ArchitecturaLight

Naturally architecture is as distinctive asthe individuals creating it. The goal isalways to express the individuality of thebuildings owner through the architecture.Consultants and engineers, who collabora-te closely with the architects, developdesign solutions for the technical appara-tus of a building, which requires creativeand future orientated solutions. Modernlighting, as the element which allows peo-ple to experience a buildings architectureand character, has to meet multi–facettedspecifications.

Technical performance in terms of glarecontrol and efficiency as well as ease ofinstallation or electronic control equipmentare primary or secondary features of a ligh-ting product. As the architectural influenceon a building rises, attributes like formaldesign, aesthetics and light atmospherestart playing a major role.

Architecture and Light

Modern lighting design requires not onlyhigh performing fittings, it is also askingfor luminaire systems, which can be alig-ned to various specifications. Ideally thesesystems are an instrument for a largevariety of applications. Considering archi-tectural issues the physical size of a lumi-naire should be as small as possible tomaintain minimal impact on the aesthe-tics of a space.

The lighting task normally determines thetype of luminaire and its light distribu-tion. The mounting method (recessed, sur-face..) depends on the type of ceiling. Inorder to decrease the height of each storeythe void depth of false ceilings shrinksdrastically and the demand is for increa-singly lower profile fittings. Many lightingconcepts are based on surface or pendantfittings in order to take advantage of indi-rect light components to create a soft lightatmosphere. Not every floor plan is ortho-gonal. Curved or polygonal outlines arebecoming typical elements of modernbuilding structures. Appropriate lightingdesigns therefore give preference to lumi-naires with a round or square shape,which feature rotationally symmetricallight distributions.

A big challengeThese can be positioned freely, indepen-dent from the ground axis, and their per-ceived bulk is much smaller than linearfluorescent products. Modern equippedbuildings very often feature fire protectionsystems with smoke detector and sprinklerunits, presence detection, PA–systems orair conditioning systems. As a result, cei-lings appear quite cluttered by the varietyof different devices installed. From anarchitectural perspective the possibility ofintegrating devices like these into light fit-tings in order to clean up ceilings is verydesirable. The same applies to the oppor-tunity of incorporating two different lightdistributions or sources within one lumi-naire’s body.

With our new downlight product line,Lunis_R, Siteco accepts the challenge ofmodern lighting design. We have created aproduct family, based on T5-R circularlamps, which is a modular system suitablefor various applications rather than a col-lection of single product solutions.

The development of new generations ofluminaires is quite often triggered byinnovations in the field of lamp technolo-gy. The introduction of linear tubular fluo-rescent lamps featuring a diameter of only16mm (T5-technology) led to the designand marketing of innovative luminaires. Inaddition to the T5 linear lamps, lamps fea-turing a circular shape with a 16mm tubediameter (T5-R) have recently becomeavailable. This allows for the developmentand production of small and compact fit-tings offering an alternative luminairestyle. As a matter of fact, this specific lamptype is anything but easy to control. Toachieve good results requires significanttechnical expertise. Siteco demonstratesthis in an impressive manner by applyingadvanced methods of lamp temperaturemanagement.

Achieving high technical specificationsvery often conflicts with creating stylishluminaire designs. Featuring sufficientglare control (e.g. CAT2) and a high effi-ciency on one side whilst minimising thefittings dimensions to achieve aestheticproportions on the other side is a typicalexample of this dilemma. Due to a veryclose and generative collaboration withour design consultant SYNTHESISDESIGN&VISUALISATION Ltd, Manchester,UK and due to the application of state-of-the-art 3D design methods Siteco achieveda trade-off on a fairly high level. We areproud to offer not only products whichconvince by their performance but also bytheir aesthetics.

A products functionality is crucial for itsacceptance in the market. Therefore weinvested a lot of creativity to secure aneasy to handle installation and mainte-nance process. An example: fast-lockfixings reduce the installation time to aminimum without the use of tools andmake the fitting suitable for nearly all ceiling types.Another example: the C-louver light con-trol insert can be attached through simplesnap fixing.

Many lighting problems are characterisedby their individual specifications. But thisdoes not always establish the need forcustomised lighting solutions. A smartmodular system offers the opportunity ofconfiguring individual solutions or vari-ants quickly and in an uncomplicatedmanner saving both: money and time.

Always the right choice: the modular downlight system Lunis_R

Surface mounted and pendant platformsare also available with an indirect lightcomponent. As a special decorative featurethe colour of the indirect projected lightcan be changed by the attachment ofColor–Shutters at the back of the light fit-ting. Again, these Color Shutters can bespecified as a separate accessory.

The centre area of Lunis_R downlights iscapable of integrating a variety of functio-nal elements, helping to clean up ceilings.Starting with standard decorative coversthese can be additional downlight sources,air handling devices, sensors, detectors,sprinklers units or loudspeakers. You willfind a selection of prepared centre moduleslater on in this brochure. Please note thatfor surface and pendant versions the selec-tion of possible centre modules is limited.A bayonet–lock central ring is employed asa universal interface detail. As the individu-al requirements in each project differ, wewish to welcome our clients to developoptimised alignments to their particularproblems based on our platforms in a closecollaboration.

Lunis_R downlights are based on a specia-lised reflector system for T5-R circularlamps with a diameter of 300mm, ratingeither 40W/3200 Lumens or 55W/4200Lumens. In combination with high effi-ciency optical accessories, the fittings deli-ver a sufficient lumen package for mostapplications.

