Bob Peters, the leading owner and
breeder in Perth, appears to hold
a strong hand in his bid to win a
third consecutive Railway Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Ascot today.
Exciting five-year-old mare Inspirational
Girl (Reliable Man) will lead Peters’ charge for
Grant and Alana Williams, aiming to follow
in the footsteps of former stable companions
Galaxy Star (Redoute's Choice) and Regal
Power (Pierro), the 2018 and 2019 winners
respectively.
Inspirational Girl has a near-perfect race
record with eight wins, one second and one
third from ten starts, but she will run against
elite-level company for the first time today having
landed the Asian Beau Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on
her last appearance. Continued on page 2>>

She beat the reopposing Too Close
The Sun (Carlton House) by a head that day, but Peters is under no illusion
how difficult it will be for her to continue rising through the ranks.
“She hasn’t raced in this sort of company up until now. She hadn’t
even raced in stakes company until her last start,” Peters told ANZ
Bloodstock News.
“It is a massive step up to a Group 1, so it is very hard to judge what’s
going to happen when she meets stronger company.
“We hope she can continue to improve. This race is a very hard race to
win – it’s the hardest race to win in the yearly program for this state. It’s always
been that way, so you never go into the Railway Stakes with a lot of confidence.
“But she’s been doing everything we’ve asked of her and now we’re
just going to ask for a lot more from her.”
Peters has had yet another successful spring, headlined by Arcadia
Queen (Pierro) taking out the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and
Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), but alluded to victory in his home state
being extra special, and also extra hard.
“It’s always a race that anyone in this state would want to win. We’ve
been fortunate enough to win it four times now, spread over quite a long
time,” he continued.
“The first time we won it was 2001, and then we won it in 2014, 2018
and 2019. In that time we have won most of the other big races more times
than that, but this has always been the hardest one to win.”
Also running in the famous cerise and white colours today is homebred
Truly Great (Dundeel), who has a similar profile to Inspirational Girl
having climbed through the ranks in lesser company.
The five-year-old gelding made his first start in stakes company a
winning one when landing the RJ Peters Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m), named in
honour of his owner, last weekend.
“He ran well last start and he’s very similar to Inspirational Girl. He hasn’t
had a lot of runs, he stepped up to Group 3 company for the first time last start
and won that, so he’s very much in the same mould as her going forward.
“We hope that he can take the next step, but it is a very, very big step
upwards.”
Truly Great is backing-up a week later after running on Soft7 at Ascot,
but Peter believes his effort in testing conditions will not impact his
chances of success today.
“I’m not so worried about that, he’s a pretty strong horse. I’m really
just concerned about the massive jump in class he’s facing.”
The aforementioned Too Close The Sun rates as the main market rival
to Peters’ promising
pair and he is out
of Old Money (Old
Spice), who was bred
and owned by Peters.
Old Money won
the Western Australia
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)
and the Western
Australia Oaks (Gr 2,

2400m) in 2000, but had a mixed record in
her post-race career, producing just five runners from eight foals between
2004 and her death in 2016.
However, she seems to have struck gold with her last two foals,
producing 2018 Mackinnon Stakes winner Trap For Fools (Poet’s Voice)
two years before Too Close The Sun, who is also the only stakes winner by
Carlton House (Street Cry).
Owned by The Queen, Carlton House finished his career in Australia
with two Group 1 placings having been a dual Group winner in Britain.
He was sent off as favourite for the 2011 Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f), but
finished a length behind Pour Moi (Montjeu) in third.
Peters views Too Close The Son as one of the big dangers to his
runners.
“There are three horses in the race that are going to be the hardest to
beat. You’ve got Too Close The Sun, who happens to be out of one of our
very good mares, which makes it hard.
“Kay Cee is a very good mare that won the Group 1 Kingston Town
last year.
“Godolphin’s Kementari has got a very good barrier (1) and he’s a
Group 1 horse, so he could get a very easy run in the race.
“I don’t know how to rank them, but they’re the three I would be most
worried about. It wouldn’t surprise me if any horse in the race won it.”
Peters was pleased to report that his star mare Arcadia Queen made
it home safely on Wednesday evening
after Covid-19 restrictions made
transportation from Victoria to
Western Australia problematic.
“She travelled quite well.
