Sicon Limited is the holding company for the SISK Group of companies. The SISK Group which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year is a 5th generation family owned business which has its origins in Cork, Ireland.
The SISK Group is one of the largest
privately owned companies in
Ireland. In 2009, turnover exceeded
21 billion and it employed 2,000
people across all of its operations.
The Sisk name is best known for
its successful construction
businesses, which is not surprising
since the leading company in
the Irish construction market –
John Sisk & Son – is part of the
Group. In recent years, the Group
has diversified its interests to
include a growing number of other
businesses, and has grown its
geographical base, a strategy it will
continue to follow.

> SISK GROUP HISTORY
The SISK Group has its origin in the initiative of the 22 year
old John Sisk of Cork who founded his business in 1859.
The building firm he founded, remains at the core of the now
internationally and sectorally diversified group of companies
which form the SISK Group. John Sisk built up a substantial
regional construction business with an impressive record of
work around the province of Munster, building schools, hotels,
banks and an astonishing 30 churches. He was succeeded as
owner/manager by his son John V. Sisk and the partnership
they formed is still evident in the name of the building group
company, “John Sisk & Son”.
But it was the third John Sisk, grandson of the founder, who took the
small family business out of Munster to Dublin and beyond, even to Africa.
It was under his leadership from the 1950’s onwards, that what we now
recognise as the SISK Group was established. Branching out into civil
engineering, stone quarrying, electrical products distribution, and many
other diversifications, John G Sisk introduced a strategic and structured
approach by which the construction company became the largest in
Ireland. Truly he ventured where others merely speculated.
Over 150 years the SISK Group has survived many challenging crisis
periods and downturns, and has remained in family ownership, a
stabilising and supportive feature in difficult times. Yet this has not
inhibited growth and the recent development in the past 5 years of a
large healthcare division is an example of how the Group can make very
significant strategic moves.

Considerate Constructors:
John Sisk & Son are associate Members of the considerate
Constructors Scheme which is a national initiative set up
by the construction industry to improve the image of
construction in the UK. All Sisk UK sites register with the
scheme and are monitored against a Code of Practice by
external auditors, designed to encourage best practice
beyond statutory requirements.
John Sisk & Son Ltd won three awards at the prestigious
Considerate Constructors Scheme 2010 National Site Awards.
The awards are made to the highest scoring sites, selected
from over 7000 eligible, which were completed in 2009.
Benefits from the scheme include greater site efficiency,
site environmental initiatives, active engagement of local
community in the project and improved public perception of
how construction sites are run.
Sisk was awarded a Gold award for its Bolsover Street site and a further
two bronze awards were also awarded for Sisk’s Wembly W04 site and
Grosvenor House apartments.
Health and Safety:
Our belief that incidents and injuries are avoidable makes us
determined to manage the business with a Zero Incidents, Zero
Injuries intent. This is a shared commitment by our management,
staff and supply chain and we will do everything in our power to deliver
this promise.

With a wealth of experience in the hotels sector, whether in the premium
end, a boutique hotel or for hotel groups with multiple sites, John Sisk &
Son can bring relevant experience to bear on almost any project.
The standards of our build quality and the strength of our project
management skills are hallmarks of the Sisk name and have contributed
to our enviable position within this competitive sector.
Sisk’s experience of handling increasingly large and complex office
projects stems from proven delivery and innovative approaches to each
project’s unique set of challenges.
The range of buildings delivered for the commercial sector truly reflects
the diversity of our expertise and the breadth of our client’s needs.
Some schemes demand working in confined spaces and maintaining
access or operation to neighbouring sites, while others represent today’s
expectation that sustainability is a key part of the design and build
process, reflected in higher BREEAM ratings.

In the last 30 years John Sisk & Son has constructed 54 hospitals
with over 3,000 beds in both the public and private sectors. Flagship
projects include the extensions to the Mater Hospital and Blackrock
Clinic in Dublin, the Galway Clinic, Cork University Hospital, Limerick
Regional Hospital, Whitfield Clinic, Limerick Hospital and University
College Hospital, Galway (Phase 2). Much of our work involved both new
build and upgrade while maintaining a live hospital environment. As a
builder, John Sisk & Son understand the critical needs of the end user
patients and the integrated services required by Hospital Management
to deliver patient care in acute hospital environments.

With a legacy of having built over half of the 20th century power
plants in Ireland it was natural that Sisk would develop new markets
and alliances in this burgeoning sector. A global move to sustainable
power generation and a lower carbon energy economy has meant the
construction of larger and more highly efficient power plants. John
Sisk and Son is already a leader in this sector with the near completion
of the Pembroke 2100MW plant, the ESB’s Aghada power station and
the Whitegate plant for BGE. EU Landfill Directives are prompting the
construction of Energy from Waste facilities and John Sisk and Son
has seized the lead role in this sub-sector with the EfW plant at Duleek
and the award for the largest EfW to date at Runcorn for the Greater
Manchester Waste Management Scheme.
John Sisk and Son also confirmed a leading role in Renewables with
the construction of windfarms at Knockacummer, Ballycahill and the
Belfast quadgen plant. A major breakthrough was the winning of the
technical partnership contract with Coillte for the delivery of industrial
scale wood biomass boiler and CHP facilities.

Work in the UK within the industry sector spans extensive experience
in distribution facilities and process industry expertise. While in
Ireland, government policy attracted inward investment, supporting the
development of both the pharmaceutical and electronics sector reflected
in global client names such as Microsoft, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.
Combining the capabilities and expertise of the UK and Irish operations,
Sisk can offer clients a breadth of experience that instills confidence and
accounts for the remarkably high levels of repeat and referral business
we enjoy. It’s no surprise that so many leading names entrust their
industrial projects to John Sisk & Son Ltd.JOHNSON & JOHNSON
