Amber Moore and CP Dark Moon topped the futurity for $1,390 of the $6,975 purse of which $2,000 was added. “Viki Friedrich puts on a great race,” said Moore. “They have a class A facility. The grounds good and the weather was great. It was a fun weekend. My hat’s off to Viki. She put that on that race for all of us and had her trailer packed and ready to go. As soon as that last horse ran, she and her husband were out the door to go to (Ram National) Circuit Finals (in Oklahoma City)—how’s that for dedication. She did that for us and then headed to Oklahoma.” Less than 2/10ths of second separated Moore’s runs aboard the 4-year-old mare she calls Paige. She won the first go in 15.110 and placed second in the second go with a 14.982 to win the average in 30.092. “She makes it easy,” said Moore, who hails from Salem, Ore. “She’s a perfectionist and makes the same run every single time.” Moore, who generally raises and trains her own futurity horses, purchased Paige last May from Cody and Paige Hyde. “It was one of those moments,” she explained. “I raise and train my own, but at that time I was down with nothing to ride, so I went looking for something.” When she purchased Paige, a daughter of Darkelly out of the On A High mare, SRQH New Highs, she hadn’t planned on running her as a 4-year-old. “When my other futurity horse got hurt, I took her and put on the clock to see where she was at and she out ran everybody by 2/10ths doing a time only. Everyone was like “OK…you need to start entering.” That was the first of February.” Her first race was in Walla Walla mid-February. “She’s been consistently in the 1- or 2D every time since then,” she said. “She was in the 2D twice and that’s when she’s tripped. She’s been in the 1D every other time. She just goes out and makes the same run every time. She’s one of those dream horses—one of those that you don’t expect and all of a sudden, she’s there.” Moore grew up riding and competing with her family. In fact, her parents, whom are in their 60s, still ride and compete in the o-mok- cee (gaming) as does her sister and her family. She’s been playing the futurity game for the last 12 years. “I’ve done this my whole life,” said Moore, who makes bling tack as AKM Originals and helps with the family pool and fireplace busi- ness. “I do gaming too. I usually have futurity horses and do that in the spring and then game through the summer.” Next up for Moore is the Sand Cup Futurity in Pasco, Wash., and then the 35th Annual Valley Girls Barrel Daze in Walla Walla. “They got 86 in Pasco and 139 in the futurity at Barrel Daze, and it’s the biggest one ever,” noted Moore. “With $50,000 added, it should be a fun weekend.” SW WA Futurity & Derby March 30-31, 2013, Salkum, WA Average 1D 1 Cp Dark Moon, Amber Moore, 30.092, $489.58 09 br. f. Bid on NFr Saddle for Cancer Treatments Recently, Christy Loflin put her NFR Barrel Saddle, a Molly Pow-ell Barrel Saddle made by Reinsman given to her for qualifying to the 2012 NFR, up at auction to raise money for cancer treatments for Ms. Sadie Coogler. Loflin was moved to donate the saddle after fellow WPRA barrel racer Kendra Dickson shared Sadie’s story. Dickson has been donating 10% of her recent rodeo winnings to Sadie’s cause and helped to get an auction started as well. According to her Facebook page, Prayers For Sadie, eight year old Ms. Sadie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma Malforme on December 20, 2012 and on January 11, 2013 started her 7 week treatment at St. Jude in Memphis, TN. The current bid on the saddle is $5,000, in order to bid or follow Sadie’s progress, go to Ms. Sadie’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/prayersforsadiescarlet, and post your bid. The auction is set to end April 10, 2013. Along with the saddle, there are other auction items such as Chiropractic work by Doug Smith, Cowgirl Tuff clothing, tack sets, and stud fees from French Streaktovegas, Slick By Design and KS Cash N Fame available at http://www.32auctions.com/organizations/6973/auctions/7719. The auctions are set to end 30 days after they are donated so check the auction link for more information.

