Winning her first WPRA World Championship on her homegrown mare Flos Heiress (“Babyflo”) by literally 6/100ths of a second in the tenth and final round of the 2014 Wrangler National Rodeo was as she said “made for TV” drama. Had WNFR Champion Lisa Lockhart and her great horse An Oakie With Cash (“Louie”) placed three spots higher in the final round the title would have gone home to Oelrich, S.D. Yet, real drama is found in the overcoming of seeming insur- mountable obstacles—getting knocked down again…and again… and again, only to rise up again, better, stronger and wiser. That last round may have crowned Taylor the world champion in truth, but her real title came at the conclusion of the 10th round of the 2013 WNFR. “The game was changed last December when I made such an embarrassing showing,” Taylor acknowledged. “My mare didn’t get the credit that she deserves. She had won Horse of the Year and she didn’t get to make the kind of showing we expected her to make. We went home and redid everything—changed saddles, changed bits, changed everything until we figured out what would make her more consis- tent. It took about 90 days to solidify that. You’ve got a horse that’s already been to the NFR; it’s pretty hard to retrain them to be different. To go back and do that… that was a lot of hard work that we’ll never regret.” The First Four A barrel racing prodigy, Taylor, a Florida native, jumped head first into the sport, buying her permit at the tender age of 9, after watching the Mesquite Rodeo on televi- sion. Her parents Shelton and Dian relocated the family to North Texas and set about pairing Taylor with the best trainers and horses. The late Larry Stevens paired Taylor with the talented Flit Bar stallion Dr Nick Bar. The stallion filled her permit and taught her the finer points of barrel racing. “Dr Nick Bar was a present for my 9th birthday,” Taylor told Barrel Racing Report last year. “They made a major investment in him for me. He’s the one I filled my permit on after I won my first rodeo in Lafayette, La. My parents had incredible foresight, for not being horse people, to purchase him and then mount me on a really great mare. That’s where this whole thing started.” After Stevens passed, Rick Manucy took over mentoring Taylor. It was Manucy who recommended buying a fractious little mare off the track named Flowers And Money (“FloJo”). Skip The Finances passes This past week on December 11, 2014, the former NFR horse, Skip The Finances was laid to rest. Better known as Zoey, this bay mare with a strip was born on May 11, 2004. She was bred by Jesse Sheffield and owned and ridden her whole life by Jesse and Jody Sheffield. She was by Financially and out of the Skipbar Crystola mare Skip Chris Coy. When Jody threw a leg over Zoey, they were headed to the winner’s circle. The pair won the Pendleton Round-Up in 2010 to push them into position to qualify for Rodeo Hous-ton in 2011. They went on to win Rodeo Houston and qualify for the NFR that year. Zoey and Jody placed in 5 of 10 rounds and the average at the NFR. *We send our condolences to Jody and Jesse on the loss of their great mare. Rest in peace Zoey.

Style Show and Luncheon supports crisis Fund The 27th annual Pro Rodeo League of Women Style Show & Luncheon was once again a huge success, raising $85,000 for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. It has been a collective effort by wives, mothers and friends of rodeo contestants who have worked diligently to raise money with the luncheon tickets, raffles, auction items and donations for a fun-filled event that has become a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) tradition. Hosted by Michael and Paula Gaughan at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa, this event has raised over $1.5 million that has been given back to rodeo contestants who are injured and need financial assistance for living expenses. Among the models were WNFR barrel racing qualifiers Nancy Hunter, Jana Bean, Christine Laughlin, Brittany Diaz, Mary Walker, and Christy Loflin. Tuf Cooper, Jacobs and Sterling Crawley along with a special appearance by internet sensation Dale Brisby were among the entertainment. Other models included contestants’ wives – Cassidy (Jessy) Davis, Brittany (Dru) Melvin, Jordan (Riley) Minor, Morgan (Tyler) Corrington, Denver (Ryan) Watkins, and Kaysie (Aaron) Pass. There was also a contingent of rodeo kids sporting fashion from Wrangler’s All-Around Baby Collection. Sharon Camarillo and Jennifer Smith provided a running com-mentary. Coors Man in the Can John Harrison assisted with raffle items and his wife, Carla, provided auctioneer services. The event is spearheaded by Tracy Hedeman and Stacy Custer, who put together a team of volunteers who work all year long to make each year’s event bigger and better. “I’m constantly amazed at how the rodeo family comes together and supports each other,” said Karl Stressman, commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund board member. “The dedication of these

women, the sponsors and donors is unsurpassed. Not only are they raising valuable funds, they are keeping Western traditions alive and well.” Injuries are an inevitable part of rodeo competition and for the athletes, injuries often mean they are not able to make a living. That realization brought the PRCA, Women’s Professional Rodeo As-sociation and the Justin Boot Company together to start the crisis fund in 1989. Since that time they have awarded nearly $7 million in need-based assistance to over 1,000 injured rodeo athletes and their families.

