DESCRIPTION

They call it Grand Prix Season Singapore, and that’s a pretty apt way to describe an event that’s a whole lot more than simply the 14th round of the 2014 Formula One World Drivers’ Championship. The race itself is certainly unique on the F1 calendar. It is the world’s only night-race street circuit F1 grand prix, and the only F1 street race in Asia. As street circuits go, the Singapore venue is among the best in the world – the Monaco of Asia, as some have described it. With its city setting, harbour-side vista, and the backdrop of the incredible Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, it is a magnifi cent place to watch Formula One racing cars in action. Of course, what makes it even more dramatic is the fact that it’s happening after the sun has gone down. Motor racing at night in all its forms is a spectacular viewing experience, but F1 after dark and under lights is something on a whole new level.

They call it Grand Prix Season

Singapore, and that’s a pretty apt way

to describe an event that’s a whole lot

more than simply the 14th round of

the 2014 Formula One World Drivers’

Championship.

The race itself is certainly unique on

the F1 calendar. It is the world’s only

night-race street circuit F1 grand prix,

and the only F1 street race in Asia.

As street circuits go, the Singapore

venue is among the best in the world

– the Monaco of Asia, as some have

described it. With its city setting,

harbour-side vista, and the backdrop

of the incredible Marina Bay Sands

integrated resort, it is a magnifi cent

place to watch Formula One racing

cars in action.

Of course, what makes it even more

dramatic is the fact that it’s happening

after the sun has gone down. Motor

racing at night in all its forms is a

spectacular viewing experience, but

F1 after dark and under lights is

something on a whole new level.

As far as the racing and the

championship is concerned, by the

time the F1 circus arrives in Singapore

it’s getting into the business end of the

season. If the current form continues,

in the Constructors’ Championship

there will be clear daylight between

points leader Mercedes-Benz and the

rest of the fi eld. After such a dominant

season for the Silver Arrows, even after

Page 4: Singapore Grand Prix Insiders Guide 2014

4 F1 Racing

only nine rounds it’s hard to see any

other team posing any kind of threat.

The Constructors’ crown might be

a foregone conclusion but the Drivers’

title is an entirely different matter.

The Merc team’s superiority has

meant that Lewis Hamilton and Nico

Rosberg have taken the lion’s share of

the winnings, and the championship

has become an intense battle between

the two Mercedes drivers.

If it remains that way, we’re set

for an incredible stoush between

the Mercedes two team-mates

in Singapore, with the world

championship on the line and only

five races to follow. Will the two title

combatants sort one another out in a

fair fight, or will the two team-mates

come to blows?

It’s a compelling scenario, but far

from the only reason to be a part of

Grand Prix Season Singapore. For

Australian sports fans, the only night

street circuit race is also the closest

international grand prix to our

shores – Sydney to Singapore these

days is a relatively short flight.

But never mind just the race

itself, because this is more than

just a sporting event experience.

Grand Prix Season Singapore runs

from September 12 until the race

on September 21, and it offers

something for everyone: a festival of

Singapore’s art, culture, shopping,

dining and night life activities, not

to mention some of the world’s

top entertainers live on stage at

the various concerts venues in the

vicinity of the circuit.

This booklet is your guide to some

– but far from all – of the attractions

and activities on offer during Grand

Prix Season Singapore.

14 F1 Racing

A century of motor racing in SingaporeThe Formula 1 Singapore Grand

Prix has only been held since 2008

but the night F1 race is just the latest

chapter in the long history of motor

racing in Singapore. For 13 years

from 1961, the Lion City was also the

focus of international attention when

it staged a very different genre of the

Singapore Grand Prix – an event that

hosted both car and motorcycle races.

By the late

1960s and

early ‘70s the Singapore Grand Prix

had grown into arguably Asia’s most

prestigious motor racing grand prix,

and the lure of winning it attracted

drivers from all over the Asian region,

including some of the top stars from

Australia and New Zealand. Indeed,

while Sebastian Vettel has won the F1

Singapore Grand Prix more times than

any other driver, his three wins are

matched by New Zealander Graeme

Lawrence, who scored a hat trick from

1414

1960s and

Page 15: Singapore Grand Prix Insiders Guide 2014

Singapore Insiders Guide 15

1969 through to ’71. Also in that era,

the race was won by Australians

Vern Schuppan, Max Stewart and

Garrie Cooper.

But to tell the whole story of

motor racing in Singapore, we have

to travel almost a century back in

1907, when the first racing meet in

Malaya was held near the Botanic

Gardens in Tyersall, under the

auspices of the nascent Singapore

Automobile Club. The story is as

exhilarating as Formula 1’s only

true night race, and you can see it

all at the National Museum of

Singapore, 93 Stamford Road in

the Bras Basah precinct.

BARS & CLUBS

It is a secret that is only now being

discovered by the rest of the world,

but in recent years Singapore has

developed a world-class nightlife scene

with a diverse set of options to cater to

every whim and fancy.

The bigger dance clubs, such as

Zouk and Pangaea, cater for the

partygoers, but there is a growing

array of microbreweries, rooftop and

specialist cocktail bars spread across

Singapore.

Cool down, Even when it’s not Grand Prix

weekend, the fun doesn’t

stop once the sun goes down

in Singapore. This city offers

an exciting array of nightlife

options: be it clubbing, drinking,

that tasty late-night supper or

any number of other activities.

Here is your indispensable

guide of things to do off-track,

and after dark in Singapore:

these are some of the best

places to visit, but there are

plenty more besides.

Zouk has been a pioneer of the local

dance music scene since the early ’90s

– it made DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs

Poll in 2012. It is still one of the best

dance clubs in town, continuing to

push the envelope of contemporary

dance music with weekly international

DJ offerings in genres such as house,

trance, techno, hip hop and soul.