Extreme retired racehorse Makeover Barrel raceDreaming of Three, purina & Agland’s Event to Show the Versatility of the OTTB On August 2, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. fans of the Off the Track Thoroughbred (OTTB) will have the chance to see live the se-lected horses and trainers for this competition, watch the advanced horsemanship unfold, demos of other successful OTTB’s and enjoy Country Music Singer, Melanie May and The Hillbury’s Band. Dur-ing the 100 days preceding the Event, fans can follow the trainers and horses through the Dreaming of Three website, blog, Social Media, TV, Radio and print. “A dream written down with a date becomes a Goal. A Goal broken down into Steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by Action makes your Dreams come True” ~ Greg S. reid All has come together for the Extreme Retired Racehorse Make-over Barrel Race. Dreaming of Three’s Founder, Jackie Harris, had

a dream of a barrel race to help showcase and retrain OTTB’s, she selected a date, then the goal, steps and plan were put into place. There were so many that shared her dream and many volunteers, family, friends and Team DO3 members have brought the dream to a reality. Over approximately 100 days, the OTTB’s will begin their new careers off the track. They will be retrained by the skilled trainers who were carefully selected for this Event. Part reality tele-vision, part Extreme Mustang Makeover and Steuart Pittman’s suc-cessful 100 Day Challenge, this Event has gained much momentum over the last few months with excited and anxious followers. Jackie consulted with Steuart and many Mustang Makeover contestants to devise this Event. During the Event, the selected judges will judge a fun Freestyle portion. Storme Camarillo will represent the Barrel Racing Indus-try, Haley Goodwill will represent the Eventing Industry and Patrick King will represent the Natural Horsemanship Industry. Each of the trainers will complete some basic maneuvers during their freestyle portion. Patrick King said, “This is sure to be a fantastic event that will not only represent the talent of the trainers involved, but also the cross-trainability of these wonderful horses in prepara-tion for a new career. I am excited to be a part of this great event and look forward to seeing the high quality of horsemanship that the competitors are sure to bring to the arena.” The applications were received from states all across the U.S. Many trainers wanted to help showcase the versatility of OTTB, not because they thought someone’s watching, but to help a great cause. “I am so excited! 100 days of hard work ahead. I am so ready to showcase the OTTB’s with their amazing talent off the track. I am honored to be a part of this challenge”, comments Tara Jones one of the selected trainers from Telford, Pa. Dreaming of Three is extremely excited to have the support of Purina Horse Feeds & Agland Co-op along with all the other wonderful sponsors that want to help showcase the versatility of the retired racehorse. The proceeds from this Event will benefit CANTER and Bright Futures Farm, both OTTB Rescues. You can read more about the selected trainers at www.dreamingofthree.com.

Barrel Racing Report  April 2, 2013  Page 15

by Jill Moody The basic nature of a human being often leads us to treat our animals as if they were humans; a behavior known as anthropo-morphism. Anyone who knows me knows that I have ill mannered, spoiled dogs but I love them unconditionally. I struggle with train-ing my dogs because I don’t really understand the basic nature of a dog. I know enough for myself and my dogs and to get by but they can be a handful and difficult to control, and rather than pursue higher education on dog training I have chosen to deal with them Many people have that same struggle with their horses. Most of my horsey friends spend their allotted horse time fielding cell phone calls, yelling at their kids, chasing their dogs, and dealing with their horses; not necessarily in that order. Even though they would like to “live in the moment” with their horse, that block of time is usu-ally entangled with life’s responsibilities and the moment becomes blurred. In order to truly bond with and train a horse people need to understand the basic nature of a horse. Horses are herd animals and find safety in numbers and they have flight or fight survival in-stincts. They acquire behaviors through a combination of innate or instinctive behavior and learned behavior which they attain by relief from an annoyance or release of a pressure, and they react to what is happening in that moment. How does a horse know that if he gets close enough to that tree in the lower pasture he can fuss around it long enough to get you to fall off ? He learned to do that one baby step at a time. Maybe the tree is close to the trail and you rode by it one day, caught your toe knock-ing you off balance causing you to lose the death grip you had on your reins thus releasing the pressure on your horse’s mouth. Ride the same trail day after day, by that same tree day after day, catch your toe a few more times, lose your balance, release the reins and the repetition is training your horse to go close to that tree. Accidently catch your toe hard enough to cause you to fall off al-lowing your horse run back to barn which is a huge relief from an annoyance (you!) and the “rubbing you off at the tree” training has begun. He learns the exact behavior needed by how your body reacts and the pressures you apply and release as he gets close to the tree.