meet the 2014 Farnam AQHA Superhorse Talented American Quarter Horse Twisters Enola Rey earns the Farnam AQHA Superhorse title at the 2014 AQHA World Champi-onship Show. Twisters Enola Rey was crowned the 2014 Farnam AQHA Super-horse on November 22 at the 2014 AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. The Superhorse Award, the top honor at the AQHA World Show, is awarded to the horse who earns the most points in three or more events in two categories during the show. This year, 49 contenders competed for the Farnam AQHA Superhorse Award. The 2009 sorrel gelding, who is by Dual Rey and out of Twist-ers Enola Gay, was shown by owner and breeder AQHA Profes-sional Horseman and Team Wrangler member C.R. Bradley of Collinsville, Texas. It was the first time the award was won by an owner-breeder-exhibitor. The pair accumulated 33 points, earning the world championship title in junior tie-down roping and reserve championship title in junior heeling. The Farnam Superhorse receives $25,000, plus $2,000 of Farnam product, a WeatherBeeta blanket, an original Lisa Perry bronze and a rose bouquet. The Reserve Farnam Superhorse was Dirty Sexy Money, owned by Janet and Kent Martin of Wells, Texas. The 2007 gray gelding, who is by Sheiks Big Leaguer and out of Fight Over Emmie, was bred by Melissa Ann Miller of Belton, Texas. Dirty Sexy Money was shown in three classes by AQHA Profes-sional Horseman Chuck Briggs of Azle, Texas; Virginia Beaton of Middleport, New York; and Brian Homes of Purcell, Oklahoma. The team earned 26 points. Dirty Sexy Money won the reserve championship title in senior working hunter and placed fifth in senior hunter hack and senior pleasure driving. The Reserve Farnam Superhorse received a prize package that included $10,000, plus $1,000 in Farnam product.

NFr 2014 continued From Page 1the daughter of On The Money Red out of the Thoroughbred mare Floralie would carry Taylor to her first four NFR appearances.“She had a real quirky personality,” Taylor told the Report. “She’s one-person, type horse. She and I bonded like crazy. There weren’t many people that liked to be around that mare except for me. We had something really special. I just absolutely loved her. “She was a little different. She was very anxious. In retrospect I would have done a lot of things different. I would have got on her at the last minute, but I was kid and I wanted to go walk and lope around. Now, Babyflo doesn’t get the same treatment because I’m older and I know better.” For all they won, there was one thing that Taylor and FloJo couldn’t do—win in the Thomas & Mack. Always problematic in the alleyway, FloJo and Taylor were doomed in the long tunnel in the Thomas & Mack. When the judges had reached the limits of their tolerance to FloJo’s antics, Taylor was forced to ride something else. At her first NFR, Taylor rode True Identity for the last seven rounds and finished second in the average to Kristie Peterson and French Flash Hawk (“Bozo”). However, from 1996 to 1998, Tay-lor’s NFR experiences could best be described as nightmares.“Every year since I was jump riding or leasing something,” Taylor recalled. “Nothing I’ve ever got on enjoyed that arena. It’s never been a place where I had reached any kind of success that I hoped for in that arena.” When Taylor returned to the Thomas & Mack in 2013 for her fifth WNFR after a 12-year absence, she was hoping to showcase the talent of the daughter of her first two superstars. She was hop-ing that Babyflo would do something she FloJo could never do—have a good NFR. The precocious mare, that had been broke to ride barely two years earlier, ran wild and hit barrel, after barrel, after barrel. It was an experience that would have left many broken, but for Taylor, it

was the experience that made her a world champion. Instead of throwing the proverbial “sucker in the dirt,” Taylor went home and went to retraining. The effort paid off handily, when on dangerous footing, Taylor and Babyflo won the opening round of the WNFR.“They could have shut it down that night after the first round and I would have been happy,” laughed Taylor. “I’d made 51 runs in that arena without winning a buckle or making a victory lap. When I did that I looked at my husband and said ‘Okay, shut it down; let’s go home. I’m good!’ “She’s such an incredible little mare; I felt like I had already won the world. It’s such an amazing experience. I still can’t believe it. It was so fun to go in there let her work as a brand new horse. I could put her absolutely anywhere.”

changing the Game Change doesn’t scare Taylor. The 32-year-old from Whitesboro, Texas, thrives on it. At this year’s NFR she used it to her advantage.

Barrel Racing Report December 16, 2014 Page 6

“You have to prepare for (the NFR) in a completely different way than just focusing on where the barrels are staked in that arena,” said Taylor. “It’s so different. It’s a mental game like no other. You can watch the other events and the people who start off winning start breaking away from the pack. The group that’s struggling—it doesn’t even seem like they can even pick their head up out of the dirt. I know. I’ve been there. I know what that feels like and my heart breaks from them. It seems like you can’t do anything right. It’s nice to finally be on the other side, because I hadn’t been there before.” Rather than prepare for the NFR as she had done in the past—even going so far as to set up an NFR arena and pattern at home—Taylor worked harder mentally rather than physically.“Rather than prepare for the arena,” she said, “we spent a lot of time mentally preparing for the experience. It made all the differ-ence in the world.” Taylor, who is sponsored by Tech Mix, Professional’s Choice, Team Heston, ProVision, Ranchdressn, Equi Bodyflo, Mirage and Jaco Brands, kept much of Babyflo’s routine the same with daily Equi Bodyflo vibration plate treatments every day. “Babyflo’s routine was just like it was at any other rodeo with one exception,” she explained. “If they had practice time, I was the first one there. Last year I didn’t practice at all. I had the mentality that taking her in the pen would make her shorter. This time I learned from all of the other world champions, watching them practice and seeing what they did, obviously they’ve got the formula down right. I decided that I would stalk them a little bit and see what their rou-tines were, and it seemed like the ones that were the most consistent would always practice. Babyflo and I never go in a pen before we run. We never go to any practice sessions. But the NFR—you just don’t do everything the same; it doesn’t work in that setup.”In practice, Taylor concentrated on her slow work, mostly walk-

