4. Harsh weather including sun and wind can damage hair. Look for products with a built-in hair sunscreen or wear a fun & fashionable hat when outdoors to protect your hair from mother nature’s damaging elements. Just back from vacation? consider a deep moisture treatment to replenish and hydrate your hair, helping it recover.

5. while hair treatments such as coloring, chemical straightening, hair extensions and braids are trendy and popular, these can lead to hair damage. Try giving your hair a break from excessive styling so it can be natural and healthy.

6. Try a little vinegar. I was pretty skeptical about this at first but once I tried it I was hooked. after shampoo and conditioner, pour a glass of apple cider vinegar over your hair then rinse. when it dries, it will add shine and softness to your hair.

1. avoid washing your hair daily as this can strip your hair of its natural oils. By washing your hair every other day, you allow nature to take control. use warm water rather than hot. Like the sun, hot water can dry out your hair when washing and rinsing.

2. avoid breakage by using a wide-tooth-comb and sulfate-free detangler when combing out wet hair. always brush in sections starting at the ends in order to avoid breaking and damaging your hair. when the hair dries, continue with a natural brush (such as a boar bristle brush) so that natural oils are more evenly distributed.

3. when you blow dry your hair, use the coolest setting to avoid your hair shaft reaching the boiling point while wet. Excessive heat leads to brittle, broken strands that may result in bald patches. Take it easy with flat irons, curling irons and other heating tools as well.

1. commit to a well-balanced diet. Dietary protein is especially important as it provides essential amino acids that stimulate new hair growth and add strength. also, foods high in sulfur such as lean meats, egg yolks, seafood, beans, nuts and many cruciferous veggies are well known to make your hair strong, long and glossy.

2. Increase barley in your diet. It is high in vitamin B and Niacin-both key ingredients for growing hair.

3. Increase your intake of avocados, nuts, and other seeds. They are high in vitamin E, also a necessary and key ingredient in growing long locks.

4. add more fish to your diet. fish has essential oils and other ingredients that help grow long hair.

5. Stay away from alcohol. alcohol depletes your body of critical minerals such as Zinc and Iron, resulting in hair loss. alcohol also causes dehydration, which can result in excess hair breakage and shedding.

6. consistently work some gelatin into your diet. Bone broth or gelatin powder are two of the best options. gelatin is largely composed of the amino acids glycine and proline which many people don’t consume in adequate amounts. These amino acids are needed for proper skin, hair and nail growth.

1. Be in tune with your body. few people realize that thyroid and hormonal imbalances create unhealthy hair. gastrointestinal issues do too. So if you find yourself not being able to grow your hair to the desired length, consider getting these checked by your doctor.

2. Know the side effects of your prescription medications. antidepressants, blood thinners, vitamin a supplements, arthritis medications, gout medications, heart and blood pressure medications, and birth control pills often list hair loss as a side effect. If you suspect your medication is affecting your hair, ask your doctor for a possible alternative.

3. Do your best to keep your stress level under control. while this may be easier said than done, it can take up to 8 months for hair regrowth to start following a stressful event. Stress is often the culprit in excessive shedding. If you are going through a stressful time develop a balanced regimen based on the tips provided here and stick to it.

4. vary your workout. while exercise is key to a healthy life, regular weight training may cause hair loss due to increased testosterone levels. a 45-minute weight training session can increase testosterone levels by 25%. as testosterone levels drop post-workout, the hormone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which shrinks hair follicles and roots. In women this can cause thinning hair.

5. Stop the crash diets! crash diets carry both long and short term health risks. The most common short term risk is nutritional deficiency, which results in a shortage of essential amino acids and vitamins ultimately leading to hair loss.