He doesn’t stand around his pen planning that move like someone plans a jail escape. The time in his pen or pasture is spent interact-ing with herd mates, eating, dozing, seeking shelter or shade, or avoiding biting insects or a cold wind. If there is an annoyance or pressure; he is seeking relief from it but the relief or release has to come almost instantaneously in order for him to learn from it. Feeding your horse a treat at the trailer doesn’t reward a good run. More often than not it teaches him to be impatient and nip because you are rewarding the pushiness to avoid the nip. Who is doing the training now? It is advisable to have a working knowledge of the basic nature of the horse in order to develop a relationship that keeps you and your horse sane. Knowing that horses can have troublesome learned behaviors but don’t have the capacity to plot and plan as we know it is one step toward understanding how an-thropomorphic human behavior is counterproductive when we are working with our horses. Turn off your cell phones, treat your kids like kids, dogs like dogs, and deal with your horse like a horse and everyone will be much happier “living in the moment”. Disclaimer: In the elapsed time since I wrote this piece I have managed to train one of my horses to stop and kick up like a spoiled pony whenever I put “move over” leg pressure on her. The discussion that I had with her was obviously too much human and not enough horse. Now I have to figure out how to undo what I shouldn’t have done in the first place. And I thought I knew a thing or two about training horses. I would tell myself not to quit my day job but since my day job, my night job and my weekend job all involve horses maybe I need to rethink my choice of careers! Well, maybe not… then I would have to get a real job!

by Julie Mankin Winter’s over. Done. So as the spring rodeo season hits the West Coast and people begin starting afresh at Guymon or Reno, here’s how it all shakes out. Here’s a shocker – only 1 barrel racer, Fallon Taylor, has earned more dollars in 2013 than the defending world champion. Mary Walker and Perculatin (“Latte”) have simply kept up the momentum that started last summer and freight-trained them through the NFR. The only major rodeo that didn’t pay Walker was Fort Worth. She only had a couple of thousand dollars won before the first of the year, so Walker’s big win at San Angelo ($14,592) – coupled with placing everywhere else – made her this winter’s darling. Fallon Taylor and Flo’s Heiress (“Baby Flo”), too, have had a great winter. Starting with a lead of almost ten thousand dollars from last fall, she’s stayed right with Walker atop the standings courtesy of winning Odessa ($4,848) and scoring big at Denver ($3,473), Tucson ($4,654) and Austin ($3,496). Despite Walker’s and Taylor’s success, the biggest splash this winter was arguably made

Winter rodeo roundup Continued From page 17by Jane Melby, who ran down the alley last summer on a big black horse that most people assumed was her mare, RC Back In Black (on whom she earned more than $122,000 and three NFR go-rounds in 2011). Nope, color is all that First Down Perk has in common with “Beauty,” who is now simply making embryos after injuries last summer ended her career in the arena. Melby bought the new black superstar, 12-year-old “Blackie,” in May from Oklahoma’s Kari Dawn Johnson, who raised and trained him. He’s by First Down Expected – a maternal grandson of the thoroughbred Disco Jerry crossed on an Oklahoma Fuel daughter, with First Down Dash on top. And he’s out of the Dash For Perks daughter Perking Cash, who is Dash For Cash and Go Man Go on the bottom. She has a little thoroughbred blood of her own via the Bold Ruler son Master Hand. Armed with a nice break last fall and a couple of good backups, Melby is on a mission to match Taylor’s. She jumped out and won Denver ($10,676) and grabbed an even bigger check at Fort Worth ($11,390) to firmly launch herself into the top of the leader board. Here are this winter’s number-one winners at individual rodeos:Odessa – Fallon Taylor and Kenna Squires, $4,848 eachDenver – Jane Melby, $10,676Fort Worth – Taylor Jacob, $14,796Tucson – Cindy Smith, $6,735San Angelo – Mary Walker, $14,592San Antonio – Shada Brazile, $16,866Rapid City – Britany Fleck, $4,850Austin – Carlee Pierce, $8,783Houston – Nancy Hunter, $53,000 In fact, the leader board as of April 2 looks a lot different than it did on April 2, 2012. This year, leaders Taylor and Walker have earned $35,569 and $33,984, respectively. Last year on this day, Car-lee Pierce and Brittany Pozzi had earned $68,045 and $64,641. What gives? Well, Houston was sanctioned by the WPRA last year and it is