We’ve started to go over and
check her out now and she
seems like she’s come home a lot
better than what she did from her
campaign last year, when she was
knocked down and hurt her back, but
this time she seems quite free in her action
which is very pleasing,” Peters said.
Inspirational Girl’s jockey Willie Pike decided to miss riding Arcadia
Queen in the Mackinnon Stakes in preference of returning to Western
Australia for today’s Group 1.
Pike’s mandatory 14-day isolation period came to an end last night
after spending the time on his 1300-acre farm in Beaufort River.
He will be sitting on Inspirational Girl for the first time since July
today, but Peters believes he will be raring to go.
“He’s had two weeks away and has been isolating down on his farming
property, so I’m sure he’ll be keen to get back in amongst things again,”
Peters said.

Winx ‘very unlikely’ to be served this springWinx (Street Cry) part-owner Peter
Tighe revealed yesterday that Winx was
recovering well after her first foal, a filly
by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit),
was stillborn. However, he also admitted
that time was running out for Winx to be
served this spring, with the champion mare
appearing far more likely to return to the
breeding barn in 2021. Tighe, a part-owner
of inaugural The Gong (1600m) winner
Mister Sea Wolf (Amadeus) - who returns
to defend his title in the $1 million feature
today - told News Corp’s Ray Thomas in
a wide-ranging interview that Winx took
time to overcome her ordeal but that she
bounced back thanks to the top-class
veterinary care she received.
Dam of top juvenile, More Joyous son headline Inglis DigitalGroup 1 winner Small Minds (Canny Lad),
dam of $1 million Golden Gift (1100m)
winner Sneaky Five (Fastnet Rock), and Best
Ever (Snitzel), the third foal out of champion
mare More Joyous (More Than Ready),
are among the horses on offer in the Inglis
Digital November (Late) Sale, which closes
on Wednesday. Small Minds, who won the
Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) in 2010,
has had two stakes winners from three foals
to race, with last year’s Jungle Dawn Classic
(Listed, 1400m) winner Beautiful Mind
(So You Think) joining Sneaky Five. She is
offered in foal to Grunt (O’Reilly). To view the

Irish Flame into Ballarat CupMornington trainer Brett Scott received the
news he had been waiting for when he found
out his in-form galloper Irish Flame (Zed) had
gained a start in today’s Ballarat Cup (Listed,
2000m). Irish Flame was first emergency but
secured a run when Power Scheme (Fiorente)
was scratched yesterday morning. The former
champion jumps jockey now has two ex-
New Zealand gallopers in the race in Our Big
Mike (Don Eduardo) and Irish Flame. Scott is
pleased with the outcome as he regards Irish
Flame as the best chance of his pair. "The key
to him is that he needs the race to be run at a
good tempo and I've got one of the horses in the
race, Our Big Mike, along with Inverloch, whose
racing style is to go forward so that's taken care
of," Scott said. Irish Flame was trained in New
Zealand by Scott's great mate John Wheeler
and connections sent him over without any
grandiose plans. "In his seven Australian starts
he's won around $215,000 so he's more than
paid his way and he's only getting better with
racing," Scott said, noting that Irish Flame
handled firm tracks but needed time to recover
from them and was a bit better on tracks with
give in them. With this in mind, the trainer will
aim Irish Flame at the Easter carnival with the
Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) his main goal. He
said Our Big Mike's failure in the Kyneton Cup
(2000m) should be forgiven as he was given no
peace in the lead.
Game Keeper poised to bounce back In other Ballarat Cup news, co-trainer Calvin
McEvoy has issued an upbeat bulletin on the
claims of Game Keeper (Fastnet Rock), last
seen finishing sixth in the Furphy Plate (Listed,
1800m) at Flemington having won over 2000
metres at the track in May. Originally aimed
towards the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m),
Game Keeper’s sights were lowered having
been well-held in two Group 3 contests earlier
in the spring. “He just told us that at that level
he couldn't quite stay with some of those
really good international horses,” McEvoy
told Racing.com. “So he went back to South
Australia, went back to our farm on the river
and just freshened up and arrived back here
for that run at Flemington, which I thought
was a really good run. He just never really
got the momentum when he needed it last
start.” Regarding today’s assignment, McEvoy
continued: “He's really good, he looks like he's
about to peak to me, he looks fit, he looks well.
He's trained on perfectly, 2000 metres suits and
I don't think he'll get as far back either, I'd like to
see him in the first half.”
