In this edition of Simulator WORLD we participate in the (virtu-al) opening of the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport In the real world plagued by delays and scandal this sensational airport is now open in the world for Flight Simulator X and available for virtual pilots

In Train Simulator 2014 we went on a trip along the New York to New Haven Route Including the Amtrack HHP-8 locomotive Finally we have checked out the Dispolok BR 189

Metro-North Kawasaki M8 EMU Add-On

One of the newest electric multiple units for the Northeast Corridor comes to Train Simulator in Me-tro-Northrsquos familiar bare metal and red livery The two-car Kawasaki M8 has a top speed of 100mph (161kmh) and the model for Train Simulator features driving cabs and passenger views switchable power modes and dynamic in-cab display screens showing instrument readouts and power pick-up mode The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible giving you the freedom to drive the Metro-North Kawasaki M8 on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator such as those available through Steam Also included are scenarios specifically for the NEC New York-New Haven route

Mega Airport Berlin-BrandenburgAirport Berlin-Brandenburg is readyGermans are certainly known for their efficiency and for their love of detail If you have ever driven a German car or worked with a German company you know what I am on about

When the German government decided to build a brand new airport for its capital Berlin it seemed cer-tain that this would be a showcase of modern tech-nology and stunning architecture An ultra-modern airport welcoming visitors from all over the world

EDDB was meant to open in 2011 As I write this the date on my PC shows spring of 2014 and there is still no word when the airport will be opened Most peo-ple speculate it will happen sometime in 2016

There are many reasons for this delay and we could fill several pages discussing them Fact is that the air-port is pretty much ready to run but sitting there all empty Since all electrical and mechanical items have already been installed the airport must be kept run-ning on a constant basis to make sure the equipment doesnrsquot sit idle for too long Baggage sorting machi-nes lights and all sorts of equipment are running all on their own with no passenger in sight

All this has one advantage though If you want to re-create Berlin Brandenburg in FSX you get the best possible access unobstructed views of all the buil-dings and you can take perfect photographs for the creation of textures

This is exactly what the developers of Mega Airport Berlin have decided to do and the results are simply amazing

Two for the price of one

The new Brandenburg airport lies right next to Berlin ndash Schoenefeld airport In fact during busy hours air-craft are already using one of the new runways The creators decided to include the entire Schoenefeld airport in the package as well

Schoenefeld has been replicated with the same atten-tion to detail as Brandenburg so the package really does include two fully functioning airports If you are unsure whether you want Brandenburg to operate in your virtual world then the included configura-tion tool will make you very happy It allows you to close Brandenburg and only have Schoenefeld ope-rational That way you depict the exact situation you will find there at the moment All it takes is a mouse-click and Brandenburg can be opened or closed

The configuration tool is worth a mention It has a whole long list of options that will enable the player to customise the scenery to his or her liking Whether you want to change the amount of 3D grass or the resolution of the textures it can all be done from here

The old Schoenefeld airport has also been included with the same attention to detail as the new Brandenburg air-port

Brandenburg is a shiny new airport with some stunning architecture

Having a wander

Both Schoenefeld and Brandenburg have been re-created with astounding detail Whilst Schoenefeld shows its age with the old buildings and worn tar-mac Brandenburg looks and feels like a brand new airport

All buildings in and around the airfields are present and have some amazing details and crisp textures The main terminal of the new airport which is essen-tially a huge glass building simply looks great

The night lighting included is one of the best I have ever seen I decided to go for the ldquoall-out-optionrdquo in the configuration tool Whilst I noticed a bit of a drop in fps the visuals simply blew me away

If you are fps conscious then this airport shouldnrsquot worry you too much I put all my sliders to the right had 100 AI traffic with real world weather running and still got a comfortable 25 ndash 30 fps If you get less you can always tweak the scenery through the exten-sive config tool

Once airborne you will find that the developers have included a very extensive area around the airport as well Over 100 square kilometres of scenery have been included in this product

The included manual is extensive and worth a read There are some unique features of this scenery that are pointed out in the documentation

Conclusion

I really canrsquot fault this product It includes two fully functional airports with the option to switch opera-tions between them The 3D models look great and the textures are of a very high quality Both airports really feel exactly as I would expect them to The new Brandenburg is sleek modern nice and clean whilst Schoenefeld shows its age

