Body elongate, fusìform, anterìorlyrobust with large head; size not exeed-ing 2.5 m; mouth large, maxilla extendingto vertical below anterior third of eye;lower jaw broad and deep; teeth in jawslarge, slightly curved, but nearly conicalin shape; vil]iform teeth present ontongue and palatines; vomer edentulous;eyes large; body appearing naked exceptfor greatly reduced corselet and lateralline; scales in corselet elongate andconcealed under skin which is usually drawninto longitudinal furrows on either sideof dorsals; lateral line conspicuous andundulating posteriorly; two dorsal finsmore or less contiguous being separated bydistance hardly half diameter of eye;first dorsal with 12 l'4 spines of whichthird spine longest; dorsal finlets 6 or7 and anal fïnlets mostly 6; pectoral notexceeding head length; interpelvic processdeveloped, simple or bifid posteriorly;caudal relatively slender,with a welldeveloped median keel and a pair of low3.ateral keel on either side; caudal lobes

The genus Gymnosarda is recognised hereas being monotypic, although till veryrecently it was considered or treated as acomposite genus embracing also the littletunny (Euthynnus spp.) and the skipjack(Katsuwonus pelamis Linnaeus). Fraser-Brunner (1950) pLaced Cybiosarda Whitely(1935) (Type = C. elegans 1hitely) in thesynonymy of Gymifosarda. The affinities ofCybiosarda are more towards Sarda Cuvierthan to Gymnosarda, as it differs from thelatter in the vomer having villiform teeth;larger number of dorsal and anal fìnlets(9 or 10 I 7 or 8 respectively), coloura-tion, etc, Some authors have confused thegenus Ore no.sis Gill (1862) (type: Scomberunicolor eo roy St, Hilaire, 1809) tromthe eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean withthe genus Gymnosarda Gill, but the formercharacterized by the compressed body;possession of teeth on vomer; spinous dor'-sai fin with a convex margin, etc., isdistinct from G mnosarda which has notbeen recorded rom the Atlantic orMediterranean, GUnther (l86 proposedPelamys nuda to replaçe Gymnosarda unicoloras he coTered. the latter as well asScomber unicolor GeoffroX St, Hilaire underthe genus Pelamys, but this course will notbe necessary at present as RUppe1is andGeoffroy's species belong to differentgenera,

- Varieties

there can be hardly any doubt that asingle species occurs in the Indo-Pacific.The data is meagre to comment on the pos-sibilities of varieties occurring in dif-ferent areas As already mentioned above,the pectoral and anal finlet counts forthe Eastern Australian specimens appear tobe on the lower side, but this should bechecked with good series of specimensSurprisingly there is remarkable consis-tency in the gill raker counts throughoutthe range of the species

The morphometric data given by Dungand Royce (1953) indidate that certaincharacters such as diameter of iris showrelative decrease in size and increase intotal length, while a character such as"length of head" shows hardly any dif-ference in the ratios with growth

Fraser-Brunner (1950) laid considerablestress on the interpelvic process as adiagnostic character for even distinguish-ing genera of Thunnidae. In the case ofGymnosarda, the inter'pelvic process issaid to be as in Sarda and Orcynopsis,but in specimens from the Andamans exa-mined by Jones and Silas (1960) it is notso, being in the f rm of a single medianblade developed to a much lesser degreethan seen in Auxis (Figure 2b) and wouldnot appear to be a good diagnosticcharacter in this case

the agglutinin titer of the sera of seve-ra,1 species of fishes including Gymnosardaunicolor (Table III).

Suzuki (1961 b) mentions that anti-human B agglutinin was also found in thesera of Gymnosarda unicolor.

Through the application of Ouchterlomymethod of diffusion precipitation analysis,with rabbit immune sera, the presence ofspecies specific differences in serumantigens of certain adult tuna were demon-stratedby Ridgeway(196l). The resultsobtained by the most discriminating seraamong those prepared is shown in Table IV,

"For example, when testing our mostdiscriminatinganti-albacore serum, we findthat there are seven distinguishable preci-pitation lines with albacore serUm, fourof which cross react with yellowfin serum,five with bigeye serum, four with skipjackserum, three with Euthynnus serum and twowith dogtoothserum. Thus, with thisserum, the number of lines (antigens) whichdistinguish albacore from the other speciesare as follows: three with yellowfin, twowith bigeye, three with skipjack, fourwith Euthynnus and five with dogtooth."(Ridgeway, 1961). Considerable variabi-lity between discriminatory ability ofvarious tuna antisera were found indica-ting that anti-dogtooth, anti-albacore andanti-bigeye antisera possess considerablediscriminatory power, while the discrimi-natory qualities of even the best anti-yellowfin, anti-skipjack and anti-Euthynrius antisera are not very great,

2 DISTRIBUTION

2.1 DelimitatiOn of total area ofdistribution and eço1oica1characterization of this area

The occurrence of Gymnosarda unicolorhas been reported from the foLlowing areas:

Red Sea: Djedda

Indian Ocean: Off Mafia Islandsouth of Zanzibar, Minicoy, Lac-cadive, Maldive Islands; BassesReef south east of Ceylon; offPort Blair, Andamans; St Davis,Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar,ComoreS, Banes Castor and Leven,Rodriguez, Seychelles, AidrabraIslands; Hawkins, South Amirante,S-t. Brandon and Constant banks

According to this information the geo-graphical distribution of the species ran-ges fromlongitude Q°E to about lSS°E andfrom latitude 30°N to about 35°S, this areacovering parts of the tropic and sub-tropicsections of the Indian and Pacific oceans(Figure 5).

There are hardly any reports of Gymno-sar unicolor having been caught in thehigh seas. Invariably they are caught nearreefs adjacent to islands or the mainlandand as can be seen from Figure 5, most of

the records are from the vicinity ofareas where live coral reefs are knownto occur.