McKenzie’s Ballarat success makes Pal’s task tougherJunipal (Reset) will line up in today’s Ballarat
Cup as one of two representatives for Ciaron
Maher and David Eustace and for co-owner
Lachlan McKenzie, the strength of opposition
awaiting the five-year-old is partly down to
his own success. Between 2011 and 2019,
McKenzie was chief executive of the Ballarat
Turf Club, playing a pivotal role in elevating
the race to become the richest country cup in
Australia. "I'm really proud of what's happened
with Ballarat Cup day and I am proud of the
fact that I had some input in building the race
day to where it is and getting Magic Millions
on board and the prize-money for the Cup and
those sorts of things. But I have also made a rod
for my own back a bit," McKenzie told Racing.
com. "This is the best Ballarat Cup field I have
#REWRITINGHISTORY WRITTEN TYCOON| 6 |
seen and probably what we did with that day
has made it much harder to win the race."
McKenzie, who part-owned Junipal’s half-
brother, Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Palentino (Teofilo), said of today’s
contest: "I've been racing horses for a long time
and been lucky enough to have a couple of
good ones, but I don't think I have ever been as
excited going into a horse race as I am for this.”
Rodd’s shock at Ballarat’s stellar line-upThe strength of today’s Ballarat Cup line-up
has also been echoed by Michael Rodd, who
will partner the Chris Waller-trained Kings Will
Dream (Casamento) in the $500,000 feature.
“Brad Spicer (managing owner) and Chris
(Waller) thought this is going to be the perfect
race for him because everything is going to be
going to the paddock and then the field came
out and it’s like (expletive) ‘look at this race’,”
Rodd told Racing.com. Winner of the Turnbull
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) last October, Kings Will
Dream has placed twice in four outings during
a relatively luckless preparation this time
around. He will break from barrier 14 under
61.5 kilograms today. “It’s a full field, he has a lot
of weight and there is class all the way through
the field,” Rodd continued. “He probably would
have gone around favourite and been a great
chance, and he still is a great chance, but the
job has got a lot harder.”
Two wins in a week for Bon? Say it’s SoEnigmatic seven-year-old So Si Bon (So You
Think), who got back to winning ways with a
last-gasp success in Sandown’s Eclipse Stakes
(Gr 3, 1800m) last Saturday, will make a quick
return to action when he contests today’s
Ballarat Cup. "I hope he can (win), it would
be the biggest thrill ever if he can," co-trainer
Ben Hayes told Racing.com. "He's really come
through the race really well, we're very happy
with him, I think barrier one for him is a great
barrier. He's a horse that I always say we need
to ride for luck and kind of trick him to the
line, and I think if he gets the right runs he'll be
travelling well and he'll be hopefully finishing
in the finish, he doesn't often run a bad race.” So
Si Bon will shoulder 62 kilograms in the hands
of Damian Lane and Hayes continued: "I don't
think the big weight will matter too much and
he'll hit the line well, he's a fit horse." Lindsay
Park will also be represented by Harlem
(Champs Elysees) and Furrion (Camelot). Of
the former, who was last seen running fifth in
the Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), Hayes
added: "I think Harlem is going really well. He's
been racing well all spring and hopefully it's his
time. I've never seen a healthier and happier
horse, he's really been running well all prep
and I think this will be a much easier race than
last start when he ran into Arcadia Queen and
Fifty Stars.”
Cup target for OdeonCo-trainer Simon Zahra is confident Odeon
(Zacinto), runner-up in the Cranbourne Cup
(Listed, 2025m) on his penultimate outing
prior to running third in the Furphy Plate on
November 3, is primed for his intended grand
final in today’s Ballarat Cup. "He looks pretty
well-weighted, he's drawn to get a good run
and three weeks in between runs is probably
the key to him, so I wouldn't swap him for any
runner," Zahra told Racing.com. "Half a million
(prize-money) probably invites a lot of people
to hang on doesn't it? It's a good incentive for
late carnival. Obviously an afterthought for
some, but it's a race we have targeted." The
consistent seven-year-old will be without the
services of regular jockey Jamie Kah today, who
is suspended, and will instead be partnered
by Daniel Moor as he breaks from barrier six.
