Introduction
Pagan frolics featuring communal forest feasts, enticing aromas wafting from bubbling cauldrons luring folks from afar… food was and remains an integral part of the Art Magical.
Food is a malleable art form that affords infinite means of creative expression. It’s a spoke in the Wheel of the Year: Each Sabbat celebration has cuisine correspondences that emphasize each season’s unique bounty. The promise of edible delights motivates us to persevere through difficult days, to land softly amongst loved ones at dusk, and heals us when we’re sick, bone-cold, or weary.
Science and society often play catch-up to what Pagans have known for millennia — most recently, the “proof” that family bonding is cemented in those who cook and eat together (reference America frozen food company Stouffer’s® advertising campaign implying that eating their processed products could reduce drug abuse).
The ability to cook from scratch, for oneself or others, is an important survival skill. Many take pride in being able to make something luscious out of nothing, such as ‘stone soup’. Yet, modernity challenges every cook’s repertoire: Rising food costs, scarcity, irradiation, genetic modification, and ever-changing packaging, preservation, and ways to prepare food keep us
off-balance. Stores offer seeming dazzling arrays of choices, but a cursory glance reveals all as full of harmful salt and sugar.
Television shows further frustrate, offering only two extremes — slap-dash personalization of processed foods, or pressuring viewers to use exotic, expensive ingredients. It’s enough to sap all magic from mealtimes!
Wholesome food slow-cooked to comfort, fill, and heal is the way to go. From cooking complete meals in a cauldron, to making your own flavored schnapps, this e-cookbook shows how anyone can make hearty and scrumptious meals that will get rave reviews.
Illustrated with evocative woodcuts, these recipes range from centuries old, to modern takes on perennial favorites — all sure to delight all. No salt recipes and low to no-sugar treats promote goodly digestion and their herb and spice-rich goodliness tastes great!
Cauldron cookery, herbal aphrodisiacs, decadent desserts (blueberry hazelnut puff), croissant centerpieces, chilled meals (margarita gazpacho), elegant entrées (maple syrup pecan pork chops), luscious drinks (flaming glogg), crock-pot creations (mushroom venison roast) — the best of the past to serve as a present repast!
Witches see the practical and spiritual aspects of sustenance: We depend on a wide variety of life forms to thrive, and our bodies, in turn, host small life forms. Ultimately, we’re symbiotic with, and stewards of, everything from mighty marlin to escargot.
In the folkways worldview, all life is holy, so everyone’s food choices are accorded equal respect, from omnivores to vegans. After all, a grain of rice may be sentient, has its soul.
Oh Queen most secret, Bless this food unto the nourishment of our bodies — Bestowing Health, Wealth, Peace, Strength, and Joy,
And that perfection of Love, which is eternal Happiness.
Such is the prayer Pagans intone prior to ingesting or imbibing, for we revere the sacrifice required to sustain us. We acknowledge our reliance on the beneficence of the Gods, and then put drink and morsels into a libation bowl and leave our offering outside in humble thanks.
Magical cooking ranges from stirring clock or counter-clockwise to affect a specific mystic goal, to planting, harvesting, drying, and using particular herbs to lure love, luck, health, or plenty, and using natural ingredients to achieve an altered state, promote fertility, or heal wounds
and ailments. For full treatments on these skills, read Kitchen Witchery: Stir Up Something Goodly and many spells involving herbs, edible flowers, and foods in The Goodly.
For now, revel in the compliments you’ll receive from making these recipes, and use the Food Gifts section to share your newfound food secrets with others!
May you never hunger. May you never thirst.
