Sue Douglas Reporter

Bill Tapogna, Thanks for becoming Prez again!

Well, I'm back in the saddle again! I thank the SVAS Board and the membership for your trust in giving me the honor of being your President, again. First off, I want to wish a speedy recovery to Carmela Gullo who re-cently suffered serious injuries in a fall down several steps in her home. We hope to see you well soon, Carmela. And we hear that Maryb-arbara Zorio will start playing with the Happy Days band again. It will be great to see you back Marybarbara! A special thanks to all of you who bring "goodies" for us to enjoy with our coffee during our programs. They are greatly appreciated. Also, thanks to Kris and Bob Stanfield for the great raffle prizes for our last concert!

And a special thanks to Karen Bounomo for donating her SECOND beautiful hand-made pillow for the raffle! And to all of you who buy raffle tickets, a special note of appreciation---this helps pay for the rent of the concert room and paying for our featured performers. Our "tiered" membership options (Platinum, Gold, regular) have been very successful, and your membership dues are appreciated and help defray the costs of publishing the Newsletter, pay for entertainers and other operating expenses. And a special note of appreciation to those of you who have made generous contributions in addition to your membership dues!! In February’s meeting, several members joined in Vic & Barbara Corsiglia's jam band. A large crowd, and good music. And we even stayed together (most of the time!). And we had fun doing so. Thanks for leading, Vic! It is always a special treat to see and hear the many and varied brands and types of accordions that are played during our concerts. This last concert is a case in point: Ed Massolo and Jana Maas with their beautiful Excelsiors. Ernie Beran with his Gabbanelli (seldom seen in a piano-accordion format). Rudy Pivk with his beautiful Scandalli (and previously with his Hohner Gola--a special treat!). And Don Savant with his TWO beautiful Giullietti accordions. These are all acoustic machines. In the future we will see and hear various electronics, (Concerto, Petosa, Rolands). Very different sounds and enjoyable instruments. Variety is indeed the "spice of life" in the field of accordions! To all, please stay safe and well! We hope to see you March 4th!

Sue Douglas was our reporter this meeting. Sue did a great job - you can read her report on page 4. Sue also played a few solos in the Open Mic session after the Jam Band.

Welcome New Members Janet McIntyre, San Jose

Jena Rauti and Gary Breitbard, Palo Alto

Vic and Barbara Corsiglia’s Jam Band played fun music that we like to sing, and some people like to dance to. When they played OH MARIE, Ray and Melissa danced. When they played the Tennessee Waltz, Ray and Melissa and Stan and Marie danced! We also enjoyed singing HAPPY WANDERER, SOMEWHERE MY LOVE, AINT SHE SWEET, BABY FACE, PEG O’ MY HEART and THE BEER BARREL POLKA. Yep! The gang was all there! And toward the finale of their performances they played the Johnson Rag and gave it a really jazzy sound. I love that. Sue Douglas played several pieces while the next players were getting ready. Sue’s pieces are always well played, rhythmic, and widely appreciated.

Ed Masolo displayed phenomenal fingering as he played Anima E Core, Mala Femmina, Come Back to Sorrento, Jalousie, Motoci-cletta Polka, Sun and Shade Waltz, a medley of Fascination, Around the World and Melody of Love, then, Beautiful Days. When Rudy Pivk played Chitarra Romana Tango, we went to Italy. Then, when he played Jambalaya, we came back to Louisiana. Great playing Rudy. Bob Stanfield played an encouraging song called His Eye Is On the Sparrow. Then he played

