to save the day; a Russian (moon-walking) sea witch and a serpentine (cheesy) medusa bring terror to the proceedings; the D’Splashian family bring their own take on mermaid speak/bling; the all-male Ozzy synchro swimming team pop up with a medal-winning (?) routine; a monkey got tickled and the scheming princess tries (unsuccessfully) to get her hands on the treasure. Of course all’s well that ends well, and our hero Sinbad declares his love for his true sweetheart a la Danny Zuko!

The panto itself was a triumph, with so many stand-out performances – we salute you all. The set was amazing – how on earth so much is achieved in such a small space is beyond us. So take a bow Uncle Ron, Ray Elger and your talented team of set designers and artists – it really was fantastic. The same goes for Elspeth Ferriday – your musical direction coupled with your talented musicians and choir took the production to a higher level. And finally to you Lisa Harvey – great job on the choreography, made all the more impressive by your having a big part in the panto as well. To say that Mandy pushes boundaries would be an understatement. Inclusivity and community always take centre stage in her productions – add to this her brilliantly crafted script and the technical wizardry of Rich and his talented protégés and it becomes obvious why every production is a winner. Thank you so much Mandy – it’s been said before but you really are the engine that makes this and so many other things in our village happen.

Whether you are cast or crew we know how tirelessly you all worked to put on these events, which bring so much pleasure to our community – thank you – every single one of you!

Roy’s ramblingsI see from the Parish Notes that somebody took down the notices put up by Blenheim. These people do not know the history of the ditches – I don’t know just where they were – but like it or not it is the palace’s land.

Way back we were having a lot of rain, in fact you would think it a rare happening. I took my old JCB and cleared the ditch down the track or lane that runs up along the playing field, down to the corner.

The ditch that runs along the playing filed hedge was just about nonexistent, so I cleared a hole through what there was of the hedge and dug a trench through to the remains of the old gravel pit. I went through the gateway into the allotments and cleaned the pit out, which rapidly filled up. This saved Elms Road from flooding. The ditch that runs between Elms Road and the allotments must be kept an eye on, and the pit, so you are entirely in the palace’s hands. They have been very helpful to date; if the folk who took the notices down went with tools and cleared the ditch at the back of the houses it would make more sense!

Having just found a file with the history of ditches, which I will give to the parish council, also I had forgotten that I had got permission to dig a ditch across the top of the playing field. This stopped the water running off the field above, across the playing field and straight down Elms Road. Thanks to Mr Henman for cleaning it out. He did a good job trimming the hedge, until some clever person had a go at him for not picking up the bits that fell into the playing field. You now have the problem yourselves.

Since I stopped driving I find it difficult having to rely on other people. People do help out, thank you all. The Church congregation is still struggling. I read in the paper that believers are vanishing. Unfortunately I remember churches with more people in them, when the country was at war, when there was nowhere else to turn to. God will still help you if you give him a chance June have found this since our troubles began.

One further item – the A40. Over the past 30–40 years I have seen all sorts of suggestions, properties purchased, etc, to put in a dual carriageway only for them to be abandoned. When the surveyor was measuring up to draw the plans I had an interesting chat with him. I said, “Good, we may get it done in five years.” He said, “I doubt it. Usually when they get round to doing the job it is out of date. That’s the ministry of transport.”

June and I were on our way back from church and noticed a company strengthening the river bridge. We walked along and had a look. The gent in charge said, “Mind the crane.” We said, “Thank you. Now you have the equipment here are you going to get ready for the dual carriageway?” The man said, “Don’t be silly – the ministry does not think ahead like that.” I then said “Do you realise the bridge was built away from the river but wants to be over it?” They said, “It will be. We will put the river under it, when it is done.” When I took over the bit of ground by the river there was a big row of very big willows all along the river bank.

I must now close or the editor may not put my ramblings in.

Desert Island DiscsLast month’s castaway was Wayne Tilling, the village postman, correctly guessed first by Stephen Petty. Here’s our January castaway – who do you think it is?Oh my goodness, what a chore! Trying to get my long list of favourite songs down to just eight. I initially had 28! Anyway, I did whittle them down and here they are. If there are some you don’t know, I urge you to look them up and have a listen: you might discover a new favourite.

