(The Founder and the first Dean of SIMAD)Addressing at the 9th Convocation
1SIMAD UNIVERSITY 11th Convocation
It is a great joy for us and indeed a high honor to welcome you to our 11th graduation ceremony. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in our annual calendar, and we celebrate it with deep sense of gratitude to Allah by whose grace we have continued to partake of this event year after year. This year’s graduation falls in the 16th year of this institution’s dedicated service to the Somali nation.
SIMAD UNIVERSITY began in 1999, but transited into becoming a fully fledged chartered university, only some 5 years ago in 2011. Today it has secured a unique status as leading academic institution in Somalia, dedicated to offering excellent teaching facilities and research opportunities and produced professionals who were direly needed in today’s Somalia. In the beginning, we had a dream in educating Somalia’s youth, and your success is a further proof that our dreams came true.
Today we gladly present to Somalia hardworking men and women who are well trained and ready to take their place in society and render service in and beyond our borders. This year’s graduation theme: ‘nurturing talents for a greater Somalia’ underscores our conviction that these graduates who we honor today will go out and impact their world in many varied ways in applying their talents for the development of a greater, better Somalia, and indeed global service.
My call to young people has always been that there are numerous opportunities out there and that there are infinite possibilities of what you could do with your kind of training, talent, diligence, passion and character. I must, however, add that you need not just wait for what opportunities the world may give you, but that you must be imaginative enough to create opportunities. Allah is blessing our country Somalia and the region at large and the future is brighter than ever before. You are going out at a very promising time. You must be part of the equation and take your rightful place in contributing to our national aspirations in working towards the attainment of our national goals. Go out and productively exploit your innovative skills and knowledge to become great innovators, pathfinders, employees and entrepreneurs.
As I conclude I appreciate the support of the parents, guardians, sponsors and spouses to us and to the graduates. May Allah richly bless you all and once again thank you very much for being here today.
SIMAD UNIVERSITY BEGAN WAY BACK IN 1999, BUT TRANSITED INTO BECOMING A FULLY FLEDGED CHARTERED UNIVERSITY,
Message from the Chairman of the Board Of Trustees

SIMAD UNIVERSITY PROFILE
14 SIMAD UNIVERSITY 11th Convocation
A LIVING LEGEND
Ustad Odawa joined SIMAD Institute in 2003, and immediately he was appointed as the Public Relations Director. As he was active, he served in a number of other duties, for instance, in the absence of the Dean, he used to made decisions of his behalf, mostly he was the acting dean, even though he was not appointed officially, he was informally the Deputy Dean from 2003 to 2007. He was nominated to the position of Rector of SIMAD University in 2010. His appointment came as a result of his extra ordinary performance he had shown. His leadership characteristic came to be known by other members of the great SIMAD Family at home and abroad. Mr. Odowa is regarded as the organizer of the first trade exhibition at SIMAD University in 2003 and subsequently the one held in 2004, as the matter of facts these added value to the overall activities of the institute, as a result boosting the image of the institute at local as well as international level. Shortly afterwards, many international organizations engaged in SIMAD to keep the momentum for development going smoothly among them UNDP and The World Bank.
The positive impact of these activities was immediately noticed as the number of students admitted at the institute jumped to a high record, following massive recruitment of large number of staff to carry out the academic, administrative as well as other essential tasks at institute. He was the first person to organize Cultural week, furthermore, he was the mastermind behind the creation of administrative board of the institute in late 2003.
When he was appointed as the Rector of the university, he managed to bring about significant changes in the structure of the university, first of all the institute immediately turned out to be university, and directed its concentration towards opening up new faculties. Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences were launched shortly afterwards under his direction and commandments . He showed his desire to open science faculties together with the existing faculties. What sounded a dream was turned into reality. Both Faculty of Medicine and Education are now up and running after years of scrutiny and proper planning. Mr. Odowaa was a visionary Rector who directs the university to the right direction. He has a dream to get a ninety million dollars project to build a main campus at KM17 (Ceelasha Biyaha) which can accommodate more than 30,000 students and building residents for all staff.
He was nominated to the position of Rector of SIMAD University in 2010, his appointment came as a result of his extra ordinary performance he had shown. His leadership characteristic came to be known by other members of the great SIMAD Family at home and abroad.
15SIMAD UNIVERSITY 11th Convocation
The logo, which is the sign of the university, was designed by SIMAD Family. The logo stands for traditional ways of teaching and writing. Primarily, it shows a wood for writing Quranic lessons known as “LOOH” in the Somali language surrounded by two bird feathers from both sides and all of the three components rest on an arch. At the top of the wood, the name of university was scripted in Somalia Language. The head of the wood indicates that national development and personal progress lies with education.
