Turf Talk
September is finally here! This is when the golf course management calendar begins. During the week of September 9th, we will be aerifiying the greens which is the process that initiates the root development cycle of most putting greens in the Midwest. It allows much needed oxygen to enter the root zone while allowing us to incorporate new loose sand within the soil profile. This loose sand is applied by sweeping a heavy topdressing layer into each hole created by our aerify machine. The loose material relieves compaction and allows a new channel into which the roots can grow. After this process is complete, we work hard over the next 6 months to prepare our root system for next summer’s stress. We will also be seeding the rough starting this month. We have 2,000 lbs. of seed ordered to help fill in any thin or imperfect areas in the rough. With favorable rain events, the seed will emerge and mature by the time we apply weed control products later in the fall. It is critical for the young seedlings to mature before applying these products to lower the risk of damage to the young plants. The plan for this fall is to spend time with old irrigation heads that need to be leveled and raised up for maximum performance. We also plan to try and sod all of our bare areas around the property. There is a hole left of #14 and right of #17 that will be addressed as well.I want to publicly thank my all-star staff for the efforts they put forth each and every day. They consistently work hard to make ECC a better place to play the game of golf. They realize that their work is experienced each time you play a round here. I would like to finish by reminding you of the ECC Turf Care twitter account which is @ECCSuper77. This twitter account will allow you to be up close and personal to some of the happenings we execute on a daily basis. This is just another way for you to learn and be aware of what we are doing to the golf course. Respectfully,Jeff Sexton, CGCS
The parking lot is brighter with the installation of the new energy saving lights. Fixtures at the tennis courts were upgraded as well. The Board of Directors approved the purchase and we’ve already received a rebate from Vectren. With this rebate, pay back on the new lights will be less than three years. This is a huge savings for the club and a tremendous improvement in helping you find your car at night.
The Entertainment Committee has a busy agenda this fall starting with our annual Car Show on Labor Day paired with our family friendly picnic buffet. Next is our big wine tasting on Friday, Sept 6. Jeremy will have 50+ wines and select spirits for you to sample. Sat, Sept 14 is Dog Day at the pool. Bring your dog out for a swim before we drain the water. Finally, Dinner on the Greens will take place Friday, Sept 20. We will have a multi-course dinner prepared on-site by Chef Kyle at 12 tee. The event includes a full open bar, live music and valet parking for your golf cart. This one of a kind experience will sell out so please make reservations early. Reminder, social members are welcome too!
Our Membership drive has surpassed all expectations with over 90 new members this year. Thanks to this influx we have seen revenue increase in all areas of the club. The most obvious increase can be observed in the Grill as our lunch crowd has doubled. Thanks to the expertise of our new Sous Chef, Jacob Billings has managed to thrill our diners with shorter wait times and outstanding soups and lunch specials. With all the new diners, we ask that you please make reservations so we can have your table ready upon arrival.
Jeff and his crew out did themselves with the recent improvements on 15 tee. The landscaping is awesome and the custom stone makes a grand statement. The project was complete with new irrigation, drain lines and the addition of new cart path towards the ladies tee. With fall approaching, now is the best time to bring out guests and show off our beautiful golf course.
