EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: ANDREW COPLEY MANAGING EDITOR: PHIL WEIR

Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state.

GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues.

Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events.

It is GRV’s goal to have each edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria available on-line at grv.org.au on or before the last day of the previous month, and arriving in letter boxes by the 10th day of each month.

CEO’s UpdateWelcome to the August issue of Greyhound Monthly Victoria. This time of the year is usually one of the quieter periods for our sport but much has been happening lately. Firstly, following confirmation that Saturday morning racing will continue, Victoria’s racing program will be boosted from 23 to 26 meetings a week from now until July 2021. An additional $1.5 million will be added to the existing prizemoney pool to cover the three new weekly meetings which means that there will be no reduction in any prizemoney across all of the current racing program.

This expanded program will accommodate the increase in Victoria’s available population of racing dogs, which includes those which would normally have raced interstate but have been unable to do so because of the border closures. And the extra meetings will help us offset some of the impact of the closure of TAB retail outlets because of COVID-19 which has reduced our overall revenues.

Growing our racing calendar at the moment is particularly important given that we have many new customers to greyhound racing, This will continue as one of GRV’s key priorities for the coming years. By spreading our fixed costs across more events, we will generate more wagering revenue to reinvest in more prizemoney, more jobs, improved club facilities and increased marketing to attract new customers.

Secondly, and very importantly, the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Victoria means we must keep strictly following biosecurity protocols and keep working together to keep racing going. In line with the Victorian Government’s directive, all participants, regardless of where they are based, must wear masks or other face coverings when in public anywhere in Victoria.

Masks are now also mandatory at all race meetings, trial sessions and coursing activities statewide. Although masks are provided by GRV at the clubs, it would be helpful if participants bring their own. I also ask that everyone travel directly to and from tracks and use club food and beverage options onsite or take their own rather than visiting local towns or suburbs. So please stay safe and stay aware so we can stay racing.

Speaking of racing, I am very pleased to announce $1 million to fund free pen trials, arm trials and post-race trials at all 13 Victorian clubs from the start of this month. This will help ease financial pressures faced by participants and improve welfare outcomes. The free trials program has

been developed in collaboration with Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV) and will be administered and managed by GCV and club managers. We anticipate that free trials will provide more opportunities for dogs to experience racing conditions and so lead to a reduction in injuries. GRV will be continually researching this issue throughout the free trials program. GRV and GCV will also review on a monthly basis how the program is working to make sure all participants are able to access free trials. Additionally, the program will give clubs the opportunity to employ more local people in helping manage the trials and carrying out associated track maintenance.

In other exciting news the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) will soon announce a proposal for a new straight track at The Meadows following a detailed feasibility study of the proposed site, The proposed straight track will be a further boost for safe racing in Victoria and allow Victoria to present an expanded racing program across 14 tracks instead of the current 13. Over the coming months, MGRA will provide detailed information on the new track and when it is expected to be operational.

I am also pleased to announce that, following a call for expressions of interest, the GRV Board has approved MGRA as the new administrator for the Healesville Greyhound Racing Association from 1 August this year. Sandown Greyhound Racing Club has done a great job of administrating Healesville over the past few years but it now feels it has to focus on other priorities like its new rearing property. MGRA will bring its own very strong capabilities in areas like general administration and track maintenance to support Cynthia O’Brien and her team at Healesville and I look forward to a very productive partnership between the two clubs.

Finally, I’d like to note that despite the challenges we have been facing, the sport has enjoyed an exceptionally high standard of racing in recent months with some great runs by Victorian dogs both here and interstate. Once again, I thank all participants and club and race day staff for working together under trying conditions to deliver some of the best greyhound racing action in Australia, if not the world.

Greyhound research; can you help?Greyhound owners and trainers are sought to assist with an important research project, being led by the University of Melbourne, into ‘what age do female greyhounds have their first and subsequent seasons’?

The team is looking for owners and trainers who are willing to provide information about their female greyhounds, particularly those that have not been in season. Some of the greyhounds currently involved in the study have become unavailable and new greyhounds are required.

The study is only open to all female greyhounds that do not receive any medication to stop then coming into season. The data currently produced from the study indicates that the average age of first season is 24 months old.