1. Baby It’s You – The Beatles. In my teens, I’d break from listening to the likes of Depeche

Mode and Duran Duran and spend weekends going through my dad’s record collection, the majority of which was Beatles LPs and 45s. My dad’s claim to fame was that he saw them once, when they played a small gig in Oxford.

He didn’t actually get a ticket, so he scaled the walls and watched through a window! I could’ve

chosen any if their songs, but I particularly like this seldom-heard album track. 2. Broken – Jake Bugg. Just the most beautiful melody – it moves me to tears.3. Dakota – Stereophonics. This song was being played on the radio when I, my husband and our two young children were moving into our cottage. It reminds me of the excitement we felt at the start of a new chapter in our lives, combined with the nervousness of trying to meet new friends and fit into a new community. Little did we know what a warm, welcoming place we were moving. Ten years on, we’ve doubled both our house and family and couldn’t be happier.4. Starlight – Muse. Muse have to be one of the most exciting bands to see live. Pyrotechnics and dramatic music: a heady

combination.5. Sex On Fire – Kings of Leon. Popular rock

is my favourite music genre and this song in particular is guaranteed to get me on the dance floor.6. Super Trouper – ABBA. I LOVE ABBA,

every single song of theirs (except ‘Thank you for the Music’ – too cheesy). Dancing Queen is

actually my absolute favourite, but I’ve chosen Super Trouper because it reminds me of my wonderful 40th birthday party in Cornwall, when my mum and two aunties dressed up in flares and silver-sprayed crocs (!?) and performed this song as ‘Cazza and the Cassettes.’ It was wonderful!7. I’ve Been Loving You Too Long – Otis Redding. Just a beautiful song that sums up how I feel about my husband. Otis Redding has the most fantastic voice. It gives me shivers when he slides up those notes. So sad his life was cut short, but what a legacy he left.8. One Day Like This – Elbow. I love the beautiful orchestration on this track, and it brings back wonderful memories of being at Glastonbury with my husband. Picture this: The Pyramid stage flooded in early evening sunlight, the

lead singer, Guy Garvey stood in muddy wellies, beer in hand, listening to the thronging thousands sing at the top of their voices: “Throw those curtains wide/One day like this a year would see me right”. Electric! The book I’ve chosen is Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier. It has it all:

romance, intrigue, murder and

Cassington WIJane Cook, our president, welcomed us all, including June Partridge, whose son had kindly  driven her over to Burleigh Farm for our Christmas Gathering. Firstly, The Minutes from the previous meeting were read. Megan Humphris

suggested that we reintroduced asking the British Legion to make us a wreath for the Remembrance Sunday Service. We all agreed and decided we would order now so as to be in plenty of time for next November. We talked about a visit next year to Chedworth Roman Villa and will discuss this again later.

After our meeting we enjoyed mulled wine and Christmas food while members read a sketch, poems and extracts from Christmas books. Jane read us an entry from her diary about when she and Michael first came to live on the farm and the children were young … such a different life! Finally we had a Christmas quiz before gathering our things and making for home. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Cassington.

Our next meeting is on 21st January 2016 and the talk is by Russell Cherry: ‘The Thames from its source – a journey through history.

Time to test those new year resolutionsApparently gym subscriptions peak at the beginning of each new year. People have good intentions and make a good start, but then fade away.

As I write, an agreement between 195 countries has been made to cut greenhouse emissions and hold the advancing global rise in temperature to 1.5oC, and so slow the pace of climate change.

There are plenty of good intentions in this ‘resolution’, for the new year and beyond, but how will this work out in the cold light of day? Leaders of the nations will have to sell this resolution to their countrymen and women, many of whom will have more parochial agendas and priorities. Also, in democratic countries leaders have to consider their electoral support.

I do sincerely hope and pray that this resolution of the nations will have a more lasting effect than many of our personal ones. What is at stake here is not just a personal additional few pounds but the very future of the planet with increased ‘natural’ disasters, famines, floods, mass migrations and international conflicts. The very futures of our children, grandchildren and generations to come are at stake.

