This day commemorates the return of the sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Ji, to the
holy city of Amristar after his release from detention. Guru Hargobind ji was
imprisoned by Emperor Jahangir because he seemed to be afraid of the Guru's
growing power. Guru ji had agreed to his own release on the condition that the other
fifty-two detainees would also be released. He was therefore known as the " Bandi
Chorrh". He arrived at Amritsar on the day of Diwali and the Golden Temple was also
lit with hundreds of lamps. Thereafter they came to be known as the "Bandi Chhor
Divas" (the day of freedom). A magnificent Gurdwara has been built in the Gwalior
Fort in memory of the sixth Guru. It is called Gurdwara Bandichhor.

Q/A SESSIONS
After the success of a pilot ladies project
last year to form a ladies sub group, we
have now managed to secure funding to
set up much needed ladies activities
such as: Support Service, Training,
Health, Volunteering, Heritage and Social
activities to name but a few!
Come along to the open meeting on
Friday 4th November, 6pm to 8pm at the
Gurdwara, to help us start planning a
programme of activities for the New Year!
The year long ‘Punjabi Fusion’ project is at it’s
final stages! 15 young people have done
research into Punjabi heritage through
museum visits, internet, photography, film-
ing and conducting oral interviews with the
Northampton Sikh community. They are
now attending workshops to create display
boards, a short film and collecting Punjabi
items for the exhibition.
They would greatly appreciate donations of
Punjabi artefacts, old photographs, film
clips and costume/accessories for the
project. Please contact us if you can help!
The exhibition boards will be displayed at
SCCYC for Diwali on Wednesday 26th
October, 6pm to 9pm, and the full exhibition
will be on display at the Northampton
Museum from Sunday 13th November to
Friday 30th December — Go Along!
AWARDS DAY, SUMMER FETE & NORTHAMPTON SIKHS EXHIBITION
CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE’S AWARDS: Over 70 children & young people received
certificates for participation and achievements in a range of after school activities, they were
also rewarded with summer fun activities on Sunday 10th July.

‘Young Leaders’ project. Well done to: Jagjit Singh, Maninder Singh, Jasraj S Reyatt, Jessica K Grewal and Amrinda K Chahal.
SCCYC & PUNJABI SCHOOL HAVE BEEN AWARDED FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE!
The awards were received for active involvement and engagement of children & young people in
services and quality in delivery of the services. Staff and volunteers are already working hard to
gain the Silver awards next year!
PUNJABI GCSE ‘A’ & ‘B’ GRADE PASSES! We are proud to announce that once again
young people have been awarded prizes for achieving excellent grades in Punjabi GCSE’s.
Congratulations to Belinda Kaur Mahil, Harjivan Kaur Chhokkar and Hanisha Kaur Kang.
SAVE OUR SUPPLEMENTARY SCHOOLS! The Punjabi School, along with other
language schools is under threat due to withdrawal of funding. Children benefit immensely
from the school by learning their mother tongue, Sikh values, community interaction and
gaining an extra GCSE! So please help us to continue this most important activity by
signing the petition and making donations to the school so that your children can
continue to benefit from it.

ORAL INTERVIEWS
SIKHS OF NORTHAMPTON: Young people interviewed elders from the Sikh community to find out why, when and how they
came to Northampton and their struggles and achievements on arrival. The exhibition opening received a lot of interest and
excellent feedback. The young people would like to share some facts & feelings about the Sikhs of Northampton with you:
“Northampton was the 1st to have a Sikh Mayor in the UK!”
“Northampton was the 1st to have the youngest Sikh Gurdwara President in the UK!”
“The 1st Sikhs to move to Northampton were very brave, hard working, community
minded and have great achievements considering the struggles they faced!”
“This project is a 1st for Sikhs living in Northampton, there are no such recordings of
the history or stories of the towns Sikhs until now!”
“The project has been very interesting and educational and has instilled pride
amongst young people and adults alike”.
This exhibition, along with the ‘Punjabi Fusion’ one will be on display at the Gurdwara for Diwali celebrations on
Wednesday 26th October, 6pm to 9pm, and at Northampton Museum from Sunday 13th November
to Friday 30th December. Please make an effort to go and see the young peoples hard work!
