Messenger Pastor Al’s Message
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) Last month, I shared that the focus of our synod vision plan for this coming year is: We Are Church Together. Today at staff meeting, Emily and I talked about how inspiring thoughts have a way of showing up again and again in our experiences, conversation and many other ways in our day to day lives. For me, one aspect of this theme, We Are Church Together, keeps bubbling up in my life. When we hear that phrase, We Are Church Together, I think we can hear it in at least a few different ways. One way that we might hear it, that really isn’t helpful at all, is that we can understand that phrase to mean that “we”, inside of the church, are together; which inherently means that there are “others”, outside of the church, with which we are not together. Another way to hear this theme though is that, because we are church - fed, loved, claimed, secured, we are also set free to see all people as sisters and brothers… all of us – together. I think of the blessing of Abraham and Sarah. They are blessed, so that, they and their family will be a blessing to all the nations of the world. Yes, they are set apart, but not above anyone. They are set apart and blessed, so that, they are more able to see all people as sisters and brothers – together! As we come into the Christmas season, I would like to recount a story that I heard a few years ago at our annual Nebraska Synod Theological Conference. Our keynote speak-er, Shane Claiborne, encouraged us to consider how we will both receive and reflect Je-sus’ presence; a very fitting focus for this season. The story has to do with an after school ministry in which Shane and some of his friends are involved and provide a number of activities. One particular day, a young boy came and shared that it was his birthday, but he didn’t share that news with the enthusiasm that you might expect from a child on his special day. Shane shared that this boy proba-bly realized that this day would be no different from any other and that he wouldn’t be receiving any gifts. Shane, who seeks to live a very simplified lifestyle, didn’t have much, but he thought that he wanted to give the boy something. So, he got him an ice cream cone. Shane said that he didn’t know how long it had been since the boy had ice cream, but it must have been quite some time because this boy literal-ly trembled with excitement as he held the cone. Amazingly, the first words out of his mouth were, “WE have ice cream.” He had all of the other kids line up so that they all could get a lick.

Pastor’s Message continued from page 1 I believe that this little boy understood the joy of living gratefully and generously. Somehow he was able to follow Paul’s call to the Romans to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.” (Romans 12:2) Instead of hiding and devouring the ice cream, this boy’s first instinct was to share, and he would always have the memory of an amazing, joy-filled birthday because of it. Inherently, when he received the gift, he saw himself as one who was connected; together, with all the other children. So, the thought never even crossed his mind not to share, and he and all the children were blessed… together.
As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, may we remember Jesus’ life as well. May we, like that little boy, find ways to experience the pure joy of caring for all who are in need; because we know, that to which Jesus’ birth and whole life witness; that we are all in this journey… together.
May we be moved to truly show love to those for whom we care and have our eyes opened to see those that we do not know well; those who are very different from us. May we be open to the opportunities to use our resources for those who have little.
Merry Christmas… and may Jesus’ presence dwell deeply in us and be seen through us.
One worship on Sunday,
December 23 at 10:00am.
Christmas Eve worship at
4:00pm and 8:00pm.
