October / November 2018 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to fall with the change of colors in nature and our fabric

palettes. Apple, cinnamon, cider, and pumpkin find their way to our

diets, scents and quilting projects.

Many good things happened at our August sew-in: neonatal and

comfort quilts construction, socializing and networking. A huge thank

you to all our members who used their creativity for the benefit of

others.

At the September meeting, Vicki Tallacksen and Amy Ottens shared

their quilting journey stories and samples of their work. Those in

attendance seemed to enjoy their presentations. What a great way to

get to know our fellow members and to see how their skills progressed.

Barbie St. Aubin’s husband has taken a job in Oklahoma. They are

getting the house here ready for sale. She certainly has been our

energizer bunny with membership. We wish her well. Our Guild’s loss

is another guild’s gain.

Everyone will be getting tickets to sell for our raffle quilt, “Sangria.”

Please make a sincere effort to sell all your tickets to help our Guild.

Be sure to ask for additional tickets when you run out of tickets.

November will find some of us on a Guild sponsored retreat at

Covenant Harbor at Lake Geneva. We have so much fun, learn loads,

share ideas, advise on projects, shop and bond. What a fantastic place

to nurture friendships and make new ones.

We are still in need of chair(s) for the evening Christmas party. This is

a relatively easy event to oversee.

Happy quilting! Marie Stenger

Quilt Show 2019 - “Out Of This World”!

Our Quilt Show – “Out of the World” – is coming up in less than 8

months, May 4 & 5, 2019! With every guild member pitching in, it will be a

wonderful show, as always! This is our major fundraiser for the programs,

speakers, and charity work for two years. Many hands make light work, and

we are asking all guild members to support the quilt show by:

1. Entering quilt(s) for judging and/or display (registration forms on website)

2. Donating fabric, books, etc. to sell in Boutique (beginning in January)

3. Making one or more small items to sell in Boutique

4. Making one or more items for Silent Auction

5. Volunteering before, during, and after the show (sign-ups coming later on)

6. Selling raffle tickets for our beautiful raffle quilt “Sangria”.

7. Inviting family and friends to attend the show.

Thank you so much – I truly

appreciate it.!

Treasurer: Checking account and money market account balances were given to the membership. Publications: September 15 is the deadline for the October/November newsletter. Membership: Barbie St. Aubin announced she would be moving to Oklahoma soon and has to resign her position as membership chair. She introduced Shelley Watson and Janis Albeck who will be taking over. There were 61 in attendance with one visitor in the afternoon, and 27 members and 1 guest in the evening.. Dues are $30 and need to be turned to membership. Birthday drawing was won by Sue Lacerra, name tag drawing won by Beth Faust. Programs: Marge Sment said our October program will be Cassie Schlais from Lucky Quilts in Pecatonica. In November we will have Pat Speth of Nickel Quilts, who specializes in nickel squares and will conduct a workshop. Sign up for her wonderful workshop today. Special projects: Norma Copes said there were 15 baby quilts turned in in August. She took seven quilts to Mercy and seven quilts to Swedes. She plans to take seven quilts to each hospital each month if they are available. Mini morning workshop: Jan Person said next month they will be making a sewing portfolio from “All People Who Quilt”. Check the website for materials. Spam: The next meeting at the Cherry Valley library will be 10am – 4pm September 22. It will be an open sewing session. Cecelia and Elizabeth can help with any projects, questions, or problems. 2019 Quilt Show: Phyllis Campbell gave an update on the quilt show. There are only eight months remaining until the show, meetings will resume on September 17. Rack cards have been printed and are ready. People are needed to sell ads and someone is needed to chair bed-turning. Everyone needs to be making quilts for the show and Phyllis encouraged us to have our quilts judged. She also encouraged people to start making things for the silent auction, and the boutique. 72 squares for the 6 X 42 inch challenge quilts have been given out. Norma Copes volunteered to chair bed-turning. Those in charge of the medallions for the show will have kits ready in October to be passed out. Raffle quilt: The quilt is currently on display at the Madison Expo. Comfort quilts: Vicky Tallacksen said 12 ½ inch squares are needed. A group will be meeting September 17 and also October 1 from 1 to 4 PM at Quilter’s General store in their lower level to put these squares together. Old business: An update was given on the Quilt School which will be held this October. Teachers and helpers may sign up with Amy Otten’s. In May we passed a motion to form a committee to look for grants and sources to help finance our project needs, especially batting. Donna Langford has experience in grant writing. The language must be precise. If you have ideas for sources and would like to work on this committee let Anne Biedowicz or Marie Stenger know. If you are good at pricing out materials we could also use your help. Someone suggested “Go Fund Me” on the Internet, however, that would have to be checked into as we are a non-profit organization. Registration forms are available for the November 8–11 Quilting Retreat at Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva. Questions should be directed to Monica Kelso or Marie Tovo. Everyone and Their Brother by Karla Clark has been chosen for the book review at the retreat. New business: Volunteers are needed to plan activities and organize the Christmas party. The North Star mini group volunteered to do that. Mary Ann Hicks has lots of magazines to give away, please see Anne for her phone number if you want them. Quilt tops are needed for the Rescue Mission. Show and tell: 12 people participated in show and tell.

"It's All About the Color" Challenge

Have you signed up for the latest guild challenge opportunity? "It's All About the Color" will

hang at the guild quilt show in May 2019. The guidelines are simple:

1. Obtain an envelope from either Karen Grover or Robin Gausebeck. Inside you will find a small swatch of beautifully-colored fabric.

2. Create a quilt using this color as the MAIN color for you quilt. In other words, find fab- rics that are the same color (or tints or shades) as your swatch and make that color the star. You may use other colored fabrics but the overall impression should be of the color on your swatch.

3. The quilt should measure 6" wide by 42" long and can be made using ANY PATTERN, ANY TECHNIQUE, ANY DESIGN.

4. Please attach a 4" sleeve at the top of your quilt.

5. Attach your fabric swatch to the label on the back of your quilt. This will make it easier for the quilts to be hung in the proper order at the show.

6. Turn the quilts in to Karen or Robin at the December or January guild meetings.

You will have an opportunity to sign up at the July guild meeting, but if you want to get an earlier start, contact Robin or Karen and they can arrange to get your swatch to you.
