there is only one master black belt for every thousands employees.

Page 24: six sigma mba

Roles : Black Belt

BLACK BELT: Black belts are experts in six

sigma who manages six sigma projects. In companies there is only one black belt for every hundreds employees.

Page 25: six sigma mba

Black Belt Act as Breakthrough Strategy

experts and be Breakthrough Strategy enthusiasts.

Stimulate Champion thinking. Identify the barriers. Lead and direct teams in project

execution. Report progress to appropriate

leadership levels.

Page 26: six sigma mba

Black Belt Solicit help from Champions when

needed. Influence without direct authority. Determine the most effective

tools to apply. Prepare a detailed project

assessment during the Measurement phase.

Page 27: six sigma mba

Black Belt Get input from knowledgeable

operators, first-line supervisors, and team leaders.

Teach and coach Breakthrough Strategy methods and tools.

Manage project risk. Ensure that the results are

sustained.

Page 28: six sigma mba

Roles : Green BeltsGREEN BELTS: Green belts are similar to black

belts but are less qualified particularly in statistical methods. They can lead a smaller projects under the supervisions on black belts.

Page 29: six sigma mba

Green Belt Function as Green Belts on a part-time

basis, while performing their regular duties.

Participate on Black Belt project teams in the context of their existing responsibilities.

Learn the Six Sigma methodology as it applies to a particular project.

Continue to learn and practice the Six Sigma methods and tools after project completion.

Page 30: six sigma mba

Roles : process owner

PROCESS OWNER: The manager or the supervisor of

the section most concerned with the projects. They will b responsible for the process after six sigma process is completed.

Page 31: six sigma mba

Roles :six sigma team

SIX SIGMA TEAM: The people who work for the six

sigma project under the supervision of black belt. Six sigma team is best to kept small six people or less.

Levels of Six Sigma“Sigma” means standard deviation and

therefore Six Sigma means six standard deviations.
