4.5 EQUIPMENT MATCHING

To insure the safe and reliable operation of theapplicator, it is necessary to use a tractor withappropriate specifications. As a guideline, insurethat these requirements are met:

1. Tractor Horsepower:Refer to Table 1 for the minimum recom-mended horsepower for your machine.Although the recommended tractor horse-power is not required to pull the machine, itdoes provide the required strength in thedrawbar as the hitch is very heavy. This willalso insure that the unit has the requiredstability and control in hilly terrain and duringtransport.

2. Front End Weights:By following the recommendations fortractor power, the tractor will havesufficient weight to provide stability forthe unit during field operation or whentransporting. It is also recommendedthat each tractor be equipped with afull compliment of suitcase weights onthe front of the tractor. This willprovide the required weight on thefront for turning and extra traction ifequipped with front wheel assist.

3. Hydraulic System:The tractor hydraulic system must becapable of 8 gpm (24 lpm) at 2000 psi(13,800 kPa) to operate lift cylindersand the drive motor. Either closed-center or open-centered systems canbe used. However an open centeredhydraulic system is limited to 8 gpmmaximum.

c. With the automatic controllersystem, the pump will be con-trolled to provide the selectedapplication rate at any groundspeed within 20% of nominal. Asensor mounted on the axle orother source provides a signal tothe controller to determineground speed. This speed isused to vary the application rateas appropriate.

However the best results areobtained when the groundspeed is run between 5 and 8mph. Ground speed variationsin the field will automatically becompensated for by the wheeldrive and automatic systems.Always operate at a comfortablespeeds. Do not operate so fastthat the tool bar or tank bouncewhile going through the field.Effective results require that theliquid be applied at a consistentdepth in a consistent manner.Machine bouncing will preventthis required consistency.
