What happens one ordinary evening when some work colleagues decide to go out for drinks? Sparks just might fly!

This is what happened to Keomi and Luke, even though they had been working at the same company for years - they had gone virtually unnoticed to each other…until that evening.

According to Keomi, “After a few glasses of wine, one of us needed to go to the bathroom, at which point we realized that our legs had become intertwined under the bar stools. It was only after several months and coy looks at each other at work that the first tangible “move” was made. And as they say, the rest is history.”

After a year of dating, Keomi and Luke went on an anniversary picnic date, under a pink poui tree, in the Queens’ Park Savannah.

One year after that, they were planning their engagement photo shoot. The look they were after was natural and casual.

Keomi recounts, “Luke had the brilliant idea of re-creating our favourite picnic date, so we used Pinterest to research ideas. The Saturday before the shoot, we gathered our picnic props- such as blankets, fruits, a bottle of champagne, glasses, picnic basket, cheese and crackers, a baguette and tea cups. Luke also packed a table and chair set and his guitar. We probably went a little overboard!

When we got to the destination, Julie Charlett, our Photographer, remarked that she had never seen any other couple walk with that many props! We chose a location in Paramin that had some significance to us and which was a little remote. We were sure that no-one had gone there for a shoot before; which suited us well, since we didn’t want to do anything that had been done before.”

During the two hour shoot, the couple admitted to having a case of the giggles since they had to stare into each other’s eyes and make slow, subtle movements to catch certain shots. However, after a while it became second-nature and started to feel so magical that sometimes they forgot that Julie was there capturing their images!

Madeleine Fig by Jannina Figueroa

Since her 2013 launch at the International Trade Show Intermoda in Mexico, Jannina Figueroa has encountered a frenzy of international press coverage from Spain to Peru. Madeleine Fig has quickly become an “it girl” brand for Editors and retailers looking for something different. Jannina describes her collection as “vintage with a modern edge” and offers unusual silhouette choices. She uses distinctive fabrics and trims to create texture and mixes white fabrics with natural hues, to achieve a vintage flair. Most recently, Abigail Shafran, Producer of the T.V. show, Under Cover Boss, won the 2013 Emmy for “Outstanding Reality Show” and wore one of Madeline’s gowns.

All of Madeline Fig’s gowns are made in Los Angeles.

Trinidad Weddings was on location at New York’s Bridal Fashion Week, during October 2013. Although hundreds of gowns sashayed down the runways, there were a few designers we thought were show-stoppers:

ifferent bride, ifferent dress

Words by: Stephanie Ramlogan

We express who we are through our style. When it comes to wedding dresses, the same rules apply!

1 Fashion Lover

You’ll know you’re a fashion-loving, unpredictable bride if you enjoykeeping people guessing about yourfashion choices; so why not do thesame with your wedding dress? Push the boundaries with non-traditional colours or shapes.Consider playing with different lengths other than what might be expected. Keep in mind though, while you may want to be dramatic, don’t lose sight of your body and what silhouettes flatter you best.

2 Beachy Bride

Mimic the softness of the surroundings; the rolling waters and the silky sand,

with soft draping and easy silhouettes. Choose skirts that glide over the floor in

light, airy fabrics to keep you cool and refreshed. A beach bride is a no-fuss,

all-natural beauty.

A Local take on Honeymoon Wear Words by: Simone Sant-Ghuran

TW: How did you get started on your fashion business journey?I used to work as a Mechanical Engineer at an Engineering Consulting firm in Manhattan. The train station where I got off for work was underneath the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). I’ve always been interested in fashion and although I never saw myself designing, I wanted to learn how to sew. So, I signed up for a class called “Learn to sew like a Pro.” The following semester I took a few more classes. Next thing you know, in September 2010, I was giving two weeks’ notice to the Engineering firm to start Fashion School, full time.

TW: Why did you choose knits as your specialty?I hated the first knit class that I took! The machine was frustrating to use and the teacher was mean. At FIT, after attaining my Associate Degree, though, I had to decide on

a Bachelor’s degree specialization. I originally wanted to do Sportswear but then I noticed postings for Knitwear designers more than any other specialization. I decided to give knitwear a second chance. At the same time, I began to love the sleek, knitwear designs that I had been seeing from: Helmut Lang, Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim. Their knits weren’t the artsy-crafty things that I had associated with knits, instead they were edgy and easy to wear. At the last minute, I switched my specialization from Sportswear to Knitwear.

TW: How do you see your pieces fitting intoa honeymooner’s wardrobe?Knits by nature have an ease to them and have built in stretch because of the stitch structure. I think the last thing a bride wants to wear after squeezing into a corset, is another fitted garment that doesn’t move easily with her

Aisling Camps, Aisling Knits

Recently, I met with two daughters of our soil who are breaking new ground with their own versions of honeymoon and resort wear for the modern, Caribbean woman.

I couldn’t help but warm immediately to Aisling Camps. Her designs seemed to me as honest and as refreshing as her personality was!

Here’s what she had to share with me about her most recent knitwear collection:

body. My pieces can be thrown over a bathing suit while honeymooning and are a more polished type of casual wear. I also have sophisticated pieces that can be worn to dinner with the new hubby. My pieces are versatile and can be styled many ways. Best of all, you don’t need to iron knits so they’re perfect for travelling. Just give them some steam or hang them up in the bathroom while you take a hot shower and you’re ready to go!

TW: Who is your ideal customer? My ideal customer is a confident woman, with a youthful spirit. Someone who can put her own personal stamp on any outfit. My pieces are simple but if you look closely there are details there that complement a woman’s figure without being ostentatious.

TW: What do you see for your brand withinthe next 5 years?I would like Aisling Knits to be the first Caribbean-based knitwear label that garners international recognition. I think light-weight knitwear is a niche that really hasn’t been filled yet locally. There is a market for it and a great potential for business.
