“Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the action stems thedream again; and this interdependence produces the highestform of living.” Anaïs Nin (1903 – 1977)

In July 2011, Professor Dr. Rachel Lev-Wiesel from HaifaUniversity (Israel) planted the first seeds of her dream of expandingthe roots of creative arts therapy to Asia. After a year of thoroughresearch and diligent preparation, together with another dreamer,Professor Dr. Bussakorn Binson, from Chulalongkorn University, their common aspiration became a reality in June 2012, when theAsean Music and Creative Arts Therapy Summit in Bangkokreceived broad participation from international participants.

It was also a dream for a newly graduated art therapist likemyself, to have the opportunity to attend such a meaningful event, where world-wide experienced clinicians, educators, researchers andcreative arts therapists were gathered to share their passion andknowledge on the clinical application of creative arts. Of course, I

was also thrilled to be reunited with my far-away friends whom Ihave missed so much since the last international summit in Israel.

“Using music [and arts] as atool of communication, themessage we are trying to getacross, will not just be betterunderstood, but moreimportantly, better felt.” Dr. Udom Pejarasangharn(2012)

During the first few days of the summit, Dr. UdomPejarasangharn along with various presenters set the stage byemphasizing that ‘the world needs empathy’! He recognizes thatempathy may not be the immediate solution to all the manmadeand natural problems our world is facing today, but confident it isa pathway to love that eventually leads to sustainable world peace.

Dr. Udom explained that empathy is important, because ithelps us to understand and communicate effectively with ourfellow human beings. It is not only about perceiving what othersare feeling (cognitive empathy), but also sensing what others areexperiencing emotionally (affective empathy). It is also aboutcultural sensitivity and conflict resolution. Therefore, if we findways to increase our ability to empathize with one another, we willbe one big step closer to the dream of unity.

“The best part of life is notjust surviving, but thrivingwith passion and compassionand humor and style andgenerosity and kindness.”Maya Angelou (Born 1928)

Creative art forms, especially music, have longbeen recognized as a universallanguage and an agent forhealing and relaxation. Moreover, recent research findings havealready proven that music and possibly creative arts affect mirrorneurons in our brain and bring us to the state of empathy. This is

why the medical field has started to pay attention to the use ofcreativity in addition to medicine and surgical means, to provideindividuals with both physical and mental healthcare (holistic)treatments.

For instance, after years of devotion in treating cancer patients,Dr. Patravoot Vatanasapt (Bangkok) shared his belief that whenmedical solutions reaches their limitations to cure physical illness orpermanent impairments, the power of music expands its potentialto improve the quality of living during the critical survival stages.

Meanwhile, well-known musician and professor from France,Dr. Tran Quang Hai (Vietnam) believes that music is all around andwithin us. He has dedicated himself to teaching how to useovertones, chakra, and sound vibrations within one’s body as aform of music therapy. Indeed, through practicing this technique, many patients who had suffered from throat cancer were able tofind their ‘voices’ again.

Besides cancer patients, Dr. Pakdee Sudenukarn and his teamfrom Dansi Crown Prince Hospital have been implementing aninnovative “1 to 5 Piano” technique tailored for individuals whoexperience difficulties in learning. By simplifying the conventionalmusic score to a fingers-brain-numbers mapping method, it effectivelyincreases one’s interest, confidence and eventually ability to succeed.

“[Love] comes to us in theaterin the way we communicatewith each other, whether it bea symphony orchestra, or awonderful ballet, or abeautiful painting, or a play. It's a way of expressing ourhumanity.”Julie Harris (Born 1925)

Over the following days of the summit, presenters fromBangkok, Israel, India, and Germany continued to introduce us toother modalities of creative arts, including drama, dance, movement and visual arts. It is always an eye-opening and life-enriching experience to participate in one of these creativetherapeutic workshops. Since creativity is very fluid in nature, therefore its improvisational potential to influence differentindividuals’ body, mind and soul is endless.

I personally feel that the soothing effect of music therapy calmsmy anxiety and softens my heart; while the mirroring technique indrama and movement group therapy simulates life scenarios and

interpersonal relationships, which deepens my reflectionon self and others. And therejuvenating power of visualart therapy never fails to bringout my playful inner child!

