Words You Need To Know

1. Ratio: is a comparison of two numbers by division.

Example: The ratio that compares 4 to 16 can be

written in several ways.

4 to 16 4 out of 16 4:16

Ratios can be expressed as fractions. In this case, the fraction is 4/16.

You can write the fraction 4/16 as 2/8 and also as 1/4.

2. Equivalent fractions: fractions that name the same

number.

3. Simplest form: when the numerator and the denominator have a GCF of 1.

Hint: To put fractions in simplest form,

reduce the fraction to lowest terms.

Example: 4/10 in simplest form is 2/5.

because both 4 and 10 can be divided by 2.

4 divided by 2 is 2, and 10 divided by 2 is 5.

Let’s Practice.

14/18 = 7/9 because both 14 and 18 can be divided by what number? 2, 3, or 6.

30/35 = 6/7 because they can be divided by what number? 10, 2, or, 5

Sometimes you will have to find a missing part of a fraction. When you do this you are finding equivalent fractions.

Example: 1/2 is equal to ?/8

HINT: to solve this problem find what number you can multiply 2 by to get 8. In this problem the number is 4.

Then simply multiply the 1 by 4 to find the missing number.

2 x 4 = 8 so 1 x 4 = 4 and the new equivalent fraction is

1/2 is equal to 4/8.
