SSSSSSSSuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeerrrrrrrr ooooooooffffffff SSSSSSSSppppppppoooooooorrrrrrrrtttttttt by Fr Philip Morris

As many of you know I am a sports fanatic, in my

younger days taking part, now as a spectator.

What a summer 2014 has been for sports fans. In

July and August alone, we have the British Grand

Prix at Silverstone; Cycling: Tour de France;

Cricket: England v India, Test Series; Football:

World Cup; Golf: The Open, Royal Liverpool;

Commonwealth Games, Glasgow; Athletics:

European Championships, Zurich; Rugby

League: Challenge Cup final, Wembley. These

just being the major events.

I can assure that my wife Ann is not a “happy

bunny”, I probably haven’t help by saying, “well

look on the bright side even synchronised

swimming is better than ‘Strictly Come Dancing’

Now the Bible doesn’t specifically address

participation in sporting events. As Christians, we

have to work (and play) daily with those who do

not share our faith or believe in a Divine Being.

But Christians whatever part (or position) they

play in life, are to be required to be witnesses for

Christ (1 Peter 3:15). We are to be examples of

Christ for all to see (Matthew 5:14-16). We

should take every opportunity to show others just

what Christianity is all about. We should always

keep our conduct above reproach.

Some professional sports heroes today are a far

cry from being positive role models, but there are

many sports men and women who are wonderful

examples for us all. If a Christian athlete is really

praying and seeking a way to share Christ with

others, God will provide ample opportunities. For

a Christian whatever you do, whatever sport you

play; we should do it for the glory of God (1

Corinthians 10:31).

The only caution to be given to a believer who is

playing sports—or is a fan of sports—is to not

allow sports to become an idol (1 John 5:21).

Never allow sports to become more important to

you than your relationship with God.

It is fine to be interested in sports, to be

knowledgeable about sports, to be a fan of a

certain team. The problem is that there are far too

many people who can name all of the World Cup

teams or the Welsh Rugby Team, but cannot

name the books of the New Testament.

Far too many people who will spend hours

playing and/or watching sports each day, but do

not spend more than a few minutes a day praying

or reading the Bible. Clearly, this is not pleasing

to God. Our priorities in life should be ordered in

such a way that they honour and glorify Him.

There are a number of sports bible verses that tell

us about how to be good athletes, and the

Christian traits that sport can instill in each of us.

SSSSSSSSuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeerrrrrrrr ooooooooffffffff SSSSSSSSppppppppoooooooorrrrrrrrtttttttt (Continued from Front Page)

Here are some sports bible verses that give us a proper sense of competition, winning, losing,

perseverance, and sportsmanship:

On CompetitionOn CompetitionOn CompetitionOn Competition

1 Corinthians 9:25

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not

last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (NIV) …

On WinningOn WinningOn WinningOn Winning

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to

get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that

will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running

aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I

have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (NIV)

2 Timothy 2:5

Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes

according to the rules. (NIV)

On LosingOn LosingOn LosingOn Losing

Mark 8:34-37

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he

must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but

whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole

world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? " (NIV)

On PerseveranceOn PerseveranceOn PerseveranceOn Perseverance

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that

hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

(NIV)

Galatians 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time

we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (NIV)

On SportsmanshipOn SportsmanshipOn SportsmanshipOn Sportsmanship

Philippians 2:3

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in

humility consider others better than yourselves. (NIV)

I remember when I was young, my late father instilling in me, "It is not who wins or loses, but it is how

you play the game". I was taught that the game itself could teach me how to become "a good sport" and

how as a team member I could learn to work with others. I hope I have lived up to that.

Jesus says in Matthew 19:30 "But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first." To

paraphrase Jesus' Words the statement could be, "But many that are winners shall be losers, and the losers

shall be the winners".

Jesus did not seem to be a winner in His time, and He even appeared to be a loser. If we would look at His

physical existence; we would think that He was just a man, who was rejected, despised, and then murdered.

However, in the spiritual realm; He was the greatest of all winners! He not only overcame Himself, but

He provided a Way that all who come and follow Him could also be overcomers in this world!

Have a great summer and may the best person/team win.