The most impactfulmoment in fact was during thelast session where all theparticipants were engaged in amusical jamming sessiontogether in the lecture hall. Some of us made music withany tools we had in our hands- some of us sang while someof us danced. And just as Dr.Bussakorn Binson hadmentioned at the beginning ofthe summit, it was indeed asafe and creative place wherewe could leave our externalpersona, profession and statusat home, and fully enjoyed and shared our authentic selves withone another. It was like witnessing a breathtaking performance ofan orchestra of humanity.

The 6-day summit ended with these joyful sounds echoing inour memories. What follows is the beginning of new ideas, directions, collaboration, responsibilities and challenges in passingon this dream to bring creative arts therapy to every corner of theworld. The word ‘world peace’ might at times seem naive andunattainable. However, after this summit, I brought home with methe inspiration, passion and collective belief from all theparticipants who had contributed in a variety of ways to changevulnerable lives. I am hopeful that one day, we will come to aglobal awareness of our common humanity, so that the dream ofunity will soon become our shared reality. As I said goodbye to allthe newly made friends, an old song came to my mind…

“Someday we will find therainbow connection, thelovers, the dreamers and me.” (Rainbow Connection by PaulWilliams & Kenneth Ascher,1979)

Well known as an art writer, academic, curatorand multidisciplinary artist, Susie Lingham wearsmany hats. This November, Susie presents Turn, asolo exhibiton that captures the different iterationsof her art practice. She shares the many aspectsof her art making process with Chelsea Chua.

CC: What can we expect from Turn? I understand that there willbe a performance element to the work?

SL: I’m hoping for words, images, and yes, a performance‘element’ that will figure on the opening night or the Saturdayafter opening night. This performance is in the process of being‘conversed’ into being at this time, and will continue to bewhittled into formation until the night of the performance. I haveinvited Sinclair Ang, a multidisciplinary artist and sultan of‘swing’ and the lindy hop, and Noor Effendy Ibrahim, artist-performer and Artistic Director of The Substation, to work withme on the performance. I will also be inviting a few othermusicians to work with me – featuring voice, wind and stringinstruments. The visual show itself will feature mixed mediadrawings and text.

CC: When was your last solo exhibition, and how do you thinkyour work has evolved since?

SL: I don’t believe I’ve had a ‘solo’ exhibition in the conventionalsense of the word. In 2004 I conceptualized, directed, scripted, and performed in If the Universe, Between Circle and Ellipse,Slips which was an interdisciplinary performance work held atthe same time as the visual show I curated Sounds Like Mirrors.(This was at the now non-existent PKW on Kerbau Road.) My DPhil at the University of Sussex, which was in Literature,Religion and Philosophy, was certainly an intensely ‘solo’endeavor for me…I completed that in 2008.

CC: What is the inspiration behind Turn?

SL: My work has always been inspired by ‘turnings’, and‘becomings’. The word ‘turn’ itself, with all its uncontainable

connotative scope, provokes thought. Everything conspires andthought itself turns curious corners…the process of thinking isongoing and always shapeshifting. Metaphor helps hold slipperyuncertainties just that little while longer. As a verb, noun oradjective, the word turn already ‘spins’, and as an idea, turn isexhilarating. Alchemical.

CC: You are well known as an art critic and writer. How does yourwriting affect your art practice and vice versa?

SL: I never think of writing as pure ‘writing’. I think I ‘wright’.Work flows from one medium to another, whatever form ‘takes’best, given the concept. Words are a beautifully fluid medium, likemolten mirrors, and ideas turn and return through language andimagery. My art practice is writing – art for me is a way of thinkingand working with ideas.

Turn is on at The Substation Gallery from 17 November to 1 December 2012.The opening reception is on 16 November, 7.30pm.

The Substation Gallery is open daily from 12noon – 9pm and closed on publicholidays. Admission is free. The Substation is located at 45 Armenian Street,Singapore 179936. For more information please visit www.substation.org or callthe box office on 6337 7800.

Throughher signature abstract line compositions and a calligraphic woodcutform, Esther Ng combines meanings of text and image. Alison Wilson andMarisa Keller’s works explore the interaction between humans andnature in highly textured, detailed and sometimes three-dimensional etchings and mixed media works.

Walking down the street, eyes glued to a scrolling Facebookfeed, ears plugged via iPod to the latest music sensation, advertising popping out of every surface. Sound familiar? Thedawn of the 21st century has us dealing with sensory overloadfrom every quarter. Minimalism, with its emphasis on strippingaway the unnecessary and focussing on the essential, might bejust what we need to take a step back and reflect.

