Swami Sivananda (1887–1963) Great yoga master and physician of modern India, he lived for over 30 years in a hermitage on the banks of the Ganges River at the foot of the Himalayas.

Swami Vishnudevananda (1927–1993)Student of Swami Sivananda and founder of the InternationalSivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. Worldwide authority forHatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Author of the classical work The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga.

The breath deepens, body and mind relax, the flexibityof the joints increases, the senses regenerate and expandand the mind rediscovers natural contentment and peace.

VEDANTAThe Vedas are humanity’s most ancient writings and are thephilosophical foundation of the yoga teachings. Vedantaexplains how man can reunite with the immutable reality of the Soul. In this experience of deep inner peace, there is no longer any distinction between body and mind and the restless searching for love, success and happiness hasfound its end.

THE VEGETARIAN DIETLight, nutritious, freshly prepared meals are an integral part of the yoga vacation. The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres draw on more than 50 years’ experience of teaching in the East and West. Step-by-step menu plans help lead you to a more balancednutrient intake, increased vitality and better digestion. Meals are served buffet-style and are made from fresh, organic ingredients using only pure oils. During your stay you will enjoy a variety of whole grains, carefully cookedvegetables, a nice variety of side salads, expertly preparedpulses, dairy products from the best organic dairy farms in Tyrol, home-made bread, jams and stewed fruits as well as imaginative desserts. In the Ayurveda courses (see p. 42) you’ll learn to choose the right food combinations and quantities based on yourbody type.

Nestled amidst sparkling brooks, pure mountain lakes anddeep, silent forests, the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta RetreatHouse was opened in 1998. Ever since, people from aroundthe world have taken part in the time honoured dailyprogramme, finding their way back to a holistic lifestyle in harmony with nature and the fresh mountain air. Experience for yourself the many benefits of yoga – increasedresistance to stress, greater lung capacity, weight loss,

regeneration and improved function of all body systems.Today in the West there is no doubt about the healing andpreventive benefits of yoga. Yoga gently brings body andmind into harmony with the laws of nature and illumines the search for a deeper meaning in life. Everyone can practice yoga, no matter their age, culture or religion.

THE YOGA ASANA CLASSESThe morning and afternoonyoga asana classes consist of breathing exercises, Sun Salutation, basic postures and deep relaxation under the guidance of an ex perienced instructor. Individual corrections and

detailed instructions allow participants to perform theexercises carefully and in a relaxed manner. Flexibility and mobility are enhanced. Newcomers and ’rusty’ studentsare encouraged to practice simple variations of the basicposes. People with health issues such as back problems or general exhaustion receive the appropriate guidance.

Advanced participants are encouraged to try classicalvariations and hold the poses longer.Weather permitting, the yoga classes are held outside on ourbeautiful cedar platform under large sun shades. Enjoy thespectacular view of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range.

MEDITATIONThe morning and evening meditation sessions are the mostpeaceful hours at the Retreat House. The practical guidancefor positive thinking and mental relaxation combined withconcentration exercises gradually lead to inner peace. Thechanting of Sanskrit mantras (healing and energising soundcombinations) deepens the experience of peace. A readingfrom yoga texts gives inspiring insights into yoga philosophyand psychology.

The universal science of yoga has been practised for thousands of years in India, where people have retreated to the peace of the Himalayas for yoga and meditation.

International Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Courses

LIVING AND LEARNING YOGASwami Vishnudevananda developed the first yoga teachers’ training course (TTC) in the West in 1969 as partof his vision of universal peace: The more people experience peace within, the more this peace will manifestin outward action. In this way, a glow of peace envelops the world:

In this four-week intensive course, the student is exposed to all aspects of the practice, theory and philosophyof yoga. Today, the course is directed by Yoga Acharyas who were personally trained by Swami Vishnudevanandaand who have practised and taught yoga for many years.

After successfully passing the final examination, the participants receive the internationally recognisedcertificate of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. There are over 1,000 graduates each year. To continue your training, we recommend the Advanced Yoga Teachers’ Training Course (ATTC) and the Hatha Yogaintensive course (Sadhana Intensive), as well as various further training programmes for yoga teachers at the Retreat House.