“Jamie has got the key to him a bit...but Daniel
has been doing a lot of riding for us and he just
does as he's told," Zahra continued. "Riding
him conservative is always the better option
because if he gets there too soon, he puts the
flag up and thinks he's done his job."
Stockade to provide Eureka moment for CobraMike Moroney is hoping today’s VOBIS Gold
Eureka Stockade (1400m) can shed some light
on the optimum distance for his talented three-
year-old Shelby Cobra (Toronado). A three and
a half-length winner over 1400 metres at Sale
second-up, Shelby Cobra made it two wins from
three starts when taking out the Amanda Elliott
(Listed, 1400m) on November 7. A $1.40 chance
with the TAB for this afternoon’s assignment at
Ballarat, Moroney said of Shelby Cobra: "One
thing is for sure, he has any amount of ability.
He has a turn of foot only good horses have
but I haven't quite worked out what his best
distance is. I thought he was a bit fizzy in the
run (in the Amanda Elliott) and Ben Melham
rode him and said that as well, which leads
me back to thinking he's a 1200-metre to a
1400-metre horse, which is what Ben thought.”
Moroney continued: “After his first start at
Moonee Valley, Mark (Zahra) said he felt like a
1400-metre horse to a miler and I didn't agree.
I came around when he won on him at Sale
on a heavy track but after Flemington, I'm not
so sure. Hopefully we'll know a bit more after
Saturday and can work out an autumn program
for him. We're still on a learning curve with
him. If he can relax then we'll plan around 1400
metres and further."
Prophet poised for better luckCranbourne-based trainer Ray Besanko is
hoping for better luck when his Rock Prophet
(Moshe) lines up in the opening Benchmark
70 Handicap (1100m) at Ballarat today. The
four-year-old was intended to line-up in the
$150,000 Drumborg Grand Handicap (1100m)
at Flemington on November 7 but missed out
as second emergency. "We'd set him for the race
at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week but
unfortunately he had no luck at Bendigo the
start prior (when eighth behind Hi Stranger on
October 28) and didn't get enough weight to get
into the (Grand Handicap) field," Besanko told
Racing.com. "That's the way it goes and so we'll
head to Ballarat on Saturday and hopefully he
can put his head in front for us." Looking ahead
with Rock Prophet, a dual winner from 12 starts,
Besanko added: "He's been racing well and is still
learning. I definitely feel he could be a Group 2
horse, maybe a Group 1 horse next year.”
Schofield’s high hopes for Gong contender Reloaded Riding trackwork for Chris Waller has earned
Glyn Schofield the mount on Reloaded
(Snitzel) in today’s $1 million The Gong at
Kembla Grange. "Trackwork is always a nice
thing to do because you get to ride his horses

and get the opportunity to fill in in the morning
and I put my hand up for the ride," Schofield
said. “I've ridden Reloaded a couple of times
in work and he really feels like he's on song.
He feels like he's in a good place." Group
1-placed as a juvenile, Reloaded ran third in the
Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on his return in
September, but was bogged down on a heavy
track in Rosehill’s Golden Eagle (1500m) last
start. "He is a multiple placegetter in Group
races and he's down in the handicaps so he's
got a lot to like about him,” Schofield continued.
“He has really been right up to the top types and
under handicap terms on Saturday, I think he's
right in it, especially if the track stays dry."
Rule The World to rejuvenate careerCo-trainer Adrian Bott is hopeful Rule
The World (Hallowed Crown) can get his
career back on track when he lines up in the
Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) later on the
Kembla Grange card. The four-year-old looked
a bright prospect when winning his first three
outings last spring, but finished down the
field in his two autumn starts, including the
Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m). "He didn't
quite come up. There were no issues that we
could put our finger on," Bott said. "Obviously
he wasn't performing at his best, especially
from the early promise he showed at his first
couple of runs. We gave him a good break and
just backed off him and have given him the time
he may have needed. Judging by his trials, he
looks to have come back well and that seems to
have been a good decision.” Regarding today’s
contest, a 12-runner affair in which Rule The
World will break from barrier ten under Tim
Clark, Bott added: “He is effective first up and
he's done plenty of work. He is there to be very
competitive."