Serial Instinct, curated by Tolla Sloane, comprises works fromMichael Lee’s new series of paintings, Dwelling, as well as recentworks on paper by Richard Caldicott, whose long and storiedcareer has seen decades devoted to the exploration of minimalform. The exhibition's title refers to the shared desire of the artiststo work in defined series, as well as the notion of seriality –repetition, in other words – within the broader field of Minimalism.

Minimalism, as an art movement, is associated with post–WW2 western, particularly American art. Prominent artistsassociated with this movement include Donald Judd, Dan Flavin,Sol Le Witt and Frank Stella. However, it is rooted in the reductiveaspects of Modernism and Japanese Zen tradition and culture.

Dwelling, consisting of a series of restrained, monochromefloor-plans of structures built, unbuilt, soon-to-be-demolished, oreven fictional, seems at first altogether clinical in character, adetached collection of architectural diagrams. The selection ofstructures, however, suggests the series’ evocative (or provocative)role in distilling urban memory, ranging from Anne Frank’s house,to 3 WTC (also known as the World Trade Centre), as well asHousing Development Board flats of varying vintages.

Rather than encouraging nostalgia, the contrast between theplain appearance of the floor-plans and the emotional or imaginativeweight of the structures depicted is designed to fire our imaginations, and encourage us to reflect on memory’s capacity for abstraction, and how our urban environment shapes the way we think about theworld. Memory, by necessity, abstracts – in particular, through theinvoluntary removal of extra details – which is suggested by theabstraction of a structure by way of its floor-plan.

Richard Caldicott’s drawings, which are far less re-presentational from the outset, owe a great deal to the traditions ofminimalism in music and architecture (which speak of theseemingly paradoxical meeting point of stillness and change).Caldicott’s exclusive use of serial production (collectively identifiedby categorisation, or series title), far from being changeless, isinstead a robust engine of difference, generating subtly infinitevariety within repeated grid structures.

Beyond simply owing a debt to Minimalist architecture,Caldicott's works may be viewed as objects in their own right. Theycan be experienced alongside the other objects which constituteour experience of the world, as opposed to pictures, which suggestrepresentation, rather than experience. In the century or so sincethe dawn of mass production, with our lives currently flooded withidentical manufactured goods of infinite variety, it is perhaps morepressing than ever to give full consideration to the possibilities ofthe minimal.

Mere weeks after the 99th anniversary of his birth, it may beuseful to consider Mark Rothko’s take on the subject of repetition:

“If a thing is worth doing once, it’s worth doingover and over again, exploring it, probing it…”

Singapore Dance Theatre presents

Sleeping Beauty

13 – 16 DecEsplanade Theatre

In celebration of the magical Christmas season, atime of love, hope and festivities, SingaporeDance Theatre will enchant audiences withSleeping Beauty, a ballet often considered as thepinnacle of classical repertoire.

Staged by artistic director Janek Schergen, featuringchoreography by Marius Petipa, Singapore Dance Theatre willbring this beloved fairy-tale to life at the Esplanade Theatre as agrand finale to the 2012 season, with stunning costumes, spectacular sets and principal dancers of incomparable technique. This is the second time SDT is performing Sleeping Beauty, following the company premiere of the piece in 2010.

A treat for all ages, audiences will be captivated by this timelesstale about a beautiful princess, a spell of 100 years sleep, acharming prince and a true love’s kiss which awakens the kingdom’sslumber. Sleeping Beauty is set to a rich score by Peter IlyichTchaikovsky, with stunning costumes designed by Tracy Grant Lord.

Sleeping Beauty was made famous by the legendaryproduction of The Royal Ballet in London. Their production linksdirectly back to the original performance of the ballet in 1890 atthe Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia. The original scorewas created by P. I. Tchaikovsky especially for the first performanceof the ballet. It remains one of the most well-known pieces ofclassical music in the world today. Sleeping Beauty is a perfectblend of music and dance, combined to become a visual spectacle.

Janek Schergen comments, “Sleeping Beauty is the turningpoint for technique for a company, and is often considered as thefinest achievement in classical ballet. It is one of the mostdemanding ballet productions with over 150 roles, involving moreclassical dancing than any other ballet. To produce SleepingBeauty is to declare that the company is mature.”