a classical melody by J. S. Bach called How Brightly Shines the Morning Star. Then he took us to the 1970’s with two melodies: Love Me Tender, and Fantasia Waltz (as arranged by Harry Gay). Well done, Bob. There was a pause in the music at this point while the Society elected a new President and a new Board. Bill Ta-pogna is the new president (“again,” as he says), and Lou Buonomo is the vice president. We are all extremely grateful that Bill and Lou are willing to serve the Society this way. You can see the remainder of the Board on page 6. All the elections were unanimous, with a round of applause at the close. Our first featured player, Jana Maas, helped us relate in a Latin way with Bionda, Besame Mucho, Sentimental Tan-go, Funiculi Funicula, Iupali Iupala, (arranged by Harry Gay) and Del Sol. But in between those melodies, she helped us tap our fingers and toes to the Tick Tock Polka. Also we traveled down the Henry Mancini Moon River and sang when she played Let My Call You Sweetheart. When she played More and White Ribbon, hearing those was a new experience for me. And she smiled at us while she was making all the music so enjoyable. Thank you, Jana. Our second featured player, Ernie Beran, took us to France with La Veillée (“the Vigil,”written by Yann Tiersen), C’est Magnifique, (by Cole Porter), and C’est Si Bon. Then, he took us to Italy with Come Sei Bella, (by Armando Tapani). Then off to Scotland with Annie Laurie, Ireland with Danny Boy, England with two Beatles songs: With a Little Help From My Friends and All My Loving. And finally we ended up in Austria (via Rodgers & Hammer-stein) with Edelweiss, My Favorite Things and Climb Every Mountain. Some pieces were in an unfamiliar style, but were very enjoyable! Thank you, Ernie.

Around the accordion world: The Cotati Accordion Festival this year will be on Sat and Sun, Aug 18 & 19, in Cotati, CA. Sheri Mignano as the student stage coordinator, has kicked off prepa-ration for the Festival with an announcement about application forms for student scholarships. The photo is Sheri with the 2016 student group. More info at:

[email protected] The Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration will be on June 21- 24, in Leavenworth, WA. You can see in the announcement on page 3 that Petosa Accordions in Seattle has moved. As most players know, Petosa is the last accordion retailer on the West coast that produces its own brand name accordions. These days, with global supply chains, and a highly tiered production base, producing an accordion is largely a matter of design, then setting up the production chain. Petosa has been a master of this art for many years. Pe-tosa accordions are well known as high quality instruments, manufactured in Italy, and much favored by the stars in the profession. And it is good news that at least part of the reason behind the move is to find a larger floor space. On a lighter note, anyone who has visited the old premises will remember the entrance doors - a large pair of brass doors. Well, they made the trip to the new shop too, as you can see in the picture on page 3. What is the definition of an optimist? An accordion player with a pager. In March, Bob Stanfield’s band will resume playing in the First Friday events at Los Altos. From 6 to 8pm you can hear accordion music on the street outside Le Boulanger on Main Street.

Ex Prez Ken and Sharon Caple visit Polka Central, USA

ILLINOIS POLKA FESTIVAL, SCHAUMBERG , IL. 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Bob Doszak Band Leader, on the accordion, is the founder of this festival. He brings in the top Polka Bands for three days of fun, Dancing and Jamming. This event is held at the Hyatt Regency with a ballroom that will accommodate 700 people. Bob is a member of the Polka Hall of Fame Honor Roll. The Cleveland style of Slovenia Polkas dominated the stage.

Bob’s son Chris, who is also the band drummer, is taking over his dads festival which is always held the first weekend of February. I asked Bob why he chose such a cold month. He said in the summer the farmers were always working in good weather and the towns all had competing festivals, that with school schedules and Holidays left February as the only month available. Sharon and I had a great time dancing for three days. - Ken Caple

Accordion Revival

George Bachich wrote a great book about accordions: Piano Accordion, Owner’s Manual and Buyer’s Guide. The book is a great start on explaining how accordions function and are made. You will be much less hesitant to open up a problem accordion with this book on hand, and at least find out the cause of the problem. George’s plan for the Buyer’s Guide was exactly to let a reader quickly assess the true condition of an accordion offered for sale, and re-duce the risks of buying a piece of junk, or, passing up a true bargain with a simply fixed blemish. 28 chapters cover all of the practical aspects of instruments. You can’t help getting the feeling that you really understand about accordi-ons, at last!

But wait, there is a lot more! George has a website: accordionrevival.com. It goes into great detail on repair tech-niques that are barely mentioned in the book. This is THE source of information for anyone interested in truly repair-ing an accordion. Topics right down to making the hand tools that are useful for particular jobs are covered. I can speak from (a very little!) personal experience that it is nothing short of miraculous that George took the time and trouble to write out all this information, and make it available. Tuning is probably best left to a professional (of which there are very few.) But sticking keys, leaking valves, … can be easily inspected and identified, and with a smidgeon of luck, fixed. George lives in Napa, and usually runs a booth at Cotati where the book is available for sale. Otherwise, you can or-der it from accordionrevival.com, and it is usually available on Amazon.