Former plumber set for milestoneEarlier at Kembla, former plumber Jade
McDonald is gearing up for the biggest day
of his training career when stable duo Roc
De Khaper (Roc De Cambes) and Departing
Bullet (Bullet Train) line up in the TAB Highway
Handicap (1600m). McDonald, previously a
trackwork rider for Goulburn trainers Emma
Longmire and Greame Spackman, took out
his NSW trainers' licence late last year before
establishing his breaking, training and pre-
training operation at Goulburn racecourse
in January. Roc De Khaper produced an eye-
catching second to Charmmebaby (Charm
Spirit) on a heavy track over 1500 metres at
Rosehill a fortnight ago and McDonald said
of the five-year-old: "It was a beautiful run at
Rosehill and the 1600-metre journey will suit
him down to the ground. We've taken a very
soft approach with him as he can get a bit jarry
so we just try to keep him happy." Of Departing
Bullet, he added: "It was a luckless run down
the short stretch at Gundagai last start and by
the time he started to warm up the race was
over and done with. I was hoping he'd get a start
as I think he'll be a real player as well."
Sugar to go Boom in Swiss AceBaylee Nothdurft is sweet on the claims of
Sugar Boom (Spirit Of Boom) in today’s Swiss
Ace Plate (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast after
the speedy four-year-old supplemented her
success in restricted company at Doomben
on October 17 with an an all-the-way win in a
1050-metre Deagon barrier trial on November
10. Of the trial, Nothdurft said: "She went really
good. She showed her customary gate speed
and got the front and relaxed really nicely and
had a good kick when asked. I didn't ask her to
do a hell of a lot, it was more of a pipe-opener,
but she couldn't have trialled any better." Sugar
Boom is the TAB’s $2.80 favourite for the Swiss
Ace Plate and she is one of four representatives
for Tony Gollan, joining stable companions
Ms Catherine (Shooting To Win), Just Orm
(Falvelon) and Capital Connection (Denman).
Monsieur earns Tatura Cup berthKane Harris is looking forward to in-form six-
year-old Monsieur Macron (Swiss Ace) taking his
chance in today’s Tatura Cup (1450m). The winner
of a Benchmark 58 at Echuca on November 3,
Monsieur Macron will go in search of his third
victory in four outings as one of ten runners in the
$45,000 contest. “He's been racing in good heart
but we're probably lucky that we've found a race
that's not beyond him and is the next level up,"
Harris told Racing.com. "We're the rock-hard fit
horse that's doing the best we can do, which gets
him into the race a little bit, I think." Harris also
believes the track will suit Monsieur Macron’s
on-speed running style. "I think it is going to suit
him better than Swan Hill and Echuca, where he's
won, because we know that we're going to be on
speed and trying to steal a break," he added.
VRC formally farewells ElliottThe Victoria Racing Club (VRC) formally
farewelled its chairman Amanda Elliott at a VRC
board meeting yesterday. Earlier this year, the
VRC announced a succession plan, outlining a
leadership transition of the board from Amanda
Elliott to former CEO and board member Neil
Wilson to be completed this month, as well as the
appointment of new VRC CEO Steve Rosich. “This
year has truly been like no other in the 156-year
history of the VRC, and Amanda’s leadership during
her time as chairman has ensured that the club was
well-placed to withstand the challenges that we
faced,” Wilson said in a statement. “For the first time
in its history, the Melbourne Cup carnival took place
without our members and the general public on
course. The board, under Amanda’s leadership, was
determined to ensure that the carnival would not
only proceed, but thrive, championing innovative
ways to engage with members and racing fans
across the globe. A well-credentialed and stable
board is critical to ensure the club is on a strong
footing for the benefit of members both now as we
emerge from the pandemic and well into the future.”
South Australia’s fortunes improveThe prospect of racing returning in South
Australia next week has been given a glimmer
of hope with the state’s hard lockdown due
to end this evening. Premier Steven Marshall
yesterday announced the early end of what was
originally planned as a six-day 'circuit-breaker'
after it was revealed a person had lied to contact
tracers. Racing is scheduled for Morphettville
on Wednesday and Balaklava on Thursday,
with further fixtures at Morphettville next
Saturday (November 28) and Strathalbyn on
Sunday (November 29). "Given the announced
easing with gyms and hospitality venues, we
are reasonably hopeful of recommencing
race meetings on Wednesday 25 November at

Morphettville," Thoroughbred Racing South
Australia boss Nick Redin said in a statement
yesterday. "This advice may not come through
until late today or early tomorrow. Race
meetings will be restricted to essential persons
only."
