Solution LOBO (Library Online Basic Orientation) First launched in
1997, replaced workbook approach. Mandatory component of ENG 101, a
required course meeting the Writing, Speaking, & Information
Literacy General Education Requirement. Failed to address adult
learning needs. Linear structure & conceptual focus. Not
flexible, not easily maintainable, not assessable. Redesigned and
relaunched in Fall 2002.

from Stakeholders From Students: I found the LOBO tutorial to be
very helpful in many different ways. It was easy to follow,
understand, and use. The entire program was very systematic,
completing one topic at a time before going on to the next. It
showed you how to do multiple things within the library system, as
well as on the web and in various different media groups (such as
newspapers, journals, and websites).
Slide 11

from Stakeholders From Instructors: I am quite pleased with the
program and even found it helpful in my own studies. I know some
students go back to LOBO to do more researchI think the content is
great. I especially like the focus on evaluating web-sites. I LOVE
lobo. Some students wept with joy when they saw the Build a
Citation page.

Simple Strategies for an Effective Online Tutorial About LOBO
Labs I participated in my first LOBO lab on Friday. Cindy [another
librarian] helped two students while I helped one. I just want to
say it was one of the best instructional situations I've been in as
a librarian. It worked like it was supposed to on paper -- the
student really did know a baseline of concepts from having done
LOBO (what's a database, what's a catalog, Boolean, etc.) and just
wanted some help putting it all together for his particular paper.
He and I talked about his topic and who we thought might be writing
about it. It was a real conversation about research, not just a
tutorial on search mechanics. Bravo to whoever conceived of this
format. -- Librarian
Slide 62
Simple Strategies for an Effective Online Tutorial Integrating
LOBO That is amazingly helpful! I realized something from reading
this info. LOBO is designed by researchers (librarians) who have
real, solid, comprehensive training in how to conduct research. I,
on the other hand, have experience in conducting formal research
for my English courses (for which I had only one research methods
course--the instructor's directions were Go find it) and informal
experience looking around for things I'm interested in. I don't
think like a real trained researcher, which was part of why I
wasn't sure how to integrate LOBO into the course. This helps me
see the bigger picture and I'll be able to present it more
effectively to my students now
Slide 63
Simple Strategies for an Effective Online Tutorial Integrating
LOBO The other piece is that the schedule you've set up uses LOBO
as much more of a structural component than the way I was assigning
it. My approach has been to help students with it some, but to
primarily assign it as a series of out-of-class activities, in the
context of their assignments. Students were viewing it like an
extra thing because I, inadvertently, was presenting it that way.
Using and demonstrating it in class as a basis for lessons makes
much better sense. --Instructor
