Itineraries / ItinérairesBelow we present three routes starting from the tourist information office.Nous présentons trois itinéraires qui partent de l’Office du Tourisme.
HERMITAGES ROUTEROUTE DES ERMITES
Distance: 11 km. / Approximate time: 3 hoursThe tour begins by heading towards the coast, passing next to the Santa Catalina, San Cristóbaland San Esteban hermitages, all examples of popular architecture of great importance asmeeting points and centres of spirituality for the initial inhabitants of Bakio, who were spreadout in different districts.The road takes us to San Pelaio, a Romanesque 12th century hermitage which is the mostimportant historic and artistic site in Bakio. After the tour, we have the opportunity to visitSan Juan de Gaztelugatxe or to continue along the coastline, enjoying the magnificent viewsof the cliffs, down to the beach of Bakio.A walk along the beach and around the town will take us back, down the main road, to thestarting point.
Distance : 11km. / Temps approximatif: 3 heuresCommencez le parcours en vous dirigeant vers la côte et en passant juste à côté des ermitesde Santa Catalina, San Cristóbal et San Esteban, toutes exemple d’une architecture populaire,importants centres de réunion et de spiritualité pour les premiers habitants de Bakio, disperséssur différents quartiers.Le chemin nous rapproche de San Pelaio, ermite romane du XIIème siècle, l’élément de plusgrande valeur artistique et historique de Bakio. Après la visite, le parcours nous offre le choixde visiter San Juan de Gaztelugatxe ou de continuer par la côte, profitant ainsi des vuesmerveilleuses depuis les falaises, jusqu’à la plage de Bakio.Une promenade sur la plage et dans le village nous ramènera, par la voie principale, jusqu’ànotre point de départ.
PALACES AND VILLAS ROUTEROUTE DES PALAIS ET DES VILLAS
Distance: 4.5 km / Approximate time: 1 ½ hoursOur walk takes us through meadows and orchards, to the Santa Ursula hermitage in the Urkizaurdistrict. From here, a road slopes down towards the coast, taking us next to the beachfront CasaLafita, a innovative example of 1960s architecture. We shall continue our tour of the town whilsttaking in an exceptional group of sumptuous mansions of different styles, built at the beginningof the 20th century, when privileged Bilbao folk took up holiday homes in Bakio.
Distance : 4.5 km / Temps approximatif : 1h30Une promenade entre champs et jardins potagers vers l’ermite de Santa Ursula, dans le quartierde Urkizaur. De ce point, nous suivrons une piste à flanc de colline vers la côte, pour descendresur la plage vers la Maison Lafita, échantillon de l’architecture d’avant-garde des années 60.Nous reviendrons par le village tout en découvrant de somptueuses villas de différents styles,bâties au début du XXème siècle, au moment où Bakio devenait un lieu de villégiature estivaledes classes privilégiées de Bilbao.
INLAND BAKIOLE BAKIO INTÉRIEUR
Distance: 9 km / Approximate time: 2 ½ hoursWe shall head towards the district of Basigo, where we find the parish of Ntra. Sra de laAsunción, and the magnificent Baroque Elespuru and Hormaza palaces, set amongst meadowsand vineyards, which can be accessed by walking across the valley. Here our journey descendsthrough the woods of the district of Arzalde to visit the Romanesque hermitage of San Miguel.Finally we shall cross the River Estepona to head towards the district of Zubiaur, where wewill find a beautiful series of popular architecture including the Tabernazar, the oldest countryhouse in Bakio. Finally the road takes us back to the starting point past the hermitages of SanMartín and Santa Catalina and the former mill-foundry of Bekoerrota-Bengolea.