NSW-Victoria movement easier from MondayRacing participants from New South Wales will
be able to enter Victoria without having to self-
isolate or undergo a Covid-19 test from Monday
after the NSW government's decision to open
up the border. "Racing Victoria continues to
monitor instances of community transmission
in Australia and will revise its protocols on
movement as appropriate to protect the
industry," a Racing Victoria statement read.
Racing Victoria also confirmed that South
Australian horses will be allowed to continue
to race in Victoria, despite the SA government
closing its western border.
NEW ZEALAND
Miss Federer retiredThe latest in a long line of knee issues has
ended the racing career of multiple stakes
winner Miss Federer (Swiss Ace). “She’s been
retired,” Riccarton trainer Andrew Carston said.
“She’s already had two lots of knee surgery,
and unfortunately she’s chipped a knee again.”
Carston paid just NZ$10,000 to buy the filly at
the 2018 NZB Premier Yearling Sale. Raced by
a syndicate of 17 owners, Miss Federer won five
races and NZ$163,035 in stakes. She captured
the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and
Woburn Farm 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) during
her juvenile season, then added the Canterbury
Belle Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and NZB Airfreight
Stakes (Listed, 1400m) to be named last
season’s New Zealand Bloodstock South Island
Filly of the Year. “For a $10,000 filly, she’s done
an absolutely amazing job for us,” Carston said.
“She had her question marks from day one, but
she came back from her first knee operation
and won another two Listed races for us. The
second operation didn’t turn out to be quite so
successful, but it is what it is. We’ll look after her
and tidy her up again, and then we’ll more than
likely sell her as a broodmare.”
True Enough spellsMurray Baker and Andrew Forsman have sent
Group 1 winner True Enough (Nom Du Jeu)
out for a spell after two sub-par performances
this spring. The gelding rose to stardom last
season with victories in the Zabeel Classic (Gr
1, 2000m), Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (Gr 2,
1600m) and Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m), along
with placings in the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m), Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and
New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). However,
this season he has finished last in both the Spring
Sprint and the Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m).
“We’ve sent him out for a spell,” Forsman said.
“For whatever reason, he just doesn’t seem to
have come up in this preparation. We can’t
really fault him physically at the moment, but
it’s been clear in his two races that he just hasn’t
come back at the level he’s capable of. So we’ll
give him a nice break and try again a bit later
on. We have no firm plans for him at this stage,
we’ll just see how things go with him.”
Railway potential target for JakartaAlex Oliveira is expecting more of the same from
Only In Jakarta (Snitzel) when she contests the
Counties Bowl (Listed, 1100m) at Pukekohe
today. The five-year-old mare kept her undefeated
record intact when winning at Te Rapa last month
and has continued to impress Oliveira. The first
emergency for the race, Only In Jakarta gained
her place in the field after the scratchings of Short
Fuse (Per Incanto) and Endless Drama (Lope
De Vega), and will jump from barrier nine in the
14-horse field. Oliveira has been pleased with
the mare in the lead-up to her fifth start and he
is quietly confident heading into her first tilt at
stakes company, with the Railway Handicap (Gr
1, 1200m) a potential target. “In the last couple
of weeks she has been working really well so I
am looking forward to running her,” he said. “It
is another step up for her, there are some good
horses there, but I think if she is on her game we
will see the same performance that we have seen
in the past. 1100 metres should be ideal for her.
We are thinking about the Railway at this stage,
but we will see what tomorrow brings first. We
will see how she pulls up after this race and then I
will probably give her 10 days in the paddock and
then get her going for the Railway.”
Levin on the radar for ShezzacatchShezzacatch (Savabeel), a shock stakes winner
on debut, returns for start two in today’s opener
at Awapuni as she plots a path towards the
Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) in January. Two
months on from that auspicious debut in the Si
Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m), the Guy
Lowry and Grant Cullen-prepared Shezzacatch
is set to line up for her second start over 1300
metres. “She’d always shown us plenty of ability
leading into that debut run, and it was great
to see her go out and perform the way she did
first-up,” Lowry said. “I’m not sure how much
has come out of that race, but it was definitely
a really good performance on the day. We gave
her a bit of a break in between, and we’ve been
happy with her since she came back into work.