Fr. Phil/Pip

A-Z Of Churchyard Conservation

“N” is for Newt

The Great Crested Newt is our largest and most

threatened species of newt. Compared with the

Palmate Newt and the Smooth Newt, the Great

Crested Newt is much larger (up to 15cm long)

and more heavily built. In the spring males

develop a crest along their back and top of the

tail. They need plenty of invertebrate food and

spend most of the year on dry land. They visit

ponds in the breeding season (from about

February to July) and can be found the rest of

the year up to 500m away from water. If

managed sensitively, churchyards can become

havens for these newts with their healthy

invertebrate populations and sheltering sites

such as dry stone walls.

Great crested newts are widespread across

Europe but are in decline. Britain has probably

Europe’s largest population, and they are

protected by UK and European law.

Llanelwedd with Llanfaredd, Llansantffraed-in-Elwell, Bettws, Cregrina, Glascwm and Rhulen

The Colwyn Group of ParishesDear FriendsDear FriendsDear FriendsDear Friends “The still, small voice of God…”“The still, small voice of God…”“The still, small voice of God…”“The still, small voice of God…” At this time of the year in my letter to

, I would be talking about us having

a holiday, a break from the routine, a chance to

refresh our bodies, a chance to chill out.

Hopefully, we might be fortunate enough to laze

for a couple of weeks on some Mediterranean

beach, sunning ourselves, followed by wining and

dining in the hotel restaurant. Or maybe a cruise

is more in your line! If this is the case, then

wonderful – ‘enjoy’ as the Americans would say!

I, too, will be heading away in our caravan to

explore pastures new and one or two places we

hope to know slightly better!

So all this talk of refreshing ourselves and

pastures new reminds me of the Church in Wales

document, “2020 Vision – Annual Review:

Change is Happening”. Yes, I know, it’s that ‘C’

word again. A word I’ve been carping on about

for ages now, Change! But actually it comes at a

very opportune moment in our year, with us

thinking about refreshing ourselves.

Part of refreshment of our body is refreshment of

the mind. If we are not careful we become stale, dry

and pretty soon our mind begins to die spiritually.

The document I mentioned is now en route to

your church. You will be receiving it very

shortly. It is a large blue booklet, so keep an eye

open for it. It explains where the Church in Wales

is with the Review and importantly, the fact that

Change is already happening! Far from this

change being negative, a lot of what is happening

is hugely exciting and relevant to the Church

today and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to

those who at present do not know it.

Those of us who have read the excellent front

page article in the June issue of ,

written by James and Lucyann Ashdown, will

appreciate that Christianity may be changing, as it

has over the last 2000 years. But the exciting, if

not scary part of all of this is, as James and

Lucyann put it, “…discovering what shape

Christ’s body will take in the coming years is an

invitation to life and liberation, an exciting

journey, ever reminding us of Jesus’ call to

‘follow me’’.

We must take time out to refresh our ideas and

minds as well as our bodies. Whatever else we

may do we must listen to that still, small voice of

God, calling us by name, leading us, moulding us

to the new life he wants us to be a part of! Let us

not forget that another exciting part of all of this

is that we have the privilege of following and

acting on that call.

Happy holidays!!

The Erwood with Painscastle Group of Parishes

Dear Friends, Hello………

As I write this, we’re basking in a much heralded

and greatly relished period of glorious, golden

summer weather. The sight of farmers busy in the

fields baling remind us that even as we enter the

time of the year in which most people think about

taking a summer holiday, work still continues.

For me this is a timely reminder of what is of

fundamental in life and ministry.

As my wife Jean and I continue our preparations

to move from Llanyre down the road to Aberedw

Rectory; each time we visit, what by the time you

read us will already be our new home, one further

piece of the mammoth jigsaw puzzle to get the

house ready to move into gradually falls into

place. How reminiscent that feels of all of the

major changes which take place in our lives.

When first viewed, some challenges seem just too

enormous and overwhelming to contemplate and

yet, if we approach them calmly and

systematically then gradually and almost

imperceptibly the challenge becomes gradually

more achievable until before we realise it, it’s

been completed. That was certainly how I felt as I

stacked my large pile of logs gradually into the

log shed at the Rectory the other night.

It’s at that very moment when a daunting task is

completed that we’re tempted to sit back on our

laurels, confident of ourselves and proud of what

we’ve achieved. Such a sense, is particularly

enticing when a benefice reaches the conclusion

of a vacancy. That’s it, job done, now it’s down

to the Vicar to roll up his sleeves and get on with

the task while we take a much deserved and well-

earned rest!