The performance was good throughout the testing phase and the night lighting is a real treatIt is another Mega Airport that truly deserves its name The real EDDB may still be closed but the vir-tual version has landed Best of all it has done so in real style

757 ndash ProfessionalAirliner Add-On for X-PlaneX-Plane 10 clearly has the edge over FSX in certain areas Simulating modern complex airliners isnrsquot one of them It seems though that slowly but surely X-Plane is starting to fill that gap

The 757 ndash Professional claims to be the most realistic airliner ever created for X-Plane The list of features is impressive and the screenshots look greatTime for us to take a closer look

I have always had a soft spot for the Boeing 757 In my opinion it is an incredibly good looking aircraft with sleek lines which give it a beautiful appearance The aircraft also has a very good power to weight ratio making it extremely powerful and capable There have been some 757 add-ons in the past but in my opinion none of them really managed to capture the essence of this aircraft The 757 ndash Professional co-mes very close though

I must say the external model is the best X-Plane mo-del I have seen so far The aircraft looks just right and when you move the camera around the model you can see that every small detail has been perfectly captured

To my great delight the add-on also includes the win-glet version of the aircraft The winglets if installed make this aircraft even more beautifulThe way you get the winglets is actually quite inte-resting It is not a separate model of the aircraft but part of a very extensive menu which allows the play-

er to change all kinds of things In this set-up menu you can switch between winglets or non-winglets versions of the jet you can activate certain ground objects adjust a multitude of settings look up check-lists and even listen to PA announcements

All these options are already a bit of a hint that this is a very complex machine The list of fully functional systems seems endless There is also a very compre-hensive failure module and specially designed partic-le effects that will simulate smoke or sparks whene-ver appropriate

The aircraft comes with a fully functional FMS and two independent MCDUs I spent some time on the MCDU and whilst I did notice a few things missing it pretty much covers everything a sim pilot should needThe external and internal sounds are great too Ac-cording to the developerrsquos website they are all cus-tom made There are some very nice touches When taxing around an airport all of a sudden I received a call from the cabin crew When I answered I was told that I had forgotten to set the flaps in the take-off position (what a wise-guy)

The package includes two models covering the PW and RR power plants and four liveries The selection of liveries is rather unusual There is the obligatory Boeing livery and a very old BA livery together with two fictional ones (Lufthansa and Air France)

X-Plane


The external model is simply superb

Some nice animations and a very nice sound-set bring the 757 alive

In terms of functionality there is everything a virtual airline pilot could ask for

X-Plane


If you want to get something more realistic or usa-ble you will have to head to the developerrsquos websi-te where you can purchase different livery packs for $10 each

Airborne

The first three flights I just hand-flew the aircraft to see what it feels like I have never flown a real 757 but it all seems very convincing There was a lot of trimming needed which seems unusual but apart from that the aircraft was very nice to fly

The autopilot systems all work nicely too I program-med a SID into the FMS departed and activated the autopilot at 500ft AGL Initially the aircraft seemed to take a few moments to sort itself out but then it followed the procedure very nicely

If you are a bit worried that all this technology could be a bit overwhelming at first then fear not The air-craft can also be flown through a Quick-Start Mode This will make sure everything is ready and done for you You can just take-off and fly

All this complexity needs resources and this causes the only negative I could find when testing this pro-duct If you are used to flying with all graphics sliders up and settings to high or maxthen this aircraft will most likely cause some performance issues I had to reduce quite a few settings to get a nice smooth per-formance with high stable fps

Conclusion

Some people have claimed that this product is the ldquoPMDG of the X-Plane worldrdquo I think it is not quite there yet but the 757 - Professional is certainly get-ting there

It looks great flies great and all major systems re-quired to conduct a flight are modelled The flight deck looks beautiful and the included sound set is very good too If you have been looking for a highly realistic aircraft add-on that allows you to conduct airliner operations just like in the real world then look no further You wonrsquot find anything better for X-Plane than this

New York ndash New Haven Route With Amtrak HHP-8 Twin Pack

Testing routes created by Dovetail is always a plea-sure Building routes is something Dovetail has be-come very good at And the more exciting the real world counterpart the better the product tends to be