This race at Awapuni on Saturday is definitely
not her end goal. We’re just sending her there to
try to further her education a little bit. She was
pretty erratic in her first race, so we’re hoping
to see a bit of improvement there. After this,
she’ll go to the Eulogy Stakes back at Awapuni
next month, and then her end goal is the Levin
Classic at Trentham in January. Hopefully she’ll
be good enough to make it there. So we’re
just hoping she’ll learn a bit more from the
experience this weekend, and this race should
hopefully be another step in the right direction.”
Whip use consultation beginsNew Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) is
currently seeking consultation from industry
participants and other interested parties
regarding potential changes to the whip rules.
The most recent amendments were made in
October last year, which led to the current
directive which restricts the use of the whip to
no more than five times prior to the final 100
metres, after which it may be used at the rider’s
discretion. Other racing jurisdictions have
already imposed more restrictive whip usage
than New Zealand with France limiting whip
use to just five times within a race; Ireland,
eight times and the UK, seven. From October
this year, jockeys riding in California were
prohibited from using the whip more than six
times in a race, and from using it more than
twice in succession without letting the horse

respond. Among the matters for consultation
are the number of times a whip should be
used throughout a race; whether this should
be allowed to be in succession; the technique
of whip use allowed; the design of the whip;
penalty guidelines; and what amendments
should be made regarding jumping races. The
consultation document and the accompanying
background and context can be found here.
The consultation period will close on February
12, 2021, following which all feedback will
be considered and recommendations will be
made to meetings of the NZTR Integrity and
Welfare Committee and the NZTR Board.

HK: Golden Sixty primed for Jockey Club MileGolden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro) worked through
his final gallop on Thursday morning at Sha
Tin, with trainer Francis Lui confirming his
star galloper is ready to shine in tomorrow’s
Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). “He’s good,
he’s in-form and he has a good draw – I think
he’s the best horse at the moment,” Lui said. So
far this season, Golden Sixty has swept aside
all-comers, just as he did last season through
a campaign which culminated in Hong Kong
Derby (Listed, 2000m) glory. Now, he’s looking
for his third win this campaign and his tenth
in succession as he marches toward the Hong
Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on December 13.
While Golden Sixty undoubtedly has brilliance,
he does have a quirk with it. “He does hang, he
did it last start, but if you look at his previous
wins he always hangs a little bit, but maybe
this time the horse, when he passed the horse
inside of him, he just hung a little bit more,” Lui
said but the handler is unperturbed: “It’s not
necessary to correct this - it’s just his character,
like all horses. You just have to relax him, that’s
his style, to stay behind a few runners; there’s
a little worry about him being caught behind
horses on the inside – anything can happen.”
HK: First stakes test for Mighty GiantChallenging Golden Sixty’s unbeaten streak is
Mighty Giant (Power), who himself has built an
impressive record, winning his last five races.
However, he is making a first attempt at a stakes
race at his first start beyond 1400 metres. “We’re
going to find out, it’s a big throw at the stumps
and it’s hard to go there with a lot of confidence
thinking you’re going to beat Golden Sixty
because he’s such a good horse,” jockey Zac
Purton said. “My bloke can only win and he’s
been doing that, he hasn’t been beyond 1400
metres, so he has to step up in distance and he
faces a big jump in class. But he’s honest, he’ll
give us his best, he’s got a good racing style
so he’ll be out there and let’s hope he can do
it.” Ricky Yiu’s tenacious chestnut likes to roll
forward to sit close to the speed before grinding
his rivals into submissions, a tactic that lessens
the luck factor and always ensures a chance.
“He’s been out on his feet at the end of his
1400-metre races but they’ve all been very hard
run races, they’ve been strong gallops and he’s
been entitled to be a little bit tired,” Purton said.
“Maybe at the mile he can have a bit more of
a breather and that might help him but until
you try a horse at a distance you can never
be certain that they’re going to run it, so we’ll
find out on the weekend.”
