It is our sincere pleasure to welcome all of you to the 19th Annual Pickering College Golf Tournament at beautiful Silver Lakes Golf & Conference Centre.
On behalf of the 2018 Golf Committee, volunteers, staff, and students, we are thrilled you could join us today! The tournament gives us an opportunity to spend quality time with returning guests and with those who are joining us for the first time.
The first documented mention of the word “golf” was in Edinburgh on March 6, 1457, when King James II banned “ye golf” in an attempt to encourage archery practice which was being neglected at the time. Happily, some 561 years later, we are embracing golf here today at Silver Lakes - showing our Puma Spirit with our vibrant house colors.
In 2016, the Golf Committee introduced the Foster ’46 Recognition Award in memory of Bruce Foster who graduated from Pickering College in 1946. Bruce was a golf enthusiast and passionate supporter of Pickering College. Bruce was known as an athlete, friend, fan, inspiring Board and Corporation member and a driving force in our school community.
This year, we are immensely proud to honor Mr. Malcolm Mason as the 2018 Foster ’46 recipient. Malcolm has earned distinction for his commitment to the success of this annual event as a participant, committee member and sponsor. Congratulations Malcolm and thank you for your continued support!
We could not do it without you! A sincere thank you to our 2018 sponsors, donors, participants and committed volunteers who contributed to today’s success. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go to the rejuvenation of Memorial Field and track, which is an integral part of our beautiful campus, enjoyed not only by Pickering College, but also by the greater community.
Thank you for your support of the 19th Annual Pickering College Golf Tournament! We are very excited to be celebrating the tournament’s 20th anniversary in 2019 – hope to see you then!
Sincerely,
Margo Starr & Steve Gruhl

June, 2018
Dear Golfers and Guests,
T here are few things that have been around longer than Pickering College. Celebrating our 175th year, the school predates the establishment of the
telephone, hockey, safety pins, Coca Cola, basketball, the Franklin Expedition, dynamite, ballpoint pens, the steam turbine, bicycles and . . . the founding of our great country of Canada. But there is one thing that had a long head start on Pickering College, and that is the game of golf.
The modern game, as we know it, is said to have been invented in Scotland in 1457. In the intervening years, golf has taken on a prominence in our culture that transcends many other inventions and events. From our definition of beautiful landscapes – Augusta, Pebble Beach, St. Andrews; to the enrichment of our vocabulary – par, bogey, slice, gimme; to the ubiquitous nicknames – Tiger, Arnie, the Golden Bear, the Shark; to the impact on our recreational habits, vacations and expenditures, golf has established itself as a fixture in our modern cultural consciousness.
Perhaps that’s why the 19th Annual Pickering College Golf Tournament is such a popular event. You take two of the most important and long-lasting activities in Canada and combine them to create an exciting, enjoyable and unforgettable experience. Influencing generations of eager enthusiasts, Pickering College (and golf) combine equal parts faith, freedom, friendship and fun to create a legacy long after the year (or round) has wrapped up.
So, thank you for your presence and generosity. We are indebted to this year’s Golf Committee, chaired by Margo Starr and Steve Gruhl, for their contributions to the success of the tournament. On behalf of Pickering College, thank you to our sponsors, donors, volunteers and staff for making this an exceptional event. No doubt it too, like the game and the school, will stand the test of time.

FOR PARTICIPATING
The Pickering College Annual Golf Tournament revenue sup-ports programs, and campus improvements at our beautiful school. Since its inception in 1999, this successful event has
welcomed over 2200 participants and has raised over $675,000 for Pickering College.
This year’s event will support rejuvenation of Memorial Field and track. Memorial Field and track was a project first completed in the early 1950s as a result of alumni and community support, in honour of the 43 Old Boys who had lost their lives in WWII.
Memorial Field and track are vital parts of school life for our students, staff and friends in the community, and a place of great memories for so many of our alumni.
We hope that you enjoy your day at Silver Lakes and thank you for your support!

This award recognizes an individual’s love of the game of golf, their sense of comradery, their commitment to the Annual Pickering College Tournament, and their desire to compete to the best of their ability.
The Foster ’46 is named after Mr. Bruce Foster, who graduated from Pickering College in 1946. He was a golf enthusiast and passionate supporter of Pickering College. Bruce was known as a masterful coordinator, promoter, athlete, friend, fan, inspiring Board and Corporation member and a driving force in our school community.
As this year’s winner, Malcolm Mason has earned distinction for his commitment to the success of this annual event as a participant, committee member and sponsor. Malcolm epitomizes the phrase, “The People are Pickering.” With his warm and friendly manner Malcolm has inspired friends, family and business partners to join in a spirited day on the course. He has also guided planning with insightful strategies, has mentored many new committee members, and is never too busy to roll up his sleeves and get the job done.
Malcolm is an enthusiastic participant, never hesitating to dress in theme, decorate his golf cart or cheer on the competition. Malcolm’s strong belief in community and his sense of fun is infectious and has resulted in increased golf registrations and sponsorships, which in turn have brought in thousands of dollars to support capital projects that our students continue to benefit from today. We could not have been more pleased to have Malcolm’s foursome win the 2017 tournament!
Thank you to Malcolm for his significant contributions to the success of this important Pickering College fundraising event.