Distance : 9 km / Temps approximatif : 2h30Nous nous dirigerons vers le quartier Basigo, où se trouvent l’église de Notre Dame de l’Assomption,et les magnifiques Palais Barroques d’Elespuru et Hormaza, situés dans un environnement ruralde prés et de vignobles, par lesquels nous descendrons au fond de la vallée. Ici, le chemin remonteentre les bois vers le quartier d’Arzalde pour visiter l’ermite romane de San Miguel.La dernière partie de notre promenade nous fera traverser le fleuve Estepona pour nous dirigervers le qurtier de Zubiaur, bel ensemble d’architecture populaire où se trouve Tavernezar, le«ÊcaseríoÊ» le plus ancien de Bakio. Finalement, le chemin nous mène qu point de départ parles ermites de San Martín et Santa Catalina ainsi que l’ancien moulin-forgerie de Bekoerrota-Bengolea.

IntroductionThis singular municipality, located on the Basque Biscay coast, is the perfect placeto stop and enjoy the privileged natural surroundings, a combination of rural andtourist environments, a mix of traditional and modern.Its coastline and mild microclimate provide us with a variety of seafood, fruit andvegetables, both native and Mediterranean (fish, barnacles, peppers, asparagus,citrus tomatoes, etc). All of these should be washed down with our young, fruitywine, “El Txakoli”, which has the Denomination of Origin Bizkaiko Txakolina.
The BeachStretching over 1 km, it is the longest beach in Vizcaya. A promenade allows us to admireit in its entirety, whilst the views from the Askada observation point are amongst the mostbeautiful in Bakio.Having already been awarded the blue flag many years ago, this municipality wished to goeven further and, in 2004, was awarded the ISO 9001 Quality and 14001 EnvironmentCertificates, accrediting it as one of the highest quality beaches in the province.Being a tourist destination, it is in summer that Bakio receives most visitors, who come tosunbathe, swim, practice volleyball, football, canoeing, etc. The beach is very much opento the sea, making its waters the perfect place to enjoy surfing throughout the year. Peopleinterested in this sport can take classes, or enjoy important European and WorldChampionships.
La PlageD’une longueur de 1 km, c’est la plus longue de toute la Biscaye. Une promenade nouspermet d’admirer tout son parcours et depuis l’observatoire d’Askada, de diviser un despaysages les plus beaux de Bakio.Après avoir obtenu le drapeau bleu pendant des années, cette commune a souhaité allerplus loin encore et depuis 2004, elle possède le certificat ISO 9001 de qualité et 14001 del’environnement, l’accréditant comme l’une des plages de meilleure qualité de la région.En tant que destination touristique, c’est en été que se concentrent à Bakio la plupart desvisiteurs pour profiter de la plage, de la mer, du soleil, pour pratiquer le volley le football,le canoë, etc. En outre, sa grande ouverture sur la mer la projette comme l’un des meilleursparadis du surf pendant toute l’année. Les amateurs de ce sport peuvent recevoir des classesd’apprentissage ou profiter d’importants championnats européens et même mondiaux.

El TxakoliTxakoli has been cultivated in Bakio since time immemorial. This is due to its privilegedlocation in a valley surrounded by small hills, next to the sea and favoured by a mildmicroclimate, with green, fertile lands which produce high-quality horticultural products.Although it is produced in countless "Caseríos", there are currently only three producersapproved by the Regulation Board with its Denomination of Origin “Bizkaiko Txakolina”.Guided visits to these cellars can be booked at the tourist information office.The harvest is collected every year on 19th March, the Day of San José, in a festive actincluding tasting sessions and the possibility to purchase the produce.
Le TxakoliDepuis la nuit des temps, le txakoli a été cultivé à Bakio. Grâce à une situation privilégiéeau creux d’une vallée entourée de petites collines en bord de mer, favorisée par un douxmicroclimat, dotée d’une terre verte et fertile, berceau de produits horticoles d’une excellentequalité. Outre la production dans de nombreux “caseríos” (maison rurale basque), troiscaves se partagent aujourd’hui l’inscription au Conseil Régulateur de l’Appellation d’Origine“Bizkaiko Txakolina”. A l’Office du Tourisme, vous pourrez demander une des nombreusesvisites guidées des caves.La vendange se présente tous les ans le 19 mars, à la Saint Joseph, à l’occasion d’une fêteoù l’on peut déguster et acheter ce vin.
