Handling is becoming an increasingly important issue for feed additive processors, whose customers prefer products that can be dispensed with precision and certainty in automated processes. The most suitable options here are freely fl owing powders or microgranular products that do not cake or form dust. Achieving these characteristics means having to convert liquid substances or pastes into free-fl owing powders. It also means maintaining fl owability for powdered substances and preventing them from caking. Evonik has developed special SIPERNAT® grades for both applications.

The advantages for you and your customers:

■ Dust-free concentrates ■ Freely fl owing powders ■ Protection against clumping ■ Can be dispensed with precision ■ Consistent quality ■ Saves money

WHAT CAN SIPERNAT®SPECIALTY SILICA DO FOR YOU?

Many of the additives used in animal feeds, such as vitamins, organic acids, choline chloride solution, pigment disper-sions, and antioxidants, are liquids and have to be blended into a powdered or granulated feed premix in subsequent processing steps. As an absorbates manufacturer, you deposit these liquids onto carriers so that the valuable additives can be dispersed homogeneously. Your customers want a free-fl owing powder or granulate that they can blend with other dry substances in any given proportion.

SIPERNAT® specialty silica has long proven to be an out-standing carrier in these types of applications. A highly absorbent, freely fl owing, chemically inert, physiologically harmless material, SIPERNAT® specialty silica yields a fi ni-shed absorbate consisting of 50 – 70 % active agent, whose particle shape and handling properties are determined by the carrier silica. Evonik has developed its SIPERNAT® 2200 grade silica specifi cally for producing dust-free absorbates.

SIPERNAT® specialty silica helps you as an absorbates manufacturer to convert liquid or paste feed additives into free-flowing powders

As a premix manufacturer, you want to provide your customers with a freely fl owing powder or granulate that does not tend to form lumps – even when in storage. Mineral premixes, vitamin premixes, and other powdered feed additives, however, do not fl ow well enough on their own. The addition of 0.5 – 2 % of a hydrophilic or 0.1 – 0.5 % of a hydrophobic SIPERNAT® product signifi -cantly improves fl owability and reduces the tendency to cake. This allows users to dispense these valuable feed additives evenly, makes processing easier, and prevents costly downtime.

Figure 4 shows the eff ect of hydrophilic SIPERNAT® 22 S with copper sulfate, which is o en used in mineral premixes.

As a premix manufacturer, SIPERNAT® specialty silica keeps your premixes free-flowing and protects them from caking

Diagram 1 shows how the tendency of lysine to cake can be improved by adding small amounts of various silica grades. SIPERNAT® D 17 is particularly effi cient, as the hydrophobic nature of the silica inhibits further water uptake. Even concentrations of just 0.05 – 0.25 % are enough to make a signifi cant diff erence, considerably improving the long-term stability of amino acids, espe-cially during shipment or storage. The use of hydrophilic

SIPERNAT® 22 S and SIPERNAT® 50 S, or of AEROSIL® 200 F, a fumed silica, yield excellent results as well, although this requires somewhat higher concentrations of additive (0.1 – 1.0 %).

Along with reducing the tendency to cake, addition of SIPERNAT® specialty silica and AEROSIL® fumed silica also improves fl owability, as is the case for threonine (shown in diagram 2).

Packaging and handlingStandard packaging for SIPERNAT® products is a multilayer paper bag, with each bag containing between 10 and 25 kg, depending on the product and application. Certain silica prod-ucts are also available in semi-bulk packaging known as FIBCs (fl exible intermediate bulk containers). FIBCs can be emptied without creating dust, require fewer labor utilization (compared to paper bags), and eliminate potential contamination risks because they are closed. Synthetic silicas can still be shipped as loose bulk materials as a cost-eff ective alternative.

Additional information on packaging types is available from Technical Information sheets 1232 (“Packaging Types for Performance Silica”) or 1321 (“Semi-Bulk Packaging for Finely Dispersed SIPERNAT® Products”). Customers can easily handle these products without creating dust, and process (i. e., convey, measure out, blend, etc.) them within solid or liquid systems. More detailed information on handling synthetic silicas is avail-able in our Technical Bulletin Issue 28 (“Handling Synthetic Silicas and Silcates”).

Regulatory approval for animal feed

SIPERNAT® synthetic amorphous silicas meet quality requirements for E 551a fl ow aids (“Silicas, precipitated and dried”).

E 551a is listed in the “European Union Register of Feed Additives pursuant to Regulation (EC) No. 1831/2003.” All of the products identifi ed in this brochure are in com-pliance with the HACCP and FAMI-QS manufacturing principles described in EC Regulation No. 183/2005.

Furthermore, these products are also in compliance with the conditions stipulated under 21 CFR (US Code of Federal Regulations) Section 573.940.

We are happy to provide Kosher and Halal certifi cates upon request.

StorageSIPERNAT® products are largely chemically inert and their composition does not change, even over long peri-odes of time. However the relative large surface area of these products can lead them to adsorb volatile sub-stances. In the case of moisture, this adsorption process is reversible. For this reason we recommend storing all SIPERNAT® products in a dry location where they are protected from moisture or other organic vapors. For more detailed information on the stability of synthetic

silicas, please request the corresponding product infor-mation. SIPERNAT® products stored over long periods of time may exhibit signs of modest compression. This can elevate their tamped density slightly and result in changes to product characteristics.

For more detailed information on product packaging/handling, please contact your local sales organization.
