• RubaKatrib(b.Baltimore;livesinNewYork),Curator,MoMAPS1,NewYork.WithsignificantexperienceacrosstheAmericas,theteamissupportedbyCuratorialAdvisorNaomiBeckwith,MarilynandLarryFieldsCuratorattheMuseumofContemporaryArtChicago,andbythecuratorialteamatSITESantaFe.ThetitleofSITElines.2018referencesArgentinewriterJulioCortázar’s1946shortstory“Casatomada,”whichfollowstwoshut-insiblingsdevotedtothecareoftheirancestralhome.Asamysteriousandunnamedpresencebeginstooccupypartsofthehouse,theyareeventuallyforcedoutontothestreetwithoutanymaterialpossessions.Theexhibitionplaysofftheambiguitiesofthisstory,addressingthereciprocalandcomplexrelationshipbetweentheoneswhostayandtheoneswholeave,andthosethatbelongandthosethatareoutliers.

Questioningnotionsofprivateproperty—ofthebody,mind,land,andculture––theexhibitionaskshowboundariesaredissolvedand/orviolated.Whydowecreatethesedivisions?Whatmarksthedifferencebetweenguestandtrespasser?Whoisthehostandwhoisthevisitor,andwhenaretheserolesreversed?
StephanieTaylor,PressRelease#1StephanieTaylor(USA)isaLosAngeles–basedartistwhoexplorestherelationshipsbetweensoundsandobjects,creatingsongsamidstinstallations,whichconnectvarioussubjectswithinstories.ForSITElines,thepressreleaseisformulatedbyTaylorintheformofasong.Sheenlistsachorusoffivevocaliststohighlightunderlyingvowelsequencesandrepeatingsoundswithinthetextoftherelease.Theresultingsongdeliversaccurateinformationabouttheupcomingbiennialthroughanawkwardcombinationofinstitutionalpromotion,languageexploration,andcommunicationstrategies.FollowingthereleaseofPressRelease#1,Taylorwillrecordadditionalsongsthatwillbeissuedleadinguptoandthroughouttherunoftheexhibition.Attheclosingevent,Taylor’ssongswillbeperformedinaliveconcert.
MicrositeTheSITElines.2018teamhasengagedthegraphicdesignstudioVenezia-Bronktodesignamicrositethathostsinformationandartworkrelatedtothebiennial.Launchinginfall2017,thesiteisanessentialcomponentoftheexhibitionandwillcreateacontinuousconnectionoffeedbackbetweenitsphysicallocation,time-basedprograms,andcontentproducedspecificallyfortheWeb.Theplatformwillprovideearlydetailsabouttheshowandongoinginformationaboutprogrammingandevents,andwillfunctionasadigitalrepositoryforcommissionedtexts.ArtistsintheExhibitionTheexhibitionwillfeatureworksbyapproximatelytwenty-fiveartists,manyofwhomwilldevelopnewcommissionsthatincludegallery-basedworksandtime-basedperformances.AbouttheBiennialCuratorialTeam

SITElinesisaradicalrethinkingofSITESantaFe’ssignaturebiennialexhibition.WhenSITESantaFeopenedin1995,itlaunchedwhatwasthentheonlyinternationalbiennialofcontemporaryartintheUnitedStates,andoneofonlyahandfulofbiennialsaroundtheworld.Intheover20yearssince,thelandscapeoftheinternationalcontemporaryartworldhasexpanded,bringingaproliferationofbiennialsworldwide.
Lookingtoreinvigoratethebiennialmodel,in2011,SITEreimaginedSITE’sbiennialexhibitiontofocusontheWesternHemisphere,bringnewperspectivestothecuratorialtable,andbuildanewinfrastructureatSITEtosupportlong-termresearchandnewartistcommissions.ManylayersofhistoryareembeddedhereinNewMexico.FirstNativeAmericanland,thenaSpanishKingdom,aMexicanProvince,andaUSTerritory,allbeforestatehood,NewMexicoisamicrocosmoftheAmericas.SITEisuniquelysituatedtoexplorethisterritoryoftheAmericas—itisadirectionthatisspecifictoourvision,place,andhistory.SITElineslaunchedin2014withitsfirstexhibitiontitledUnsettledLandscapes,organizedbyJanetDees,IreneHofmann,CandiceHopkins,andLuciaSanroman.SITElines.2016’seditionmuchwiderthanaline,wasorganizedaroundideasbroughttogetherbyateamoffivecurators−RocíoAranda-Alvarado,KathleenAsh-Milby,PipDay,PabloLeóndelaBarra,andKikiMazzucchelli.SITElinesisadynamicpartofSITESantaFe’syear-roundexhibitionandpublicprogramming.SITElinesProgramming:Fouryearsago,SITEestablishedSITECenter—anexpandedactivityofSITE’sEducationDepartmentthatgeneratesprogrammingandspecialprojectsrelatedtoourSITElinesbiennialexhibitions.SITECenterprogramscreatecontinuitybetweenbiennials,hostartistsforresidencies,anddevelopcommunity-basedprojectsthatcreatemeaningfulengagementwithlocalaudiences.SITECenterprogrammingforSITElines.2018isbeingplannedthroughouttherunoftheshowandwillincludea
rangeofpublicprograms(lectures,performances,panels)andartist-ledcommunityengagedprojectsintendedtoexpandtheexperienceandreachoftheexhibition.AboutSITESantaFeSITESantaFeopenedin1995topresentwhatwasthentheonlyinternationalbiennialofcontemporaryartintheUnitedStates,andoneofonlyahandfulofbiennialsaroundtheworld.Fromtheverybeginning,SITEestablishedacommitmenttoarisk-takingandvisionaryperspectivethatcontinuestodriveitsprogramstoday.Year-roundexhibitionsandeducationalprogramsencouragethecreativeandintellectualpotentialoftheaudienceandupholdtheregion’straditionoffosteringavant-gardeart.Asaninstitutionwithayear-roundcontemporaryartprogram,SITEhostsanArt&Cultureseriesoflecturesandperformances,aswellasanextensiveeducationandoutreachprogramforlocalschools,allofwhichattractover20,000local,nationalandinternationalvisitorsannually.Sinceitslaunch,SITEhaspresentedover100exhibitions—includingtenbiennials—ofworksbyover750internationalartists.sitesantafe.org