In the story of Genesis God placed the first humans in charge of this Earth as stewards of the natural world. But, you may say, “What can I do? What difference can I make?” The task may seem too big for us as individuals.

It starts with an attitude of mind. I recently heard of a man who lost an incredible 17 stone in weight. The seemingly impossible can be done! Each day we must make small environmental choices to do those things to help this global resolution. For example, simply avoiding less food waste and making sure we put waste food in the food bin is just one small way to help. However, to make bigger changes we must campaign, we must also convince, coax, petition and encourage our political, industrial, and financial leaders to keep the issue high on the political agenda both here and abroad.

Accepting that we all mess up is a central Christian doctrine. So let’s admit that we have got things wrong in our past stewardship of God’s beautiful world and move on, maintaining our resolution to put things right.

Wishing you a happy and determined new year.Rev’d Roger Aston

Teenage angstThe turn of the year provides ample opportunity for teenage angst. First of all there’s Christmas, a blissful time of year that brings everyone together, including the people you love most, and the people who give you knitwear as presents. Christmas is, however, generally a good thing. My cynicism does struggle to overcome the power of Christmas so therefore my angst is limited. People are just too happy around the festive period – and why not as Christmas’s biggest ploy is its ability to allow people to forget about the horror that awaits them. Christmas for me is the happy, the warm, the exciting pigs in blankets hors d’oeuvres, before the big old (vegan side of the family’s) ‘mock turkey and lentil’ disappointment that is the New Year! January the first is the annual time in which I ask myself two painfully important questions. The first: what have I actually achieved in the last year? The second: what am I actually going to achieve this year? The latter question used to end on a rather optimistic note, however having learnt over time that the answer to my first question was consistently barren, I learnt to curb my enthusiasm.

‘New year, same me’ is a philosophy that is yet to grow old. This outlook has proved viable thus far, and despite the angst that falling short on the answers to life’s big questions brings me, I remain unscathed so far. However, with every year seeming more important, more challenging and generally more of a pain to get through, it would seem that my naive ‘everything will work out fine’ attitude comes under scrutiny. I’m 18 this year! As of August I’m an adult! It’s facts like these, paired with the thoughts and realities that I realise from such facts, that make me dislike post Christmas. As I have said I love Christmas but all that follows until it goes full circle again leaves me scared and sceptical. It seems true that the older I get the worse things become, something that I have been told so many times in my youth but never

properly believed. My angst lies solely in the fear of another

year of blindness as I sail through 2016 to get to January the first 2017 and realise that

I’ve wasted another year. To put it simply I’m writing this in

2015 about my fear of what 2016 holds, despite being in the knowledge that I won’t actually think about the repercussions of 2016

until 2017! To conclude, I hope all of you enjoyed your Christmas and that your New Years are filled with much joy and boundless

happiness because there’s always next year to actually deal

with it! On my Christmas list was simply ‘let tomorrow never

come” and to 2016 I say the same. If you’re reading this article then assume that

I must’ve been on the naughty list.Ben Copelin

Cassington Parochial CharitiesFollowing the resignation of two long serving Trustees of the Parochial Charities it is necessary for the Parish Council to nominate two new Trustees in their place. One to act until 14th July 2019 and the other to act until 14th July 2017. The trustees meet twice a year and are responsible for the management of the four Almshouse flats and garden near to the Church and two pieces of farm land – one in Cassington and the other in Freeland.

Anyone interested in becoming involved with this ancient Charity should please apply to David Casey the Clerk to the Parish Council ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

If further particulars are required please contact Mike Linnell – Chairman of the Trustees (01865 881330 [email protected]).

Reciprocate – business/charity linkup Oxfordshire Community Foundation (OCF) has just launched a new responsible business group, Reciprocate, which will help the local business community become more strategic

in its thinking about community engagement, and realise its good intentions through the power of many.