ing and trotting, but would lope through to make sure she had her spots picked out correctly. “I made no runs in practice,” she said. “I would end each practice with a lope through and making sure I could move her around like a video game. It was more for me than her. It was me trying to find my spots on the wall. Even when I was riding my grand entry horse I would be hunting those spots to make sure I had them all down. You get so tired here that you lose focus really easy. I had men-tally practiced for five to ten minutes a day. For the tenth round, I mentally practiced for about 10 hours to the point that I was driving everyone nuts!” Although tempted to overindulge Babyflo with pampering during the grueling 10 days, especially in light of her stellar performances, Taylor had to abide by the mare’s wishes. “She’s like a little kid, when she sees me, she’s like, ‘Oh mom, leave me alone. I tried to stay out of her hair as much as possible. She was so sick of seeing me. I just want to hug her and pet her, but she’s just not that kind. I can hang on her stall for about five minutes then she’ll push me out. ‘Okay, you’ve had your fun. Now get out!’”

Counter Flo Taylor’s flamboyant style earned her the Jerry Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award even with her non-tradition headgear. Taylor was the first barrel racer to wear a helmet at the NFR since Delores Toole was paid by Troxel to do so. “Changing anything is not that big of a deal to me,” said Taylor. “I was asked by the owners of Slick By Design—Charlie Cole and Jason Martin of High Point Performance Horses—to be the am-bassador and maybe wear it one night, because it’s so important for child safety. It wasn’t a plan, but after I put one on for the first time; I was like this is for me. We were scrambling to find helmets and

spray paint them to match.” The helmet delighted many fans, but wasn’t without controversy. “I’m surprised that the stigma is so thick, even for me with a head injury,” said Taylor, who noted that several charities stepped up to further the helmet movement. “I should have been wearing one long ago. I think people are going to be more surprised when I con-tinue to wear it all year long. There are 70,000 horse-related head injuries a year. Maybe me wearing one will prevent some of those. “It’s been a really cool thing. I think new fans with young children and they’re having to explain why they need a helmet, they don’t have anyone to point to, to say ‘that’s why you wear a helmet.’ My God, it’s 15 seconds. It’s a wardrobe change, and I’m all about ward-robe changes!” Taylor stayed very active with her fans at the trade shows and on social media, but was able to block all of the negativity that comes with the limelight. “I’ve got a girl on my staff and I tell her the things that I want to go up,” she said. “I delated all social media off of my phone and it made such a big difference. My fellow competitors would be like ‘Hey, keep doing what you’re doing. Don’t pay attention to what they’re saying on social media.’ I’m like ‘I have no idea what they’re saying on social media. Have a good one!’ I don’t think Tiger Wood or Kobie Bryant would be able to do what they do if they cared about public opinion. I’m doing really cool things in the sport and with that comes a lot people who don’t like what you’re doing or how you’re doing it.” World champion Outside of taking a few weeks rest, Taylor doesn’t know what the next year will hold. She will haul for the NFR again, but also has several more irons in the fire including the arrival Babyflo’s off-spring by Slick By Design and Blazin Jetolena. “I don’t know what our grand plan is,” she said. “My business is

growing. My clothing line is growing. I’ve got Babyflo babies that are hitting the ground this spring. I’ve got futurity horses in training and entered for the next year. I’m branching out, so we’ll just have to see how that goes. I just want to keep people having a passion for the sport—first it was tie dye and sequins, now it’s helmets. I just want to do whatever I can do to keep people stirred up and passionate about our industry. “It’s all about passion. I don’t care if you love barrel racing, but hate me with a passion—as long as you have passion about some-thing, I’m good with it.”

by Julie mankin A filly by Dinero won all the slot-race dinero at the 29th Annual BFA World Championships in Oklahoma City, piloted by a 30-year-old trainer from Pennsylvania named Aimee Kay. Running in the 29th position for the big $100,000 payday in the SuperStakes on Dec. 9, Kay clocked a time of 15.626 that was “kind of a blur.” “I remember running down the alley and running home, but that’s it,” she said of her performance on LK ShezaPeasaDinero (“Daisy Duke”). “It wasn’t until I heard the announcer say I had taken the lead that I knew how it went.” Rather than watching the rest of the barrel race, Kay went back to the stall area and reminisced with friends about how well the horse had come on during the summer months. “She just keeps it simple, which makes it easy,” Kay said.Kay has lived north of Stephenville, Texas, for seven or eight years, but last summer she traveled to Canada, the home of her boyfriend, Brock Butterfield (who broke Daisy Duke). “I’ve never really went at it before like I did with this horse,” she said. “I stuck her in the trailer in April to go to Canada and hauled her to exhibition in lots of different arenas, and at rodeos I would get up at 5 a.m. and work her. I wanted to make sure she was pre-pared.” Kay had gone to one jackpot north of the border and won it on an older horse she was seasoning. Afterward, she exhibitioned Daisy Duke in a hurry, without warming her up much – and got bucked off in the middle of the arena. She and the Butterfields were laughing about that incident when the slot race wrapped up and she was announced the champion. The $100,000 prize made this the biggest win of her career and it made the hard work of hunting for that slot pay off big-time.