In the middle of the wooden plate, SIMAD, Which is the university’s name, was inscribed. Just below the name of the university, there is an open book and rising sun indicatingthe dissemination of knowledge in a new era. The color of the wood is green showing that prosperity can be obtained with the help of education. At the bottom, two feather-pens in a full inkpot are resting on an arch that symbolizes facilitation for students to receive education at the university.
Somali Flag appears at the summit where the two feather-pens meet, the flag is symbolic identity marking that the university belongs to the Somalis in general. The name of the university was written in three languages, English, Arabic and Somali, with Somali and English being written on the arch holding the ink-pots. The meeting of the two arches shows solidarity among the students, staff and management.

OUR HEROES
17SIMAD UNIVERSITY 11th Convocation
Every institution that exists has its builders who established it in the first place. SIMAD is not an exception. Therefore, it is worthmentioning the role of individuals who have managed to bring out into existence this tremendous change. These public figures share similar characteristics of vision, humbleness, courage and ambition.
Hassan Sheik Mohamoud, former Dean of SIMAD, the founding father of the institute who among others has worked hard to set the strong foundation for the curriculum, initiated a culture of transparency and created strong solidarity among the staff through merit and competence that has leaded the popular slogan of “SIMAD Family”.
During his term in office, honorable Hassan Sheikh had foreseen the potential need of SIMAD for resources mainly human capital. Therefore, the authorities sent so far more than 80 recipients of scholarship for postgraduate studies. The sponsored ones have returned and they have taken part in enhancing the overall development of SIMAD; at the same time sending strong signal that SIMAD is a place of hard work, where talents are created.
Many norms and internal culture has being formed, in the meantime while addressing the individual. “Ustaad” for instance is widely used across the campus right now, a culture of respect and gratitude that always expresses appreciation and humbleness while serving as a team.
To make sure that his legacy does not go in vain, honorable Ustaad Hassan Sheikh instilled in the minds of SIMAD Family that this institution must exist forever and hence continuously go forward with concrete success and development. He repeatedly used to say that if SIMAD fails to exist, it is shame on me to say I used to work in SIMAD before. Among the habits that SU Family inherited from Ustaad Hassan are the culture of reading, learning and teaching.
In his semester address to the students and staff, he used to stress that SIMAD Family and campus are peaceful and no conflict and fighting cannot take place in the campus. Since the inception of SIMAD, no conflict/violence among students and lecturers has taken place. This important achievement laid by Ustaad Hassan came through setting high moral values and not stiff and strict punishments.
Ustaad Hassan left an enduring culture, shared values, vision and solidarity among SIMAD Family members that will remain forever. His stances, decisions, talks, slogans and examples are and always will be inspiration to all SU Family.
Farah Sheikh Abdikadir, the former Director of Africa Muslims Agency (AMA) office in Somalia, has been a long serving individual who has worked hard to ensure that secondary school graduates achieve higher education at home.
From 1992 to 1999, he was working in humanitarian and helping the needy people. This assistance included providing primary and secondary education. Post-collapse of the government, the people were desperate and were not even thinking about tertiary education. However, early 1997 to 1999, the ambition of higher education came back due to the vast number of students who completed their secondary schools and were not able to study abroad.
So, Ustaad Farah had an idea that worth devoting resources; money, human and time. This idea was establishing a higher learning institute in Mogadishu.
Ustaad Farah looked similar minded educators and found Ustaad Dhobale and Ustaad Hassan Sheihk. Proposals and plans were prepared and approved from African Muslims Agency Authority to get funding for such a noble project.
The idea turned into institution that its reputation crossed the borders and is known all over the world. The noble characters of Ustaad Farah will remain in SIMAD. You are a role model to all SIMAD Family.
Mohamed Hussein Dhobale was one of the founders of SIMAD. He has dedicated all his time and energy in establishing SIMAD. He believed that he could serve the Somali people at a time most of the educators fled the country for their own safety. He had the dream and vision that one day an institution like SIMAD can exist amid the anarchy and chaos.
He was critical to the corrupted practices of all kinds. He inculcated to SIMAD students that knowledge without ethics and good character will destroy the person and that knowledge and skills gained from SIMAD are double-edged sword. He used to share with students that the man who studied accounting at SIDAM to be able to embezzle the corporate and NGOs money and funds, who unfortunately realized that accounting teaches effective internal control and not how to commit fraud.
Usaad Dhobale served a number of positions at SIMAD. Remarkably, he served as the academic director. He also helped the establishment of similar institutions in Galka’yo. He was the consultant to the founders of SIMPA in Galka’yo.
He was a writer in the local newspapers and at the same time used to recite poems of the Somali poets. He used to strive to find job opportunities for SIMAD graduates by matching the opportunities and well-qualified graduates. He used to follow-up until the process is completed.
He was a man who is in control of his ego and humble for both students and staff. He used to sit with students and discuss critically and allow them to express their opinion freely. His objective was to eliminate the mental picture of dictatorship management of students and teach them to accept the opponents’ opinions.