Over the past few months, a group of local businesses has been in discussions with former High Sheriff Tony Stratton and OCF, reflecting on how they might create a network of businesses in Oxfordshire that espouse responsibility. The evidence from focus groups held by OCF and the recently published Oxford Times ‘Business Barometer’ suggests that many firms in Oxfordshire are keen to make a greater contribution to local communities, but encounter several problems including deciding which of the many charities they are approached by they should help and knowing how to go about offering volunteering support.

The new group aims to help companies realise their good intentions, but with minimum hassle and at manageable cost. Reciprocate already has a strong base of Founder Members, a Steering Group of local business leaders and the encouragement and support of a number of county organisations and institutions.

Reciprocate will give members the opportunity to learn from others through shared experience; an up-to-date source of information and reference to assist CSR decision making; collaborative projects; pooled resources and ideas; and the ability to pass charitable requests to others – enabling them to say a ‘positive no’ to requests they just can’t deal with alone.

Following a six-month trial period, membership will be £350 per annum, with a cap at 100 businesses for the first year. Companies interested in becoming a member should email [email protected].

Thanks to all who donated shoe boxes this year. 3,298 boxes left Witney Methodist Church on 24th November, bound for children in Ukraine.

The Funding NetworkCrowdfunding initiative The Funding Network will be holding its next event in Oxford on 5th May 2016, and is now looking for nominations for local charitable projects to pitch for £4,000 in funding to an audience of donors.

Looking for a better way to discover and support transformational local projects? Interested to find out more about live crowdfunding? The Funding Network (TFN) allows you to experience the thrill of live crowdfunding – and do more with your money than you ever could alone. Come face to face with extraordinary people working on the front lines of social change and discover imaginative solutions to the pressing problems in our world today. On the night you’ll have the opportunity to hear from four local innovative projects, ask questions, then decide to support them if you wish. There is no obligation to give. Tickets are £5 (includes refreshments and a glass of wine) and are available now.

The organisers are now seeking nominations for projects to pitch at this event, so if you know of any inspirational projects please do consider putting them forward. The application form can be downloaded from http://tinyurl.com/htzjzma and must be returned to Sue Raikes at The Funding Network by 5pm on Monday 22nd February 2016 (contact details are on the form). All projects will need a sponsor who is prepared to vouch for their work and who must pledge the first £250; before making any application please read the Funding Network Guidance 2016 for full details.

TFN is also particularly keen to continue its links with the student population. Oxford students have a thriving curiosity and this is an important time where they form views that influence decisions throughout their lives. TFN wants to support students to get engaged in philanthropy – a worthwhile long term investment for us all. If you are a student who’d like to learn more, or are interested in supporting this initiative, get in touch with Sue Raikes at [email protected].

CONFESSIONS on Saturdays at 7pm and Wednesdays at 10.30am or by appointment.

THE CHURCH is open for prayer every day. (address below)

THE HALL (The Tolkien Room) is available for hire. Tel: 07919 605544; [email protected].

THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY is the day when we celebrate the coming of the Wise Men which, strictly speaking, is a separate festival from Christmas. We will be celebrating it on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd January and throughout the week that follows. The shepherds disappear from our crib, and it becomes a house, not a stable, with the three Wise Men visiting with their gifts.

THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY begins on 18th January. In Eynsham and Cassington the different churches will host a lunch time of prayer. Our day is Tuesday 19th January from 12 noon for an hour.

OUR CHILDREN PREPARING FOR THEIR FIRST COMMUNION meet next on Saturday 23rd January at 4.30pm when they will learn about Baptism and look at the Church Baptism Register where some of them will find their names. The following day they will come forward with their parents to commit themselves fully to the process which will end with a very happy day on 3rd July!

SURVIVE-MIVA is a great charity that provided various forms of transport – cars, motorbikes, bikes and even boats – to poor Catholic parishes all over the world. We are looking forward to a speaker telling us more about this on Sunday 31st January at our 10am Mass

WE HAVE NOW BEGUN THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY. Pope Francis hopes we will all make our Confession at some time, possibly associated with visiting and passing through a Holy Door. One of these will be at the Oratory Church of St Aloysius in Oxford. We are also asked to think of one thing we can do to offer mercy and support to others.