Indeed, staging Sleeping Beauty is exhilarating for SingaporeDance Theatre especially with the large cast essential for theproduction, the massive amount of costumes involved and dramaticset changes which reflect the transposition of time between acts.

Tickets are available through all SISTIC outlets and SDT office. For details go to www.singaporedancetheatre.com

Tribal ExpressionsSolo Exhibition of Photographs by Jaina Mishra

28 Nov – 01 DecThe Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane

Tribal Expressions is a series of photographs byJaina Mishra that are palimpsests of expressions oftribal identity and expressions of human emotion.

Tribes express their identity through signature elements oflifestyle that wow the world with their differentness. Their textile

arts, their body arts and their adornmentsare testimonies of their differentiatedidentity. But beneath these differences, allhumans are the same, living life throughthe same range of emotions and lifevalues. Tribal or urban, we all have similardesires and apprehensions and express ouremotions in similar ways.

This ‘differentness’ and ‘sameness’ hasbeen presented simultaneously in thisseries through forty portraits and lifescapesof tribes, gypsies, nomads and minorityethnic groups from Nagaland, ArunachalPradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh,Mewar, Kutch, Karnataka and Goa.

‘The art lies in the content of my photographs – in the peoplethemselves and in their creations. My photographs are merely amedium of transmission’ says Jaina about this series created overa period of three years.

Also presented as auxilliary installations are antique tribaltextiles created by tribals themselves.

Jaina’s fascination with tribal cultures began a decade agothrough tribal art and blossomed into a full-time engagement withvanishing cultures. She is a collector of antique tribal textiles, writes for textile collector forums and shares her extensive tribaltravel experiences on her blog. Three years ago, she taught herselfphotography in order to do justice to the transmission of the beautyof these tribes to audiences beyond their isolated geography. Inthis short span, her photographs have earned awards andselections in Singapore, New York and Arles. She also holds anMBA and is a member of MENSA.

Play becomes art in the latest exhibition toopen at ArtScience Museum – The Art of theBrick by artist Nathan Sawaya. Sawaya’s worldis limitless in this exhibition where he builds, creates and explores his imagination using thebeloved LEGO® brick as the sole art medium.Deemed as one of CNN's 12 “Must-seeExhibitions”, The Art of the Brick treats visitorsto stunning displays of intricate sculpturesmade from LEGO bricks. Hundreds ofthousands of pieces of LEGO bricks have beenused for the thought-provoking works, alongwith new sculptures created specifically for theexhibition run.

Sawaya encourages the art movement by using a medium thatvisitors can recognize and relate to. He explains “I use LEGO bricksas my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions toartwork created from something with which they are familiar.Everyone can relate to it since it is a toy that many children haveat home. I want to elevate this simple toy to a place it has neverbeen before. ArtScience Museum’s distinctive architecturalstructure and creative mission are inspirational and it’s the ideallocation to display works that are fundamentally re-imaginationsof the world.”

Sawaya’s most iconic piece to date is the sculpture Yellow –depicting a man tearing his chest apart with LEGO bricks spillingout. This sculpture, like most of Sawaya’s works, is open tointerpretation. To him, Yellow is about the idea that “you’reexposing yourself to the world, you’re exposing yourself to all sortsof things.”

One of the pieces on display is an approximately 6-meter longdinosaur skeleton. When asked why he chose to build such asculpture, Sawya replied “This is one of the largest sculptures I

have ever made. It took an entire summer to build and nearlydrove me crazy trying to make it work. After seeing so many kidsflock to my first solo exhibition, I wanted to give back somethingand create a sculpture that children would enjoy. What could bebetter than a dinosaur?”

In another first for ArtScience Museum, Sawaya has beencommissioned to build an impressive LEGO sculpture of the iconicmuseum. The ArtScience Museum LEGO sculpture will be unveiledduring the opening of The Art of the Brick.

Sawaya has exhibited at numerous distinguished galleries andmuseums worldwide, which include the MASS MoCA inMassachusetts, Time Warner Center in New York, the Art andCulture Center in Hollywood, the Spot Gallery in Paris andFederation Square in Melbourne.

Also showing at ArtScience Museum is Outside In: A MagnumPhotos Showcase (through 6 January 2013). The Museum is alsoone of the five venues to feature 178 works from SIPF’s Open Call(through 25 November 2012)

Outside In is a rare showcase that brings together 143 worksby three lauded photographers – Stuart Franklin, Mark Power andJacob Aue Sobol – from the prestigious photography agency,Magnum Photos.