The information obtained from this study will help owners and trainers plan the use of medications to control seasons and to develop new products to help control seasons which have no side effects.

Participants in this research have little obligation.

All that is required is information on the age of your females and notification when they do come into season. Additionally, the researchers will contact you from time to time to ascertain if any of your females have been in season.

The study is being conducted by final year student Shirley Yu and overseen by Dr Natali Krekeler, senior lecturer in reproduction and Dr. Ray Ferguson, Monash Veterinary Clinic.

If you could assist the program, please contact Dr Ray Ferguson [email protected].

Ballarat’s Enduro extravaganza!The forward-thinking Ballarat GRC launches an exciting initiative next month – the Enduro (545m & 660m) / Tier 3 Cup (545m) series.

In a proactive move, the club’s Racing Advisory Committee has received approval and support from GRV to schedule three weeks of 545m and 660m preludes, with the fourth week being a gala finals’ night.

Sheldon Hamilton, on behalf of the BGRC RAC, says the progressive approach is designed to foster middle-distance and staying racing in a month-long series rather than one-off special events.

He adds that the Enduro will bring together some of Victoria’s finest middle-distance and staying exponents during August.

Adding greater interest and support for Tier 3 racing, the club has also scheduled the first-ever Tier 3 Cup and Consolation.

“We may be the only club in Australia that has ever offered and provided opportunity for 20 races greater than 545m over three weeks and then a finals’ night – 2 x 660m; 2 x 545m; 2 x 545m Tier 3 Cup; and 0-4 GDR 660m.” Hamilton said.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORTBY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDSThe Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine. In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

Retiring greyhounds to a third partyFor the last several months, I have discussed the importance of participants providing GRV with accurate and complete contact details when rehoming their greyhounds to third parties (i.e. anyone other than the racing owner). GRV checks every single third-party retirement and for those that are self-reported using FastTrack, we contact and ensure we speak to the new owner to confirm the retirement and the new owner’s details. It is also critical that participants comply with the Code of Practice rehoming requirements. Before you rehome your dog, please obtain a copy of the Participant Rehoming Guide and the Rehoming Pack from your local club or online at https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rehoming/rehoming-pack/. This package enables participants to comply with their rehoming requirements under the Code and provide GRV with complete rehoming information for quicker retirement management. When handing over the greyhound to the new owner, it is much easier to have them fill in their details and sign the form at the time, as this eliminates the need for GRV to contact both the racing owner and the new owner.

GRV is a licensed Microchip Registry and must comply with laws that will not allow the dog to be transferred into the new owner’s name until the new owner confirms that they have the dog. If the rehoming form is not completely correctly, GRV will need to contact the new owner to verify their correct details:

■ Name (first and last name)

■ Full address (including suburb, state and postcode)

■ Phone number

■ Email address

■ Alternate contact person name and phone number (in case the dog is found wandering and the owner cannot be contacted)

Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been confirmed, the greyhound’s status will change to ‘Retired’, it will move to the participant’s ‘My Retired Dogs’ list, and you will be advised of the change via email.

RTEarly socialisation – preparing your greyhound pups for a successful racing career Breeding utilisation rate, or racing success, is a common topic in the greyhound racing industry. Since 2015, GRV has worked hard with participants to improve breeding utilisation to better balance the number of pups born with the racing needs of the industry. Most participants know genetics is not the only factor that influences racing success; early socialisation and rearing environments are just as, if not more, important. A poorly socialised greyhound is likely to find many things challenging. They will struggle to adapt to a kennel environment, or any different environment or situation. Their fear response can interfere with their motivation to chase, making them difficult to educate, and even if successfully educated, distraction at the racetrack is likely to impact on their racing success. Ultimately the greyhound will be more difficult to re-home.

GRV has several educational booklets to help breeders and rearers to grow the most successful racing greyhounds including:

■ Socialisation greyhounds for racing success - https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/GRV-Socialising-for-Success-191219.pdf; and

■ A series of booklets on breeding successful racing greyhounds, specifically:

☐ Booklet 2: Developing a Breeding Program – Understanding Genetics https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/GRV-Breeder-booklets-Booklet-2.pdf

☐ Booklet 3: Starting a Breeding Program https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/GRV-Breeder-booklets-Booklet-3.pdf

☐ Booklet 8: Care and Early Development https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/GRV-Breeder-booklets-Booklet-8.pdf

If you want to know more about improving your breeding and racing success, please take a look at these booklets.