HK: Exultant bids to return to winning formHorse of the Year Exultant (Teofilo) is gearing
up for his bid to become the second horse
to win back-to-back Jockey Club Cups (Gr
2, 2000m), before a Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1,
2400m) tilt. Three-time champion stayer and
fellow Horse of the Year Viva Pataca (Marju)
succeeded in 2007 and 2008. Exultant,
upstaged by stablemate Furore (Pierro) last
start in the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (Gr 3, 1800m),
has pleased champion jockey Zac Purton this
campaign and the rider is looking forward to
pairing with the five-time Group 1 winner for
his second run back this season. “My bloke
was first-up (last time), he will have taken
benefit from that first-up run and hopefully
he’s just taken that next step. He is an older
horse so sometimes they can take a little bit
longer to come to hand – I thought his run
was good and I’m looking forward to riding
him again,” Purton said. “For a race that on
paper looked like it had no speed, everyone
had the same idea and they wanted to be a
little bit handier than they normally would
be and that injected more speed into the race
for the first half-mile than was necessary. All
those horses that were up there except my
bloke fell in a hole and the horse out the back
with the lighter weight, that did no work early
on and had a suck run, was able to get over
the top of us.” Exultant is looking to recapture
the Vase crown he won two years ago but
which he let slip last year, and forms one part
of a three-pronged attack on the Jockey Club
Cup by trainer Tony Cruz, with Time Warp
(Archipenko) also featuring.

UK: Mehmas set for hefty rise on Tally-Ho's seven-strong rosterTally-Ho Stud resident Mehmas
(Acclamation) is set to be offered at €25,000
(approx. AUD$40,500) for the 2021 breeding
season. The County Westmeath farm has
raised the young stallion by 233 per cent from
his mark of €7,500 (approx. AUD$12,150) this
year after sensational returns from his debut
crop on the track. Mehmas has supplied an
incredible 47 individual winners and four at
stakes level, headed by Middle Park Stakes
(Gr 1, 6f ) winner Supremacy. Last month, he
became the most successful European first
season sire in history when passing Iffraaj’s
(Zafonic) record of 37 first-crop winners,
set in 2010. Tally-Ho’s leading light Kodiac
(Danehill), who produced another couple
of Group 1 scorers through Campanelle

fee of €65,000 (approx. AUD$105,500)

BY JAMES STEVENS OF THE RACING POST
Australian-based jockey Lee
Newman was close to tears when
getting within touching distance
of Bahrain International Trophy
(2000m) glory last year and employed identical
confident tactics this time around on Simsir
(Zoffany), who stunned his ten international
challengers in the £500,000 showpiece.
Last year, Newman and 22-1 shot Rustang
(Holy Roman Emperor) were gunned down late by
European raiders Royal Julius (Royal Applause) and
Turgenev (Dubawi) but the 2000 British champion
apprentice, now based in Australia, maintained the
faith in his ambitious riding style to race prominently
and kick for home at the two-furlong pole.
Just like 12 months ago, Newman and his
outside chance entered the final furlong with
a sizeable but diminishing lead, with Frankie
Dettori and Global Giant (Shamardal) and the
Ryan Moore-ridden Sovereign (Galileo) closing
in at an alarming rate. This time, however, the
line came just in time to complete the shock.
Newman said: "It was a good race run at a
fair pace. I knew I needed to be close to Coolagh
Forest as he'd be near the front. My horse is
good but he doesn't really have that turn of foot,
he's not electric with it.
"When he hit the front he wandered and I
had to work at him but he kept giving. I knew he
was decent and I think he's better than that too.
"He was a dark horse, I thought before the
race I'd be in with a squeak. If you did your
homework he had a strong chance of a place –
he needed everything to go right and it did."
Simsir was scoring on his first start for Fawzi
Nass, who works his horses on the Sakhir track
every day and was also responsible for fourth-
place finisher Port Lions (Kodiac).
The John Gosden-trained Global Giant
came closest of the ten international challengers,
eventually beaten a neck, with Sovereign third
and Lord Glitters (Whipper) fifth.
There was no fairytale farewell for
retiring Deirdre (Harbinger), who was eighth,
while Certain Lad (Clodovil), Loxley (New
Approach), Bangkok (Australia), Dream
Castle (Frankel), Desert Encounter (Halling)
and Lady Wannabe (Camelot) were out of
luck in a bunched finish.
Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, owner of
the runner-up and a key figure in the evolution
of the Bahrain International, believes the
result will boost chances of Group-status when
assessed in the next few months.
"I'm delighted with his run [of Global
Giant]," he said. "He represented himself well
and it's good to have a locally-trained winner.
The right horses were by the front so we hope
the race will achieve pattern status next year.
We'll be back next season, absolutely."
