DANCING

Let them praise His name in the dance. Psalm 149:3

Praise Him with timbrel and dance. Psalm 150:4 Thou has turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou hast put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness. Psalm 30:11 The word “dance” is interpreted from the Hebrew and means “to spring about, rock back and forth,

make merry.” If you are not a dancer, you can at least rock back and forth with merriment! And by

all means, don’t despise the dancers as David’s

wife Michal did. She excluded herself from the blessing of the Lord by doing so! (Read the story

in II Samuel 6)

BANNERS

We will shout for joy when you are victorious, and will lift up our banners in the name of the Lord." Psalm 20:5 Banners of themselves have no power, yet when used as in instruments of worship, they can be an

intimidating force against the enemy.

Isaiah 31:9 says, Their stronghold will fall because of terror; at the sight of the battle standard, their commanders will panic.” In Song of Solomon 6:4 and 10, the Bride of Christ

is described as being “terrible (frightening) as an army with banners.

Moses built an altar to the Lord and called it “The Lord is my banner” (Exodus 17:15). And we find in

Song of Solomon 2:4

that “His banner over us is love.”

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Sing praise upon the harp unto our God. Psalm 147:7

Play skillfully with a loud noise. Psalm 33:3

Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; praise Him with psaltery and harp, with timbrels, stringed instruments and organs. Praise Him upon the loud cymbals; praise Him upon the high sounding cymbals. Psalm 150:3-5

We believe a band, with musicians playing their instruments unto the Lord, are an essential part of

worship. And below, we see that, along with all

manner of noisemakers, the people “brought up the ark of the covenant” (a type of the Presence

of the Lord) with shouting!

SHOUTING

Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps. I Chronicles 15:28

...shout unto God with a voice of triumph. Psalm 47:1 Cry out and shout, for great is the Holy One in the midst of thee. Isaiah 12:6 Shouting releases us from our inhibitions to con-

nect with God in a unique way. Sometimes a shout is the beginning of our entrance into His

presence. Sometimes it is an exuberant response

to His manifest presence. Either way, we are re-leased into a dimension of worship which puts to

flight all oppression and discouragement

“Because He is your Lord, worship Him.”

CLAPPING

O clap your hands all ye people. Psalm 47:1

All of us have been given an instrument of

praise: our hands! Clapping helps us

make a joyful noise to the Lord.

(Psalm 98:4) It is a way to ex-

press happiness, excitement,

appreciation, and joy. If

we can clap at the end

of a wonderful perfor-

mance or exhilar-

ating speech,

how much

more should

we clap in

response to

our Savior!

Shout for joy to the Lord,

all the earth!

Worship the Lord with gladness;

come before Him with joyful songs…

Enter His gates with thanksgiving

and His courts with praise;

give thanks to Him

and praise His Name .

Psalm 100:1-2,4

WHY WE WORSHIP LIKE WE DO By Pastor Steve McCoy

If you have ever heard someone say, “worship God in whatever way you feel comfortable,” you may need

more information from the Bible before you decide how to respond. Choosing to worship in ways that

make you feel comfortable may not be pleasing to the Lord at all! Why? Because, it’s not our choice, but His, and in the Bible, God gives specific instructions on how we should worship. Being obedient in worship

now is preparing us for what’s happening in our eternal home. Take a look in Revelation and read what John saw; Heaven’s inhabitants fell down upon their faces and worshipped; they had harps and vials; they

sang; they worshipped with loud voices; they cast their crowns before the throne. There were lightnings, voices, thundering, an earthquake and hail. Sounds noisy to me, how about you? I encourage you to

come on in and partake of all God has for you in worship. I guarantee you will not be sorry, and you won’t

be surprised at the “joyful noise” you hear when you arrive in Heaven!

LIFTING OUR HANDS

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord. Psalm 134:1-2

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name. Psalm 63:3-4

I desire that in every place men should pray, lifting up holy hands. I Timothy 2:8

We honor sports teams, political figures and rock

stars by lifting our hands. There are thirty-nine Bible verses describing hand-raising in blessing or supplica-

tion. Both are a part of the worship experience, and

can and should be accompanied by the lifting up of our hands.

KNEELING/BOWING DOWN

O come let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our maker. Psalm 95:6 You may see worshippers at Beaches Chapel bending

down, kneeling down, or even prostrate before the

Presence of the Lord. All are biblical responses of humility and surrender. Jesus Himself knelt down and prayed before His Father. (Luke 22:41)

SINGING

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. 1 Chronicles 16:8-9 My tongue shall sing aloud of Thy righteousness. Psalm 51:14

Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving. Psalm 147:7 Singing to the Lord is mentioned 187 times in the Bible. It is an appropriate and audible re-

sponse in worship! We are even told what to

sing:

Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. Psalm 119:54

Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, sing-ing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Ephesians 5:18-19

SINGING IN TONGUES

I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 1 Corinthians 14:15

To sing with the understanding is to sing in our native tongue. To sing with the spirit is to sing in our God-given prayer language, with words

only He understands, words the Bible says edi-fies (worships) the Lord Jesus.

For more explanation on this, see our brochure on The Baptism in the Holy Ghost.

STANDING

Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is ex-alted above all blessing and praise. Nehemiah 9:5

But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee. Acts 26:16

Why do we stand for worship? Standing is His Presence is an act of honor, just as we would stand up for a king

or president. How much more should we stand up for our God, the King of Kings and the Lord of all the earth!

there is liberty.” II CORINTHIANS 3:17