VaccinationsNow that it is mandatory under the Code for all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination, now is a good time to be vaccinating for Kennel Cough if not already done so this year. Please speak to your veterinarian or GRV about the most appropriate Kennel Cough vaccination because there are three different options (intra-nasal, oral and injectable).

GAP Update GRV would like to thank participants for their patience during the challenging times that GAP has faced over the last 4-5 months. GAP has now returned to regular pre-entry assessment sessions across the state where clubs offer facilities that allow COVID-19 safety restrictions to be properly implemented. However, this could change with changes to movement restrictions imposed by the Government, but you will be notified if this is the case. If you want to book dogs into GAP, please contact Racing Services as you have always done. If you are considering GAP for a greyhound, or you envisage a need in the future, please book it in early to avoid the waiting time when they need it. Booking in early doesn’t commit you, but it does give you an option if you need it at short notice.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, entry into GAP is booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing [email protected].

Please note due to COVID-19, pre-entry assessments schedules are constantly under review and subject to change. GRV appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding.

To be eligible for acceptance into GAP your greyhound must:

■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS* described on this page and given at least 10 days before entry; and

■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to entry (‘wind-down period’). More information is available through Member Services or at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.

The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100

Pre-entry Assessment email: [email protected]

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTSFrom 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations:

■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and

■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

* Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. Please contact GRV if you would like more information.

Sale Greyhound Racing Club Manager ProfilePeter JohnstonPeter Johnston grew up in Bairnsdale and attended Gippsland Grammar in Sale.Pete started in hotel management when he left school but went back to university to study farm management and wool classing, his vocation for 12 years. Peter, his wife Sue and 3 daughters moved to Scone in Hunter Valley (opposite of a sea change) where he managed clubs for 10 years before moving back to Bairnsdale. Peter's favourite place to holiday is Merimbula and he gets there as often as he can. His two great loves are his 3 grandchildren and the Geelong Cats. He is very highly regarded in the local football circles as President at WyYung Football netball club, with his proudest highlight in 2015 with 9 flags: all netball teams and 3 football teams. We are very lucky to have had Pete manage the Sale Greyhound club for the past 16 years, but please do not accept tips from him.

FEATURED CLUB

History, with Neil Brown Without any doubt the greatest greyhound to come from Sale is the mighty Temlee. Not only a racetrack superstar, the brindle powerhouse was to rewrite the record books in a stunning stud career, with a contribution that places him close to the best of all time. An incredible turn of events was behind the reason Temlee was whelped at all. On a trip to Tony Duke's breeding property, in search of a well-bred brood bitch, Sale greyhound racing identity Tom Davidson bought Temora Lee for $800, but due to injury she never raced in Victoria. Not long after the purchase Davidson passed away but prior to his death he requested his greyhounds be humanely put down. Fortunately, family members could not bring themselves to have this done and gave Temora Lee to friend and former Sale club President Barry Bailey. He was to choose unproven stud dog Tivoli Chief as the sire and although the litter was registered in the name of Mary Davidson, Bailey paid the stud fee and whelped down the litter. The late Ray Hocken brought Temlee for $135 and gave him to Sale railway worker Frank Cray to rear and train at his Sale property.Early on, Temlee became sick with a bad bout of Hepatitis and distemper, and Cray treated the pup indoors for a number of weeks. If it wasn’t for that intensive care he would have been lost. The reward was the first time he trialled after breaking in was at Sale, Temlee ran just outside the track record.

Throughout this global pandemic, our dogs have remained our priority. We have kept our promise to man's best friend, and ensured they continue to do what they love, and that is run.

Every step of the way, our trainers and our dogs have been there for each other, whether it’s racing, bringing puppies into the world or finding them their forever homes they have been on this journey together.

It’s a dog’s life - our dogs and our trainers will continue to be our focus and our priority. See the new GCV video; Racing to Rehoming: https://www.facebook.com/thirteenvicclubs
