Kinds of Sentences and Their PunctuationA common weakness in writing is the lack of varied sentences. Becoming aware of the different

kinds of sentences can help you vary the sentences in your writing.

The most effective writing uses a variety of the sentence types explained below.

A sentence may be one of four kinds, depending upon the number and type(s) ofclauses it contains.

    Review:

An independent clausecontains a subject, a verb, and a complete thought.

A dependent clausecontains a subject and a verb, but no complete thought.

If you can write a correct sentence, then you can write a correctparagraph and a correct essay.

Therefore, you just have to master the four types of sentences.

This sentence has acomplete thought. You

    understand what it means.

    &. S#P"! S!$T!$-! has one independent clause.

    has the most basic elements that make it a sentence% a sub'ect, a /erb,

    and a completed thought.

Punctuation note: N commas separate twocompound elements (subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, subjective complement, etc.) in a simple sentence.

!0amples of simple sentencesinclude the following%

    &. 1oe waited for the train.21oe2 3 sub'ect, 2waited2 3 /erb

    *. The train was late.2The train2 3 sub'ect, 2was2 3 /erb

. looked for #ary and Samantha at the bus station.

    22 3 sub'ect, 2looked2 3 /erb

    4. #ary and Samantha took the bus.2#ary and Samantha2 3 compound sub'ect, 2took2 3 /erb

    5. #ary and Samantha arri/ed at the bus station early but waited until noon forthe bus.2#ary and Samantha2 3 compound sub'ect, 2arri/ed2 and 2waited2 3compound /erb

The use of compound sub'ects, compound /erbs, prepositional phrases (such as 2atthe bus station2), and other elements help lengthen simple sentences, but simplesentences often are short. The use of too many simple sentences can make writing2choppy2 and can pre/ent the writing from 6owing smoothly.

7 simple sentence can also be referred to as an independent clause. t is referredto as 2independent2 because, while it might be part of a compound or comple0sentence, it can also stand by itself as a complete sentence.