“When the filly was running so good this summer, I called every-body I could call looking to lease a slot,” Kay said. “Finally I saw one mentioned on Facebook and freaked out. I about lost it when I was scrolling through there and saw there was one available.” It was Kati Jacobs’ slot, and Kay made the investment work for her. Cody Bauserman had been leading for half the slot race with his 15.7 on Ruby Heart Stealer, and he would hold onto second place. The difference between his time and third-place Latricia Duke on My Lady Bug Leo was a teeny one-thousandth of a sec-ond, and it cost Duke the difference between Bauserman’s $35,000 check and her own for $23,000. It had been five years since Kay had competed in a slot race, and she said her horse that year hadn’t been prepared. While the pressure to win that much money can be nerve-wracking, Kay said having her current filly prepared meant she wasn’t really nervous – she just wanted to go make a nice run. “She’s so easy it’s not even funny,” she said of Daisy Duke. “This summer I moved hundreds of cows on her at a Canadian ranch and I thought she’d freak out at that, but she has handled everything great that we’ve shown her so far.” Kay trains horses for a living for her father, Leo Kay, of Pennsyl-vania. Daisy Duke is by the Potter Ranch stallion PC Frenchmans Hayday and out of a mare that Aimee successfully competed on at rodeos. Sheza Peasa Pie is by Pie In The Sky and out of a Truckle Feature/Pass Em Up mare. Last year, Kay ran a 3-year-old named LK Pistol Annie, also by PC Frenchmans Hayday or “Dinero” and out of a Martha’s Six Moons mare. Kay feels if she’d have also taken that filly to Canada, she’d have had the same kind of chance in 2013. But she’ll take this win a year later, no problem.

by Julie mankin Jordon Briggs doesn’t typically compete on 3-year-old barrel horses. In fact, the 29th Annual BFA World Championships on Dec. 8-13 marked just the second time she has entered the Juvenile Fu-turity. Eight years ago, Briggs won the actual Futurity in Oklahoma City on Frenchman’s Jester – the horse she rode a few years later straight to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. And this year, on the sorrel blaze-faced filly Frenchman’s Future, Briggs was fastest over two rounds by two-tenths of a second to rake in a cool $22,881 and the juvenile world championship. In Oklahoma City, Briggs also placed fourth in the Derby on HBS Mayan Gold for $2,813 and 15th in the Futurity on 5-year-old Ima Friendly Guy to earn $5,388 plus $10,662 in Future Fortunes money. The Briggs family left Oklahoma City with roughly $42,000.In the Juvenile Futurity aboard Stoli, Jordon had nabbed second in the first round with a 15.5, then came back to win the second round with a 15.4. Meanwhile, Kelsey Deal on Jud Little’s colt Especially Frosted had placed third in both rounds on a 15.6 and a 15.5. Deal settled for the reserve title and $14,383. Frenchman’s Future (“Stoli”) is by Frenchman’s Guy and out of Sixes Future – a Stoli daughter that came off the Four Sixes ranch with a bottom line boasting the great ranch-horse blood of Tan-query Gin and Peppy San Badger. “My parents bought that Stoli mare at the Heritage Place sale seven or eight years ago,” Briggs said. “She is also the dam to Stoli My Guy.” That means the phenomenal broodmare produced the Juvenile world champion and the Derby reserve world champion this year. Unfortunately, the mare cut herself badly a couple of years ago and Kristie and Chuck Peterson had to put her down.

Regarding style, Brigg said that while the buckskin Stoli My Guy stands up and has a somewhat stiffer turn, her own filly is different. “She’s really bendy and kind of drops down low and sucks around a barrel,” said Briggs. “A lot of people watch her and think she’s a Dash Ta Fame because she has such a wrappy style.” The legendary world champion Kristie Peterson, Jordon’s mom, mostly just raises horses now to break for her grandkids, and Stoli immediately didn’t fit the bill. “She’s always been a tough mare that you had to ride quite a bit,” said Briggs. “So my mom had my husband, Justin, break her and put her in the 2013 Myers Performance Horse sale.” But then Justin and Jordon fell in love with the filly, and hiked her price tag up. She didn’t bring the money, so they brought her home and traded a more kid-friendly colt to Kristie in return for owner-ship of the promising Frenchman’s Future. As soon as Jordon started her on the barrels, she was impressed, especially with the way Justin had the filly broke in preparation for the sale. “The third day, she already loped through the pattern totally natu-ral and perfect,” Jordon said. “I thought, ‘Holy crap,’ and I turned her back out for three months!” Then Jordon hauled her along to the fall futurities so she could bond with the filly and become friends. “Honestly, the barrel racing end of it has always been really easy for her,” Briggs said. “But as a riding horse, she is pretty tough. She gets pushy and has a lot of ‘go,’ although she’s not hot or spooky. The hardest thing about training her was how fast she is. She runs and turns on her own so I don’t have to hustle her, which has been an adjustment. It’s hard for me to find a rhythm with her when I’m kind of sitting and not moving in sync with her. It took me a little

