Colors evoke many sensations, includinga perception of being warm or cool.Warm colors encourage conversationand play: They’re the colors of a sunset,a ripe orange, budding daffodils, or acopper pot. Cool colors invite relaxationand thought. Cool hues are inspired bywater, sky, violets, and silvery tones.

modern edge

To give a big room a more intimate feel, paint it incolors that make the walls seem to advance towardyou. These colors include red, gold, orange, andbrown. To help a small room seem larger, paint it incolors that make the walls appear to recede, such asblue, green, or violet.

These dependable formulas were used effectively inthe pair of rooms shown here. To create a cozy, cocoonlike bedroom, the walls were painted withthe cheery, glowing Butter Up. Because the adjacentsunroom is tiny, its walls were done in WheatGrass, a green tone that visually expands the space.

Another advantage these Modern Edge colorsprovide is longevity. They’re playful enough for a12-year-old occupant’s youthful imagination, butthey’re also sophisticated enough to grow up withher, and adapt to her maturing tastes.

Natural light and the direction of exposure affectthe way a color looks. Think about whether yourroom has a sunny southern or less-bright northernexposure, and take into account the number andsize of your windows. As a rule, a color willappear one or two shades darker on your wallthan it did on the paint chip.

The corner bedroom shown on these pages wasbuilt with many windows, and has two exposures.Because it basks in so much sunlight, it’s an idealchoice for showing off the deep, rich colorsof the Sophisticated Serenity palette.

Soothing, yes. Sedate? Never. These colors let youkeep your cool, without ever losing your sense ofstyle. When you choose paint colors for a room, consider your existing furniture. You maywant to select a color inspired by a favoritefabric or antique. Sherwin-Williamsexperts suggest trying out a prospectivepaint choice next to your belongings topreview its effect. For example, a brightturquoise wall hue might have made thesubtle, moss-tone upholsteries in thislibrary look faded or dowdy. GentleHalcyon Green sets them off quite nicely.

Warm, spicy hues make anyone feel at home. They’re beautifullysoft and anything but boring. To enhance the welcoming air ofthis fireplace-centered library in a century-old farmhouse, we’vechosen four colors from the Gracious Warmth palette card #3: walls: Halcyon Green SW 6213ceiling: Ancestral Gold SW 6407shelving fronts: Biscuit SW 6112bookcase interiors: Red Bay SW 6321

exteriors RanchJust after World War II,newlyweds across the UnitedStates began building ranchhouses—rambling, one-story structures with attachedgarages. These houses characterized much of the building boom of the1950s and 1960s, and are still being built today. A ranch’s exterior sidingoften combines clapboards with shingles or brick. ColonialColonial is perhaps the most enduring of American house styles.

Gracious, symmetrically laid out houses first appeared in thiscountry in the 1700s: In New England, they usually were facedwith shingles or clapboards, while in the South early settlers used

bricks. In the late 1800s, Colonial-stylehouses became popular again, and therevival born at that time has never completelydisappeared—many brand-new houses stillare constructed in this traditional style. VictorianVictorian homes are sometimes painted in a whimsical

and colorful manner, inspired by the “painted ladies” inSan Francisco. In most people’s minds, these houses, spanning most of the 19th century, are characterized bymany gables, wraparound porches with turned posts, lacy“gingerbread” or fancy cast-iron trim, and even theoccasional turret. Victorian exteriors call for multicolorschemes, left:body: Blissful Blue SW 6527trim: Minuet White SW 6819accents: Commodore SW 6524, Obi Lilac SW 6556For historic color options, see the exterior PreservationPalette® Victorian collection.