Stuart Franklin – known for his photograph of a studentchallenging army tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989 –documents Europe’s alteringlandscape and impact ofenvironmental changes in"Footprint: Our Landscape in Flux".

Mark Power's "Sound of TwoSongs" is an intimate account of aforeigner’s impression of Poland, documenting the poetic side of thecountry’s fascinating transition andstate.

In "I, Tokyo", Jacob Aue Sobolcaptures his mood and experiencesin Tokyo, where he feltoverwhelming isolation andloneliness amidst the lack of eyecontact in the busy streets andsilence amongst big crowds.

A young, home grown, biennial photographyfestival has drawn the attention of theinternational photography community. With justtwo instalments in its short history, the SingaporeInternational Photography Festival (SIPF) hasattracted the participation of the photographyworld’s biggest names in its third instalmentwhich started 5 October.

The 3rd SIPF sees the involvement of Magnum Photos, theworld’s most prestigious photo agency co-founded by HenriCartier-Bresson; renowned contemporary Chinese artist WangQingsong; and Italian photographer and artistic director of theRapallo Contemporary Photography Show Andrea Botto.

As well as these prominent guests, the Festival’s coreexhibition features 414 images by 50 photographers from 25countries around the world. They were selected from close to9,000 images submitted in response to SIPF’s Open Call held fromNov 2011 to Apr 2012, and are displayed at the AllianceFrancaise, the National Library Building, theSingapore Management University Gallery, TheSubstation, ArtScience Museum® at Marina BaySands and The Photographic Society of Singapore atSelegie Arts Centre.

“This is a very exciting moment for thecommunity of photographers in Singapore,” says MsGwen Lee, Director of the SIPF. “We are thrilled thatso many photographers from around the worldresponded to our open call and that we have some ofthe world’s best photographers taking part in thisyear’s festival. I believe this is a sign thatphotographers the world over are starting to see SIPFas a key event they must take part in.”

As part of the Festival’s objective to nurtureemerging photographic talents, the SIPF, in

partnership with Magnum Photos, has launched the inauguralMagnum Mentorship Singapore. This is the first such programmein Asia for Magnum Photos and is supported by Leica Camera AsiaPacific and the National Arts Council.

Another first is the showcase of a monumental 42-metre-longwork by renowned Chinese contemporary artist and photographerWang Qingsong, aptly titled The History of Monuments.

At the heart of the SIPF is a firm belief that everyone can enjoyphotography. “The SIPF is more than just a showcase ofphotographic art,” says Ms Lee. “We are about nurturing anaudience and adding value to society through public educationand engagement.”

This year, to promote public appreciation of the art, a shippingcontainer has been transformed into a House of Photography(HOP) – a fully operational mobile darkroom and education centrethat allows the public to learn about photography and developactual photographic prints. It is located at the National LibraryBuilding during the SIPF and will travel to various CommunityClubs, schools and libraries after the Festival. In addition, acomprehensive learning programme and booklet has been createdfor educators to guide their secondary and tertiary studentsthrough various Festival components.

M.O.L.C. A solo show by London-based, Malaysian artist Rajinder Singh. TheM.O.L.C. series was inspired by the artist's reflections and observations of his homecountry from the vantage point of one living abroad, and the way in which

Malaysia had been depicted in the media by foreign press over the years. With thisunderlying theme, the artist explored a 'make believe' world, dreaming up a time when'Malaya' may have been promoted as a land of living curiosities – foreign, exotic, strangeand exciting! – a melting pot of rich and bizarre cultures. Serial Instinct features a new series of paintings, Dwelling, by the critically-acclaimed Michael Lee, as well as recent works on paper by Royal College of ArtResearch Fellow, Richard Caldicott. Dwelling depicts the floorplans of structures:

structures only dreamed of, structures with uncertain futures, and structures destroyed ordemolished. In reducing them to pure linework, from a fixed aerial perspective, at asingle scale of 1:50, Lee evokes the roles of reduction, bias, and imagination in theprocess of memory. In a series produced from 2011-12, Caldicott’s work is strikinglyrestrained, and reflects his long-running interest in Modernist architecture and Minimalistmusic. As part of an over-arching, decades-long exploration of line, colour, and form,Caldicott presents a sensory experience that is simultaneously austere and seductive. 01 – 30 Nov