St Peter’s Church of England Primary School and Nursery

December was especially busy for St Peter’s as you can see!

ST PETEr’S School choirThe first of the events for our school choir was the Big Christmas Sing, which took place in Oxford Town Hall at the beginning of December. The event is open to any primary school in Oxfordshire and we were chosen to be one of the 20 schools performing over two evenings. The choir sung a solo item, joined in with the other choirs to sing a medley of Christmas Songs and supported the audience in the singing of traditional carols. The choir enjoyed the evening and it was a bonus that between our rehearsal and performance we managed to squeeze in a visit to Oxford Central Library and see the Christmas lights. The choir also sang at Cassington Café and paid a visit to Longlands to sing to the residents.

chriSTmaS FayrEThe annual event went with a swing. We were pleased to receive many generous donations from businesses for our raffle. There was hot soup, mulled wine and mince pies to eat, entertainment for the children in the form of games made by Willow Class and a visit from Father Christmas. There were craft stalls, craft making activities and a popular tombola to name a few. We were very pleased to raise around £1200. Thank you if you supported us.

Viking ViSiT To WilloW claSS In the midst of all of the Christmas activities it is worth mentioning that the children were hard at work as well! On 26th November 2015, Willow Class had a Viking visitor (not a real Viking of course) who came and discussed, and re-enacted what it would be like to be a Viking warrior. We also learned about Viking religion. He was with us all day and taught us lots of new bits and pieces about Vikings. We help many objects to do with the Viking armour and blew horns, flung slings and many many more activities. He lit a fire outside and put his hand on it to put the fire out; he said that is what Vikings did. Finally, can we say a big thank you to the Viking actor and Mr Long and Mrs Edwards for helping out on Thursday.

naTional SPacE cEnTrE ViSiTOn 8th December, Willow Class had about a two and half hour journey to Leicester to go to the National Space Centre Museum. It was AMAZING! We went into the planetarium, up a full height rocket and had an hour long tour of the planets, sun and moon. (Report from: Seren Bowers & Anya Edwards; and thank you to the SPSA for supplementing this.)

oak naTiViTyThe children in Oak Class, who are between 5 and 7 years old, put on a nativity play called The Landlord’s Cat. The traditional Christmas Nativity story was retold through the eyes of the Inn Keeper’s cat, who watches the events take place in the stable. The play was a great success due to the hard work of not only the children but staff as well.

aPPlE TrEE PErFormancEOur very youngest children also had the chance to shine as they sang songs about a star and its Christmas journey. It was delightful, with enthusiastic singing and every child on the stage a star.

WholE School TriP To ThE PanTo in oxFord Thank you to the SPSA for their generous donation which enabled us to have a fantastic time at the Panto, here are some of the comments: Apple Tree Class ~ “I liked the marry bit because it was so pretty”; “I liked Aladdin dancing”; “It was good, the people were funny”. Oak Class ~ “I liked the bad character best of all. I like the end when we all got up and danced. I liked the genie that came out of the lamp – ‘What do you want?’ I loved the magic carpet!”Maple Class ~ “The Aladdin play was fabulous it was very funny! We really appreciate you helping us.”Willow Class ~ “we really enjoyed the trip to the Panto – especially when Harry was chosen to go on stage and answer questions.”

ParTy dayThis year’s Christmas party consisted of traditional party games, a slap up Christmas dinner cooked by our chef and a movie afternoon. From the excited happy sounds from around the school everyone had a brilliant time.

chriSTinglEGovernors and members of St Peter’s Church made 100 Christingles for our end of term service, which were then distributed during the service. It was a lovely end to what has been a busy, productive term.

ST PETEr’S nurSEry uniTPlaces are available within our Nursery, where we provide education and care for children between the ages of two and five. The fantastically resourced unit includes a generous outside area and a quiet room. Our highly qualified and experienced staff are all committed to providing the highest quality education and care. Funded places are available. For further information or to arrange a visit please get in touch with the school office (details above).
