• خزانات المياه
مثلث خزانات المياه الموجودة في الموقع والتي يبلغ قطر الواحد منها 70 متر وعمق 14 متر عائقا حتم التعامل معه بحرص للحفاظ عليه وعلى اتزانه وكذلك فإن كالً من المحددات اإلنشائية وطرق حماية وعزل أسطح الخزانات مثلتاً تحدياً للتصميم.
• عناصر فرش الموقع واإلضاءة
تم تصميم كل عناصر فرش الموقع وتم تنفيذها بأيدي حرفيين محليين وقد شملت العناصر المقاعد والنوافير ونوافير الشرب وألعاب األطفال والبرجوالت وأعمدة اإلضاءة.
المفهوم التصميمي
إن الغرض األساسي من المشروع هو توفير مسطحات خضراء مفتوحة لسكان المناطق المجاورة ولقاطني القاهرة بصفة عامة وكذلك استغالل الحرفيين والعمالة المحلية في إنشاء المشروع لتحسين أحوالهم االقتصادية.
تم استلهام الفكرة األساسية من المحيط التراثي للقاهرة فأتى في صورة تعبير متميز عن أسس تصميم الحدائق اإلسالمية.يعتبر محور المشاة الرئيسي هو العنصر األساسي في المشروع وهو يقطع الحديقة من الشمال إلى الجنوب ويميزه أرضيات هندسية
يتخللها العديد من العناصر المائية المختلفة ويحفه على جانبية أماكن جلوس هادئة وحدائق منخفضة وبساتين للموالح والمانجو.وتأكيداً على التواصل مع المعالم التراثية المحيطة فقد تم توجيه محور المشاة الرئيسي ناحية مسجد محمد على وقلعة صالح الدين
كمعلم تاريخي ذو تميز بصري عالي. ولزيادة التالحم مع المحيط المباشر للحديقة فقد تم استخدام بعض بوابات السور التاريخي كمدخل للحديقة.

الموقع
يقع المشروع في قلب منطقة القاهرة اإلسالمية التاريخية وتبلغ مساحته 30 هكتار وقد كان منذ أواخر العصر المملوكي مكباً للنفايات.
يحيط النسيج العمراني للقاهرة اإلسالمية بالمشروع من الناحية الشمالية والغربية كما يحده شرقاً مقابر مملوكية - مدينة الموتى- وطريق صالح سالم.
التحديات التصميمية والتنفيذية
• السور التاريخي
عزز السور التاريخي بطوله البالغ 1300 متر والذي بناه صالح الدين في القرن الثالث عشر فكرة استعراض التراث القديم للقاهرة وزاويا الرؤية من داخل الحديقة وكذلك فكرة إعادة إحياء ممشى السور التاريخ ، وقد تم إزالة الردم عنه ضمن أعمال الحفر للميول
الغربية.
.• النباتات
أعد المصمم قائمة بالنباتات المحلية والمتأقلمة واألحجام المطلوبة عند الزراعة وذلك ألكثر من 650 نبات تمت زراعتها بالمشروع.وشكلت الزراعة تحدياً نظراً لطبيعة التحليل الكيميائي للتربة والتي أظهرت تدني مستوى المغذيات وارتفاع نسبة الملوحة ومحتوى
كربونات الكالسيوم ، وبالتالي فإن الحاجة إلى تحسين التربة كان موضوعاً هاماً لمساعدة النباتات على الحياة.وقد قام مطور المشروع بإقامة مزرعة لألشجار المطلوبة قبل تنفيذ المشروع حيث أن أعداد وأحجام األشجار المطلوبة لم تكن
متوفرة في السوق.
• التربة والخصائص الجيوتقنية
أظهرت دراسات التربة أعماق تتراوح بين 30-40 متر من النفايات ومخلفات الردم وتربة شديدة السمية والملوحة وهي غير صالحة إلغراض اإلنشاء أو الزراعة وقد تم تنفيذ أعمال كبيرة للحفر والردم من أجل منع هبوط التربة وللحفاظ على السور
التاريخي وخوازيق خزانات المياه من تسرب مياه الري والمياه السطحية وقد تم وضع طبقة غير منفذه من الطين بسمك 50سم على عمق 2 متر تحت كامل مسطح الحديقة باإلضافة إلى شبكة كاملة للصرف تحت السطحي.
وقد تم استخدام قواعد لبشة وخوازيق ألساسات المباني وكذلك فإن الطرق والممرات تم بناؤها على ردم إنشائي.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
LOCATION
The project lies in the heart of the historic Islamic district of Cairo; a 30 hectare site that was vacant because of its use as a dump site since the late Mamluk period. The land is surrounded from the north and west by the medieval Islamic fabric of Cairo. To the east lies a Mamluk cemetery, City of the Dead, and one of Cairo’s main roads, Salah Salem.
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES
• HISTORICAL WALL
Uncovered during the earthwork of the site’s western slope, the 1,300 meter long Ayyubid wall built by Saladin in the 13th century was utilized as a panoramic platform to view the heritage of old Cairo, and to create a historic wall promenade along the park edge.
• PLANT MATERIALS
The designer developed an indigenous and adaptive plant list for the park, detailing species and required sizes at installation. More than 650 plant species were planted in Al-Azhar Park. However; chemical property tests confirmed low levels of nutrients, high levels of al-kalinity, very high levels of salinity and Ca CO3 content. Thus, the need for appropriate soil conditioning was a major issue for some plants to survive. The client used the information to establish a plant nursery well before construction.
• SOIL & GEOTECHNICAL ASPECTS
The soil investigation revealed a profile of 30-40 meters of garbage, construction debris and highly toxic/salty soils unsuitable for both construction and planting. Mass earth mov-ing and soil treatment took place to create a layer of good soil. An impermeable clay layer 0.5 meters thick, placed two meters beneath the top soil, along with a complete sub-surface drainage system.

• WATER RESERVOIRS
The three existing water reservoirs each 70 meters in diameter and 14 meters deep in-creased the constraints and risks to the infrastructure. Landscaping the three water tanks tops required careful consideration of the tanks’ structural limitations and waterproofing.
• SITE FURNITURE & LIGHTING
Due to the lack of commercial landscape products in Egypt, park furniture, lighting, bol-lards, seats, trash receptacles, drinking fountains, play equipment, fountains and pergolas were custom designed by the landscape architect and manufactured by local artisans.
DESIGN CONCEPT
The design intent was to provide green open space for the residents of adjacent districts and the greater Cairo population, and to utilize local artisans and laborers in the construc-tion of the park as an effort to improve their economic status. The design theme was de-rived from the contextual historical Islamic heritage of old Cairo, a distinctive interpretation of the Islamic gardens design criteria. The main pedestrian spine is the key feature of the park, running north-south with a view of Cairo›s citadel and Mohamed Ali Mosque. It is characterized by sophisticated geometric pavement patterns, accentuated by various water features, and bordered on both sides by secluded sitting areas, sunken gardens, and citrus orchards. To further integrate the Park context, the original Ayyubid wall gates serve as a major en-trance from Al Darb Al Ahmar district.