bFA Juvenile continued From Page 22while to figure out the timing. Plus, it’s hard to trust that a 3-year-old running that fast will drop down and turn!” Briggs exhibitioned the filly throughout the fall season, with the high point coming in September at the Five States Futurity in Rapid City, S.D., when Stoli clocked times that would have placed in both rounds and would have made Briggs high call headed into the short round. She took it easy with the filly at that point, but hauled her to a race in Glen Rose, Texas, just after Dec. 1. Stoli clocked a 15.1 there to win the juvenile class by three-tenths of a second and place sixth in the 1D with 400 runners. The future for Frenchman’s Future looks like this – Briggs plans to take her to the first two futurities in Buckey, Ariz., and then give her some time off before the Lance Graves Pro Classic, where she’s decided to lease a slot. Until then, when they’re home, they’ll be roping on her and riding her like usual. In fact, Justin Briggs ropes on each barrel horse in training, and heels on Stoli. Each colt knows at least three events, with Jordon training them on barrels and poles and Justin heading and heeling on them. The Briggs husband-and-wife team train their own horses, occasionally buying long yearlings and raising their own via a few broodmares and their recently-acquired stallion, Mr. Cin-namon Roll. The couple is excited about babies growing now that started as embryos out of some Frenchman’s Guy mares bred to Dash Ta Fame, Born Ta Be Famous and Mr. Cinnamon Roll. But they’ll still just train one to three futurity horses per season and sell two or three horses a year. “I try to keep the numbers down so Justin and I can spend a lot of time with them and never feel overwhelmed,” Jordon said. “So far, we’ve been very blessed to be able to do our own thing. We’ll stay on that train while it keeps going!”

Multiple World Futurity Champion Troy Crumrine found his way back into the winner’s circle at the BFA’s signature event in Okla-homa City with a one-two punch in the $70,000-added Futurity. TheleadingfuturityriderfromWaynesfield,Ohio,tooktophon-ors on WB Toole Ta Fame (“Crockett”), owned and bred by Nick Wylie of Swanton, Ohio. Crockett, a 4-year-old gelding by Dash Ta Fame out of Jody Was There Too, by Jody O Toole, was broke to ride by Wylie before starting his barrel racing career under the guid-ance of Kelly Bowser. Both Wylie and Bowser had won the gelding before Crumrine climbed in the saddle. “He’s had a little hard luck,” said Crumrine, “but most of it has

been me getting my timing with him. It seemed like I’d always do really good in a round and then comeback and bump a barrel with him. He’s really easy, almost too easy.” Crumrine and Crockett won all but the second go of the Futurity where they had to settle for second. All totaled, the gelding won $48,948. Assuring himself of a victory, Crumrine also took reserve hon-ors on the paint Famous Kickin Jo. The Paint, by the late Famous Jr out of the proven barrel horse Kickin Jo (APHA), by Kickin Coun-try, actually out ran Crockett in the short go, but couldn’t make up the difference to grab the lead. The reserve championship was still

Dominating Performance by Crumrine & WB Toole Ta Fame

worth $31,595. “Both horses were just really consistent,” said Crumrine. “Both horses really got solid later in the year. I was telling the owners that Kickin Jo ran a .3, .4 and .5 and WB ran a .2, .3 and .4 out there. You really can’t ask for more than that.”

Barrel Racing Report  December 16, 2014  Page 34

by Julie mankin Twenty-two-year-old Emilie Veillette of Mascouche, Quebec, was 25th in the first round of the Derby at the 29th Annual BFA World Championships, Dec. 8-13 in Oklahoma City. But her fifth-place time of 15.475 in the second round on SV Pass Em Fire was enough to get her into the finals with a chance at a world champi-onship. In the first round, Veillette said she was riding too conservatively in order to make sure she didn’t hit a barrel on the turny gelding. So in round two, the only thing she was thinking was “go fast.” And that mindset carried her into the finals. But at that point, Marley warmed up terribly. “Usually he’s really listening and super soft, and he wasn’t,” said Veillette in broken English (her first language is French). “I thought, ‘Oh my God,’ and I asked Jolene [Montgomery] what I should do to get him soft and to listen. She told me to use a bigger bit to work him and then go run him in his usual bit. So that’s what I did. When Jolene says something, I listen to her because it’s going to work! It gave me confidence to be with her and have her helping me. I know how good she is and I know I can trust her.” In the top-20 finals, the fastest time turned in was Molli Mont-gomery’s 15.354 on Royal And Famous. But Veillette posted a 15.390, and it was enough to give her the average title over Lisa Nicholas and Stoli My Guy by just five-hundredths on their two fastest runs. “I always keep in the back of my mind, it’s possible,” said Veil-lette. “When you work, everything is possible. It’s so tough and a lot of people have more experience, so you never know. But I told Jolene I was going to go in there to first barrel like I was going to war. I told myself, ‘Ride like you’re Jolene; ride like you’re the best.’ I was smiling and having fun and proud to be with Jolene and Molli and good horses and my mom to help me.” The Derby average race was super tight, with less than two-tenths of a second separating the top six horses. And it was the Derby that featured the most blistering time of the entire World Champion-ships. Lisa Thornton won the second round by three-tenths with a 15.037, worth $2,956. To put that in perspective, the two rounds of the Open were won with a 15.4 and a 15.2, respectively. Incidentally, the fastest finalist in the Amateur division was Cindy Mainus, who clocked a 15.692 in the finals on BB Runnin On Time to earn $1,650. Veillette calls her horse Marley, and he’s a 6-year-old palomino gelding by the Firewater Flit/Nonstop Jet son KY Finest Firewater, and out of a Pass Em Up granddaughter who is by Burnell (Easy Jet/Royal Charger). His total take in the Derby was $9,061, while reserve champ Nicholas earned $8,155. But it’s not the first big finals for Marley, who was purchased by Veillette’s mom, Sophia Longpre, when he ran through the BFA sale as a 2-year-old. “Somebody really good broke him at the beginning,” Veillette said. “It was a reining trainer that put a good start on him. Since day

