Sitting directly across from the campus of City College of San Francisco, 270 Judson Ave. rests at the center of a thriving academic community, but possesses an identity independent of this mini acropolis. In addition to existing in the presence of extraordinary views of Mt. David, McLaren Water Tower, and glimpses of the bay, the lot lies in San Francisco’s neighborhood Sunnyside—a historically rich piece of the Bay Area. The investor Behrend Joost made the land a major asset after purchasing it from Leland Stanford, for it sat on the route of his and other investors’ railway project: San Francisco’s first interurban electric street car line (The San Francisco and San Mateo Railway).

In 1907 San Francisco held its first car show and by 1925, the automobile was piece of technology wanted by many. (Interstate 280 was added to the Interstate Highway System on September 15, 1955.)

Within the last century modes of transportation, in San Francisco and more specifically in Sunnyside surrounding 270

Judson, have evolved rapidly.

The Railway and Evolution of Transportation in Sunnyside

On December 28, 1912 MUNI began its service to the community with the A Line.

On April 27, 1892 The San Francisco and San Mateo Railway celebrated its Grand Opening.

In 1992, cyclists of the SF Bike Coalition made their presence known with the beginning of a public monthly ride known as Critical Mass that fueled the demand for an organized system of bike routes.

Bart’s Balboa Part Station began servicing the public on December 28, 1973.

The Next Step

Studying, layering, and collating the evolution of transportation surrounding 270 Judson has provided me with a skeleton to now explore in the three dimensional. Can I extend certain lines? Resize the collation of pathways? Eliminate pathways or focus on a certain area of them? These are all question I will continue to explore in digital mediums, drawing, and modeling.