not sanctioned in 2013, for one thing. While most of us think of Houston as just giving one gal a big leg up in the standings (think Lindsay Sears last year), that rodeo actually was lucrative for many, many cowgirls. In 2012, Houston paid nearly $60,000 to Sears, but it also wrote hefty checks to Carlee Pierce ($27,200), Trula Churchill ($11,950), Sherry Cervi ($10,800), Brittany Pozzi ($10,400) and Bennette Little ($9,350). Without Houston last year, Churchill wouldn’t have made the NFR. Little would only have made it by the hair on her chin. Sears would have made it in ninth place instead of second, and Pierce would have finished sixth in the world instead of second. Hypothetically. So what do this spring’s world standings mean for NFR hopefuls this year? Well, last year, the spring standings were led by Pierce with $68,045. She was followed by Pozzi with $64,641 and Sears with $60,328 (almost all from Houston). Heading into the NFR, Pierce had fallen a few holes, but Pozzi and Sears entered the Finals in first and second with $170,967 and $136,322, respectively. Then it was Walker slipping in with $127,296 and Pierce with $122,416 to round out the gold-buckle contenders. A year ago, Sherry Cervi was nowhere to be found in the leader board. She had earned just $17,538 in April, last year, but finished fifth in the world. On the other hand, Sammi Bessert was looking good at seventh place a year ago with $22,876 earned, but couldn’t stay in the top 15. Others who were sitting pretty in April but failed to make the December cut were Shelley Morgan and Angie Me-adors. Nikki Steffes knew how to maintain; she was sixth in April 2012 and sixth when the NFR wrapped up. Even without counting Houston money last year, three of the top four in April 2012 had earned significantly more than the gals at the top this year. Shoot, Pozzi and Sears have barely earned $13,000 this season. What does that mean? Are there more good horses spread-ing the wealth around? Is it possible that it won’t take $55,000 to make the Finals like it did last year?

Winter rodeo roundup From page 17 Here’s a staggering thought – Mary Walker has already won more than twice what she had earned last year at this time. That means she could have a shot at Sears’ 2008 regular-season earnings record ($184,567). Meanwhile, the stalwarts are sitting pretty – Lisa Lockhart knows where to be ranked in April. Today, she’s fourth with $27,124. Last year on this day she was fifth with $27,619. Pierce, too, is on pace to go back to the Finals, along with Cervi, Walker and Melby. Basically, the top six in April last year made the NFR. That’s likely to happen again. The newest faces this winter have to be excited. Taylor Jacob (the college-girl rookie on her Frenchmans Guy grandson) and Natalie Foutch (the Midwest wife and mother on the VF Moon Fire geld-ing) are almost halfway to their first NFRs in earnings with $25,522

and $22,333, respectively – most of it courtesy of Fort Worth. Incidentally, both of their horses run to the left first. The other big splashes this winter were made by Sabrina Ket-cham (on her 11 year old Dash Ta Fame gelding Swivel Ta Fame) and Shada Brazile (on her Dashin Is Easy 7-year-old gelding Dial It Fast) with $22,087 and $21,953 earned, respectively. They’ll have to fend off advances from veterans at places like Guymon, where Cervi and Walker went one-two last year. And Reno has always been a good pen for Nancy Hunter, but alas, her $53,000 from Houston doesn’t count. On the other hand, the big wrench in the standings this year will come from Calgary, where Carlee Pierce and Lindsay Sears are tough to beat. Game on!

Headin’ For Home by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

No one would take a green, untrained horse to a competition and then be mad because the horse didn’t excel. Yet, some people do that with their prayers.

There was this old rancher I heard about whose daughter was dying of cancer. When he was told there was nothing more the medical profession could do for her and he should pray, he became very irate. “I tried that once and it didn’t work,” he shot back. Don’t give up too soon! Charles Finney, the well-known evange-list who caused great revivals of faith around the world has words of wisdom which apply today as well as they did years ago. He said God will grant answers to prayers when prayer is persistent. Finney also said, “You must persevere. You are not to pray for a thing once, then cease, and call that a prayer of faith. Look at Dan-iel. He prayed twenty-one days and did not stop until he obtained the blessing. He set his heart and face forward the Lord to seek an answer by prayer and supplication. He held on three weeks and then the answer came.”

Examine the Bible and you will see that God’s promises mean just what they say. God is always good and He never lies. He will do what He says. Have patience and believe that He is working things out better than you can imagine. Romans 8:28 tells us that we know all things work together for the good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Trust God. Pray and believe and the peace of God will come to you!