one, he never had a bad day. He won a round in the juvenile when he was 3 and was reserve world champion. Then he also made the finals as a futurity horse. Last year, I ran him in the derby and hit a barrel so I didn’t make the finals. This year, my only goal was to go and make the finals. They give sheets when you make the finals. He had his juvie and futurity sheets and I wanted the derby one!” Veillette’s mother had been a barrel racer and her father a bull-dogger at one time, but now she’s the only one in her family to compete. She’s currently living in Texas at Jolene Montgomery’s place and will return to Quebec sometime after Old Fort Days. “In Quebec, everyone thinks it impossible to come here and it’s too tough to win,” she said. “I just wanted to see what it was when I first came in 2009 with a futurity horse. I didn’t place because it was not fast enough but I thought, ‘I need to go back there. I know it’s possible.’ So Mom bought the yellow horse and we work on him every day to get him ready for that juvenile futurity.”It was just before that event in 2011 that Veillette met Montgomery. “She was like, my idol, since she was at Jud’s,” said Veillette. “In 2011, I thought, I need to go ride with that girl; she’s so good and I want to learn from her.”So the French teenager simply called her up and asked if she could show up. “The Montgomery girls are great people,” she said. “They’re not scared to help. Even when I was running against Molli, she was helping me.” Veillette , who also ran a 5-year-old futurity horse and two juve-nile horses in Oklahoma City, enjoys competing at IPRA rodeos in Quebec each summer on Marley. But she also enjoys the challenge of riding babies, and is excited about her two colts out of Marley’s dam and two others by his sire. “We’ve always been riding young horses,” explained Veillette. “We don’t have money to buy others, so we buy some young and train them and go futurity on them and sell them. I always plan to sell my horses after the futurities, but Marley is one I want to keep. He’s the first horse to win something super big. I didn’t even know what I was really doing and made a lot of mistakes because I was learning and I’m still learning. But I can’t sell him. He’s been so good for me. That’s how people know me is because of him.”Quebeck draws plenty of barrel racers from Texas and Oklahoma in the summer because the rodeos are close and add good money, she said. However, it’s not really a place for a trainer to make a living because people don’t spend money on training like they do here. Most folks own one or two horses and train them on their own. The other difference is one more reason she looks forward to someday moving permanently to the U.S. “In Texas, everyone says hi and is smiling and everyone wants to help you,” she explained. “In Quebec it’s like New York City. They walk fast and if you make a mistake, everyone will yell at you. They don’t smile and they don’t say hi. When I’m in Texas all winter and go back home for a week and go in a Wal-Mart and say hi, people

Joy Wargo, Gainesville, Texas, and Smokin Koa Lena dominated the Victory Farms Open 4Ds, winning both rounds with runs of 15.421 and 15.229 worth $2,202 each. Those were the fifth straight winning runs in the Jim Norick Arena for the pair since the short go of the Oklahoma Summer Shootout in August. The “Smoke,” by Rocky Heir out of That’s Parr For Lena, by Jacks Doc Olena, also won the AQHA Senior Barrel Racing World Championship in the arena. Once for sale as a dogging horse as a 3-year-old, Smoke made Wargo a household name in the futurity world as a 4-year-old. After a brief rodeo career with a new owner, Smoke returned to Wargo’s barn over a year ago. The horse called “the king of second place” during his futurity year has found his groove as an 8-year-old.

Juniors Decorated youth rider Jackie Ganter, Abilene, Texas, topped the Juniors with Cartels Fame for $1,240. After the disappointment of failing to make the finals in the Derby—Cartel’s last—Ganter topped the Juniors by nearly 3/10ths. The extremely fast 6-year-old gelding is by Dash Ta Fame out of Corona Koolaid, by Corona Cartel. Ganter, who graduated high school this December, filled her WPRA permit the weekend she turned 18 and has placed at two pro rodeos in the 2015 season with Cartel. She hopes to make the most of her rookie year in the WPRA, starting off the winter run with rodeos in Odessa, Denver and Rapid City this January.

The 5th Annual C-N California Futurity/Derby paid out a total of $55,995 in prize money and $15,000 in awards. Well, the old saying goes, “You can’t take a good thing down”. This year was no exception, we continue to grow bigger and better. With the weather forecast changing on us at the last minute, quick decisions had to be made. Thanks to a great group of friends and an awesome Fairgrounds crew we were able to make the decision and move in less than 48 hours. So we loaded up 5 rigs with the help of a helping hands, and we set off to Chowchilla, CA Fair-grounds. The C-N Stallion Auction had 40 beautiful well-bred stallions donate to our auction this year to raise $24,000 to this year’s added futurity pot, doubling our last year’s total of just $12,000. We have now implemented the C-N Stallion Incentive Program which is growing fast. This program is free to all stallions who donate a breeding to the C-N Stallion Service Auction on a continuing basis. The auction starts on October 15th of each year. 100% of the money raised from this program goes to the C-N California Futu-rity and C-N Stallion Incentive Program. bFA World barrel SaleDecember 12, 2014, Oklahoma city, OK