This time we hop across the Atlantic into one of the biggest and busiest cities of them all New YorkThe included route is surprisingly extensive It starts off in the heart of New York City and includes the famous Grand Central Terminal From there it makes its way through the wide-spread city all the way to New Haven in Connecticut

The route also includes a part of the Harlem under-ground line and many branch lines that make for in-teresting scenarios One example is the Yankee bran-ch which connects the Yankee football stadium to the mainline and is used whenever matches are heldThe entire route is electrified and also included in the package is the ultra-modern ACS-64 loco with some carriages

All in all the route is 75 miles long It comes with six scenarios and is Quick Drive compatible Although it should be noted that when I tested Quick Drive there was no KI traffic to be seen So it is a rather lonely affair

Driving through the Big Apple

Re-creating an iconic and complex city such as New York canrsquot be easy Nevertheless Dovetail games did an excellent job The surroundings are full of custom built objects and buildings and the feeling of dri-ving through a big busy city is replicated very well You can even see the Manhattan skyline in the back-ground

When approaching the end of the line in New York I noticed that the framerate dropped quite a bit I think this has to be the most performance hungry route I have tested so far Having said that I never got a jerky performance or big stutters The route might not run as fluid as others but it is only in certain places and to be honest I canrsquot see how that could be avoided without losing the beautiful visuals

As mentioned before there is a lot to discover and somehow I got the feeling that the six included scena-rios do not do justice to the potential for scenarios along this route When looking at the workshop one can see that the community is already in the process of closing all the gaps and there are plenty of scena-rios to choose from

Train Simulator 2014


Whilst driving near Manhat-tan the fps can drop some-what

hellip but once you leave the city behind performance is no issue anymore

The included rolling stock is of solid quality

The route Includes the ACS-64 loco a brand new ma-chine that has only just entered service This modern loco is built by Siemens and is extremely powerful

The loco comes with several fully functioning safety systems If you are used to European routes then it is worth taking a look at the manual otherwise you are likely to get caught out by the many monitoring systems

The carriages come with passenger views and are also very nicely modelled The sound is surprisingly good and imitates the real world carriages pretty well

Rolling stock two

Customers have the option to buy an additional loco with this route the HHP-8 If bought as a bundle the products are cheaper than if bought separately

As always with Dovetail rolling stock the external model is very beautiful I compared it to videos and photographs of the real thing and I must say the at-tention to detail is simply stunning The cab looks nice too although for my taste it seems rather dark The included cab lighting does little to help The sound is of an average quality The package includes four scenarios for the HHP-8 on the New York ndash New Haven route The loco is also Quick Drive compatible

Conclusion

All in all this is a really great package The route its-elf is very well made It includes tonnes of custom buildings a fully functional signalling system and faithfully re-created train stations The landscaping has been done to an amazingly detailed level Dri-ving into New York with the Manhattan skyline in the background is a real treat

Dispolok BR 189Add-On lokomotive for Train Simulator 2014

Once again Dovetail has released a modern German loco This time it is the BR 189 This loco is mostly used for freight trains but sometimes it can be seen pulling passenger services too

The product can be purchased via steam Therefore all downloads installations and future updates are fully automatic The loco comes with container wa-gons (SGGRSS series) and four scenarios for the Ham-burg ndash Hanover route The loco is also Quick Drive ready

Once on the tracks the model looks very very good I take my hat off to the 3D modellers who have done an incredible job The amount of detail is simply stun-ning From whichever angle you look at the BR 189 it is a real beauty

The great 3D modelling carries on in the cab There is lots of detail and very nice textures All the switches are nicely rendered and the displays look crisp and highly realistic

Worth mentioning is the lighting in the cab The in-struments have a proper backlighting and there are different settings for the cab lights Altogether the different lighting effects create a very nice atmos-phere when driving at night

Once you get over the good looks it is time to get moving As always with Dovetail products there is not much to it Just put the reverser forward release the brakes and go The package also includes some freight wagons and I must say they are of solid quali-ty The 3D models are simply great and the sound-set is very nice There are different containers that can be loaded onto the wagons so even when creating long trains there is never too much repetition

As so often with Dovetail rolling stock this is a bit of a mixed bag The model is stunning and I love the cab lighting There are some very nice details such as the LED headlights The sound is not too bad but still far away from the real thing The functionality is very limited but I guess that is the market Dovetail is aiming at