There are three different product plat-forms available suitable for either reces-sed, surface or pendant mounting, featu-ring lightweight construction in order toreduce ceiling load. The light distributionof a fitting is determined by the light con-trol insert - selected as a separate easy-to-attach accessory.

An extreme wide beam distribution isachieved by employing the opal glass dif-fuser. The C-Louver allows for VDU applica-tion in accordance with CAT2 and the col-lector lens insert provides an accentuateddistribution, for application e.g. in higherceiling spaces.

Decorative covers made from plain or per-forated aluminium sheet are the mostcommon type of centre modules. These areavailable painted either white or silvergrey. Please take care to specify the colourof the cover with reference to the colour ofeither the surface or pendant luminaireplatform. As a special architectural featurethe centre module "Aluminium passpar-tout” is capable of integrating a piece ofceiling material in the centre area, in orderto reduce the obtrusion of the ceiling bythe fitting to a minimum. The luminaireappears as a ring shape rather than a diskshape.

Centre modulesThe open centre of the circular lamp provi-des the opportunity of integrating additio-nal elements, which we call centre modu-les. The bayonet locked centre ring is thekey detail giving a universal interface bet-ween the luminaire platform and the cho-sen centre element. In order to completethe order code of a Lunis_R luminaire plat-form the type of centre module needs tobe specified. Please note that for surfaceand pendant versions the selection of pos-sible centre modules is limited.

Decorative cover

Light atmosphere is an important issue formodern lighting design. It is influenced bythe characteristics of the luminaires usedand the light colour of the sourcesemployed. It is a well documented factthat the acceptance of light and the well-ness of people being exposed to it are verymuch dependant upon the light atmos-phere. The requirements can change indi-vidually, over time or depending on whatone is actually doing in the space. Withrespect to this, advanced lighting conceptsfeature dynamic light control by e.g. provi-ding individual dimming. Once differenttypes of lamps with different light colours(e.g. fluorescent + tungsten halogen) andfittings with different distributions incombination with the input of naturaldaylight can be regulated individually alighting designer gains total control overthe light atmosphere. By specifying down-light centre modules Lunis_R can operateas an advanced instrument to control lightatmosphere.

The fluorescent light of the T5-R lamp mer-ges with the light emitted from the centraldownlight source, which can be compactfluorescent, metal halide or tungsten halo-gen lamps or light emitting diodes (LED).The centre modules are prepared for elec-trical mains connection through separateterminal blocks. All gear is HF type andcomes in a separate Lunis – style gear box.Depending on the depth of the ceilingvoid, Lunis_R recessed platforms can beequipped with any type of centre down-light, whereas with the surface and pen-dant platform this is restricted to LED- orQT14 downlight modules.

The downlight module itself consists oftwo elements, which again, have to be spe-cified separately in two steps: these arethe system lamp/reflector (1) plus thedecorative cover element (2). Please notethat the HIT lamp/reflector system requi-res a mandatory safety glass cover. To specify e.g. a downlight TC-TEL 26W withdecorative blue glass ring, select the code"3V” from table 1 and complete with thecode "L” from table 2 resulting in the com-plete code "3VL”, which can then be usedas an extension to any recessed platformorder code.

Lunis_R luminaires consist of three ele-ments: the recessed, surface or pendantplatform, the centre module and the lightcontrol insert. The order code of the plat-form needs to be completed by the code ofthe centre module. Additionally the lightcontrol insert needs to be ordered as a sepa-rate accessory.

Light control inserts

The C-Louver light control insert allowLunis_R to be used in VDU environments.Due to highly sophisticated designmethods the louver features CAT2 glarelimitation whilst maintaining a high effi-ciency of nearly 60%.

To allow for maximum flexibility the lightdistribution of Lunis_R fittings is determi-ned by light control inserts which arehandled as separate accessories.

The glass diffuser is made from safetyglass with a frosted finish. It creates a verysoft, mineral green shimmering light withan extreme wide distribution.

This light control insert provides an accen-tuated light distribution. The prismaticlens, made from acrylic, is also suitable forlighting higher ceiling spaces.

Collector lens

Lunis_R surface and pendant platformsoptionally come with an indirect lightcomponent. For decorative effect thecolour of the indirect light component canbe modified by the attachment of colourshutter elements at the back of the fitting.A colour shutter kit comprises three seg-ments each covering 12 0 degrees, whichtogether form a complete ring at the backof the reflector. The RGB version comeswith Red, Green and Blue segments to cre-ate a multi-coloured effect. The black shut-ter kit is required to avoid light leakagefrom the reflector back in recessed situa-tions, in applications where light spillsinto the ceiling void is unacceptable.

Mounting- and electrical accessories

With this accessory kit Lunis_R surfacemounted platforms can be used in asuspended configuration, via three steelcords. To make the kit as unobtrusive aspossible it comes with a mains connectingcable with transparent insulation. Emergency optionsRecessed platforms can be equipped withemergency light converters with 1hr or 3hr battery packs. To specify 1hr operationplease add the extension -02, and for 3hroperation add -03 to the completed ordercode of the luminaire (platform + centremodule).An additional emergency light with an E14lamp holder can be installed in any type ofplatform. Please check the particular tech-nical solution prior to specification. To spe-cify an E14 emergency light please add theextension -0 1to the completed order codeof the fitting.

To make sure Lunis_R can be installed inany ceiling type we offer a broad selectionof mounting accessories.For installation in cast concrete ceilingsthe specialised concrete casting box needsto be installed prior to casting. A panelmounting plate allows for a proper fit inpanel type ceilings and the plaster ringensures a clean mounting hole. For mini-mum duty ceiling tiles a T-support bracketcan be used for reinforcement.