The 2014 edition of the BFA World Barrel Sale, on December 12, 2014, produced by Going Big Time Sales Company continued the year long trend of the elite bred barrel horses selling for top money. The sale crowd responded to the new Friday night sale time by showing up ready to buy and filling up the alleys. The sale stayed strong throughout with 99 head of horses, including sales & repurchases, grossing, $938,500 and averaging $9,576 per head. The average of the Top 5 horses that sold was an astounding $51,000 and the Top 10 average for sold horses was a nice $34,190. Topping the sale was Lot 67, Promises To Streak, consigned by James Ranch and purchased by Suzanne Hill for a bell ringing $114,000. This nice red roan stud colt by Million Dollar & NFR barrel sire, A Streak Of Fling (who in good timing sired the 1st and 2nd place barrel horses at the NFR the same night), was out of the blue hen mare, Pie Sky Promises. Pie Sky Promises was not only a great barrel mare herself, but she has since proved to be one of the best producers in the business. She produced 3 different earners of over $100k in the barrel arena by different sires and then produced two Triple A racehorses as well. In fact, just last year, her son Prom-ise Me A Wagon won the BFA Superstakes and took home a $100k check from the BFA. This well built colt commanded a lot of atten-tion due to his sire and dam but also due to his outcross pedigree for Dash Ta Fame, Frenchmans Guy and Fire Water Flit daughters. His $114,000 price tag is believed to be a record for barrel racing prospects selling at public auction. The second high selling horse of the auction, again displaying top sire and dam power, was Lot 57, Famous Twist. The striking stud by Dash Ta Fame is out of the great Flit Bar Beggar mare, Flit Bars Ida Bay, who is a 3/4 sister to the NFR horse for Lana Mer-

rick, Scoti Flit Bar. The double registered (AQHA/APHA) 2 year old stud, was well started and ready to head to the barrel pen. He was consigned by Lana Merrick and sold to Teri K. Harper Dufur for $50,000. It is a sure bet that Famous Twist and the high seller Promises To Streak will eventually join the sires ranks just like their sires. The third high seller was another front of the book bred pros-pect, selling as Lot 59, Frenchmans Dashnista, the Frenchmans Guy daughter out of the Dash Ta Fame mare, Dashon Wandie brought a tidy $40,000. Consigned by T Barrel Ranch and purchased by Shelly Jensen, this mare was started and ready to move into barrel training. The eye-catching palomino filly, who displayed one of the most popular crosses in the barrel industry, is sure to end up in the winner’s circle and the broodmare band later in life. The BFA World Barrel Sale is held in conjunction with the BFA World Championship each year. More information about the sale & results can be found at www.goingbigtime.com. Barrel Racing Report  December 16, 2014  Page 49

Norman, OK – The richest breeders’ incentive in the barrel rac-ing industry, Future Fortunes awarded just shy of $500,000 at select events across the United States and Canada in 2014. An impressive $205,600 was paid at the BFA World Championships, held Dec. 8-13 in Oklahoma City, alone. “This was the best year for Future Fortunes,” says founder Mary Ellen Hickman. “To be able to award $500,000 this year after just 12 years of existence is just amazing.” The addition of the Sires’ Slots for the Juvenile and Futurity to the Fortunes Round elevated Future Fortunes to another level. With the Sires’ Slot, stallion owners can purchase slots for any of colts by their stallions entered in the event. It’s up to the stallion owner if they’d like to share or sell the slots to the individual horse owners. “The response to the Sires’ Slots has been phenomenal,” says Hickman. “They’ve done exactly what I thought they would. They’ve pushed Future Fortunes over the top.” To raise the gamble, the Sires’ Slots for the Futurity will change in 2015. Rather than offering a $10,000-added Sires’ Slots with next year’s BFA Futurity (for 4-year-olds), the Sires’ Slots will be at the Old Fort Days Futurity. Thus the three slot races available through Future Fortunes are the Sires’ Slots with the BFA Juvenile, Old Fort Days Futurity and then the Fortunes Round run within the BFA’s 4-year-old Futurity. It should be noted that Fortunes Round horses have be named in the fall of their 3-year-old year for the 4-year-old futurity the following December. “We could have a $100,000 winner with the Future Fortunes Trifec-ta,” says Hickman. “If someone wins all three, they’ll win a $100,000 bonus. It’s possible we’ll have a winner in 2015 since Jud Little’s Especially Frosted won the Juvenile Sires’ Slot at this year’s BFA and is named to the Fortunes Round next December.”

Juvenile Sires’ Slot champions Especially Frosted, a 2011 daughter of Jud Little’s leading sire Bug In My Frosty out of Especially Phoebe, by Special Effort, earned $25,000 for topping the two-run, $10,000-added Juvenile Sires’ Slots. The mare was ridden by Kelsey Deal on behalf of Little, her owner and breeder. Future Fortunes also honor first-year Future Fortunes stallion in the Sires Slots with freshman sire awards. Honors A Bound-ing, owned by Peggy Olfert of Scio, Ore., had the highest placing offspring of all first-year Future Fortunes stallion in the Juvenile. The honor earned Olfert $1,500 and a crystal cup. Tomahawk N Firewa-ter, owned by Anderson Quarter Horses, LLC, Jonesboro, Ark., was the reserve champion freshman sire in the Juvenile, earning $1,000.

