Underground water mains that supply fire protection systems are vulnerable to contaminants when dirt, rocks, bird nests, oyster shells, sticks, and even workers’ tools find their way into the pipe during installation. Every attempt should be made to remove these potential obstructions before connecting a pipe to a fire protection system or hydrant. One method to increase the reliability of underground water supplies is to perform a controlled flush, which is intended to remove small objects and identify obstructions that may require the pipe to be excavated and inspected.

Candle Fire Safety

The warm glow of candles can help set the mood, but did you know that a fire caused by candles is reported in the United States every 34 minutes? The majority of candle fires result from human error and negligence. Candle fires and the damage they can cause are preventable with these simple tips: • If possible, avoid using lighted candles. • If you must use candles, place them in sturdy holders. • Keep candles away from children and pets. • Extinguish candles after each use. • Never leave burning candles unattended.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 24 provides the following options for flushing underground mains:

1. Flushing at the hydraulically calculated water demand flow rate of the system, including any hose requirements. 2. Flushing at the maximum flow rate available to the system under fire conditions. 3. Flushing to provide a velocity of 10 ft/sec (3.1 m/sec) in accordance with the following table:

OSHA Standard Requires Educational Program on theUse of Fire Extinguishers

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) recognizes the importance of education and training for portable fire extinguishers. OSHA Standard 1910.157(g)(1) sets a specific requirement for employers who provide portable fire extinguishers for employee use in the workplace. This standard requires those employers to provide an educational program to familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with the initial stage of firefighting.

When fires are extinguished within the first three minutes… • Loss of life is minimal. 94% of all deaths from 1994-2002 structure fires resulted from fires that spread beyond the object of origin.* • Property damage is minimal. 93% of all direct property damage in 1999-2002 structure fires resulted from fires that spread beyond the object of origin.* *Fire Protection Handbook, 20th Edition, NFPA Table 3.1.14

SimplexGrinnell delivers important new value as a leader in fire and Life-Safety – an added layer of liability protection to help customers in the event of an act of terrorism. In offering this benefit, we are taking advantage of a landmark federal law designed to protect our country, our citizens and our critical assets with advanced anti-terrorism technologies.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) awarded SimplexGrinnell SAFETY Act (Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies) Certification and Designation coverage for its security, fire and Life-Safety systems integration services. To achieve SAFETY Act certification, SimplexGrinnell passed the rigorous DHS review demonstrating that its services can deter, defend against, identify, respond to, or mitigate an act of terrorism.

The SAFETY Act is an important federal law that encourages the creation and sale of anti-terror products and services to help protect the nation’s citizens. It was enacted by Congress following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002. The purpose of the SAFETY Act is to “ensure that the threat of liability does not deter potential manufacturers or sellers of anti-terrorism technologies from developing and commercializing technologies that could save lives.”

SimplexGrinnell’s SAFETY Act certification provides significant liability protections to the company and its customers, subcontractors, vendors and suppliers. If a customer using SimplexGrinnell’s security, fire and Life-Safety systems integration services suffers damages from a homeland terrorist attack, that business or institution can be given legal liability protections against civil claims.

The SAFETY Act certification covers our array of services for fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire suppression, integrated security, emergency communications, special hazards, nurse call, sound and communications and monitoring. The coverage extends across our full portfolio, from enterprise-wide, networked solutions to testing, inspection, maintenance, repair and central monitoring services.

For more information on the SAFETY Act, visit , or contact your SimplexGrinnell service representative.