Futurity Sires’ Slot champions Tsunami Sue, a 4-year-old mare by Ketel Won out of BB Royalty Reigns, by Royal Quick Dash, topped the Futurity Sires’ Slots for $25,000. The mare is owned by Donnie and Diane Reece of Fayette-ville, Tenn., and was ridden by Donnie. Tsunami Sue also finished the reserve champion in the regular Future Fortunes Bonus for total earnings of $30,265. MP Jet To The Sun, owned by David James of Wayne, Okla., was the top freshman sire in the Futurity Sires’ Slots, earning $1,500. The reserve champion was Pyron Six, owned by the Go Racing Partner-ship, Lance Graves of Hartshorne, Okla., earning $1,000.Fortunes Round In the Fortunes Round, a sidepot within the BFA World Champi-onship Futurity, Kassie Mowry guided yet another champion—Fire-watermakemehappy for nurse practitioner Martha Smith, Hazelhurst, Miss. Firewatermakemehappy, a 4-year-old gelding by Firewater-ontherocks out of Junior Country Girl, by Deep Note Jr, was bred by Karma Loftin, Dublin, Texas. It was also the second Fortunes Round Champion produced by Junior Country Girl, who produced Grace Master. Firewatermakemehappy was the richest Future Fortunes horse of the event, earning $42,225 in bonuses. The Fortunes Round was

worth $25,000 to the gelding’s connections, plus $2,500 to stallion owner Robyn Herring. He also picked up $10,000 for reserve in the Futurity Sires’ Slots and $4,725 in the regular Future Fortunes Bonus, which unlike the slot races has no additional entry fee.

$45,000 bFA Future Fortunes bonus Of the nearly $500,000 awarded by Future Fortunes, $346,000 was offered with no additional entry fees aside from the nomination fees—as little as $150 if paid in by December 1 of their weanling year. At the BFA Futurity, the bonus was $45,000 split between the two qualifying rounds and an average. “Future Fortunes really has something for everyone,” Hickman adds. “We have the slot races for those that like to gamble and don’t mind paying the high entry fees, and we have our regular bonuses with no additional entry fees. We also offer special bonuses to our rookie and amateur competitors, plus the owner, breeder, rider award.” The BFA Future Fortunes Bonus Champion was Famous Kickin Jo, owned by Terrie Van Volkenburg and Joe Trentman and ridden by Troy Crumrine. The 4-year-old solid Paint stallion by Famous Jr is out of the Kickin Country mare Kickin Jo. His total bonus earnings totaled $7,776, plus $864 for sire Famous Jr.

Owner, breeder, rider champion The top Future Fortunes horse competing at the BFA under the saddle of its owner and breeder was Lisa Nicholas’ Firetrain O Toole. The 4-year-old gelding by Flaming Fire Water, out of the Mitey Jody mare Tristen Vixon, earned $1,000. rookie & Amateur champion First-time BFA competitor Sharee Stamper won both the Future Fortunes Amateur and Rookie titles taking home $2,500, plus a saddle, courtesy of JB Quarter Horses, on behalf of Bugs Dun It, a 4-year-old Famous Bugs mare out of Shez Ikes Woman, by Heza Lightning Ike.

Future Fortunes champion Sire & Dam Famous Kickin Jo also helped earn leading Future Fortunes honors for his sire and dam. The late Famous Jr, owned by John Read Foster and Mike and Janelle Green’s Southern Rose Ranch, become the leading Future Fortunes Sire for 2014 with his offspring earning him $2,254 in bonus money. Although Future Fortunes is based on stallion enrollment, the pro-gram has long awarded a leading dam. Kickin Jo, owned by Van Volk-enburg and Trentman, was the leading dam in 2014 with $2,028 won at just three Future Fortunes events. The remaining top 10 dams were Karma Loftin’s Junior Country Girl, Mary Pennington’s Rips Rocket Queen, Freespirit Farms’ In Pursuit Of Passion, Al Child’s Sagebrush Martha, Dorothy Charette’s Pie Sky Promises, Kenny Nichols’ Hum Dot Com, Barbee Beer’s BB Royalty Reigns, Travis and Amy Lantis’ Sun Crusade and Kenny Nichols’ Misty Dash Of Fame.

Future Fortunes champion breeder The 2014 Leading Breeders were Bill and Deb Myers of St. Onge, S.D. The eight foals raised by the couple earned them $2,446 in bonus money from seven events.

Headin’ For Home by Sherry morrison Triple m (mike morrison ministries)

Merry Christmas to you! We are fast approaching the day we celebrate our Savior’s birth. What a great day for us, His kids. He has made everything good possible for us!

And it’s the time of year that we give gifts. It’s a mirror of the Fathers’ gift to us. Your value to God is greater than you may know or think. He sent Jesus for YOU. It’s high time that we quit think-ing less of ourselves or comparing ourselves to anyone else. He came for YOU. That’s a concept that, when we are not at our best, is hard to grasp. After all, I wanted to ram someone in line at Wal-Mart on Black Friday! Surely that will disqualify me. No it won’t! He loves YOU. Let’s get that in the forefront of our thinking these next days, and when the 25th comes, you can say with confidence, GOD LOVES ME ENOUGH TO SEND JESUS! I’M SOME-BODY!

And lastly, a few days ago, God gave me a word for all of us. It is: “2015, better this year than last. White hot on fire. God first!” It got me so excited! I know who holds our future. Jeremiah 29:11 talks of our future. Read it and enjoy! May God bless you and all you set your hands to do! We love you so much and pray the uninterrupted flow of blessings flood your lives like never before!

Mike morrison and his wife Sherry are ordained ministers in their own nondenominational church in Gillette, WY. They also travel widely as circuit riders