But, now let’s be honest you knew that there was

one of those coming, didn’t you? Christian life

and ministry don’t follow that pattern or logic at

all. The task of proclaiming the Gospel in the

communities of the Erwood with Painscastle

Groups is not one for the vicar alone. It is a

solemn vocation which all of us share; a task to

which each and every Christian person is called

by God for the building up of his kingdom on

earth. The church in the communities served by

the Erwood and Painscastle is not me or you, it’s

us! Making Christ better known to those around

us, is a vocation in which we all share and we’ll

succeed in that task if we work together for the

greater benefit of all.

As Jean and I prepare to come and join you,

please pray that God will guide, inspire and

strengthen us for the challenges and opportunities

which lie ahead. Don’t forget to pray for

yourselves, that the Spirit will do exactly the

same for you, as we begin our journey together in

this part of the Lord’s Vineyard. As this new

chapter in the life and ministry of the church

begins we can do a great deal worse than

remember the old Latin phrase: ad majorem Dei

gloriam to the greater glory of God, the task to

which we all aspire.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to

everybody who has worked so hard maintaining

the life and witness of the churches throughout

the vacancy and especially to Rev Phil Morris

and our esteemed colleagues. Thank you all.

With my love and prayers as ever

Ben

The Upper Wye Group of Parishes

Dear Friends,

And goodbye…….

As I write this, it hardly seems

possible that almost 5 years

have now passed since that

memorable service at All

Saints, Newbridge-on-Wye

during which I became your Vicar. Some of the

churchwardens may just remember that during

that service as I poured water into the font to

remind us of our baptism, some of it managed

inadvertently to escape from the font and out onto

some of you who were gathered around me at the

time! My response to this was, “I like making a

splash!” I’m confident that during the intervening

years, many of you have realised that I wasn’t

entirely joking!!

The 5 years that have passed since, can it really

be as long as that, have been both memorable,

deeply fulfilling, richly rewarding and hugely

enjoyable as we’ve journeyed together along our

own personal pilgrimage of faith. During these

years, we’ve laughed, cried, grieved, debated,

even on occasion, disputed but above all learned

more of the love of God and his desire for each

and every one of us. Through that, and binding it

all together, we’ve done the best we can to

proclaim the good news of Christ to our

communities.

Along the way, there’ve been high points and low

ones, times when I no less than you have

wondered where the good Lord might possibly be

leading us; but as you look back, the painful

moments seem to be overwhelmed by those times

of joy and fellowship. We’ve bid a fond and

tearful farewell to some stalwarts of our

communities who’ve also been tremendous

apostles of Christ, but we’ve also welcomed new

members into the family of God and the

community of faith. That, at its heart is what

Christian life and ministry is all about, human

beings loved by God into existence, redeemed by

Christ into undreamt of possibilities and sustained

by the Holy Spirit for their pilgrimage of life and

faith and our vocation as fellow Christians is to

support and encourage each other in that journey

walking in the footsteps of Christ.

Now, as Jean and I prepare to move on, this

particular chapter closes, but as it does so a new

one comes into being; yes, there is always Good

Friday but the joy and the triumph of Easter are

waiting around the corner, just out of sight.

Whatever the future holds, and I completely

accept that it can seem about as clear as mud on

occasion, the Lord does have a plan for us as

individuals and for the Church in our

communities. The task and the challenge for each

of us is to wait prayerfully upon God knowing

that he will never leave or abandon us.

Remember that Christ himself endured the agony

and desolation of Good Friday before he could

reveal his true self in the triumphant joy of

Easter. The Bishop who ordained me, repeated

used the following phrase, “for all that has been

thanks. For all that shall be, yes.” I can do no

better than reiterate those words.

I would like to conclude by expressing my

profound gratitude to you all for your fellowship,

your support and your encouragement over these

past years and to assure you all of my prayers for

the future.

Ben

The Parishes of the Irfon Valley & Blaenau Irfon

Lucyann writes… ‘Will you come and join the dance?

Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join

the dance?

Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you

join the dance?’

Extract from Lobster-quadrille in

Lewis Caroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’

On the day of Pentecost the frightened, hapless friends

of Jesus found themselves transformed from the depths

of despair to the heights of celebrity status. Empowered

by the Holy Spirit, they not only address a crowd

worthy of the Millennium Stadium, but they do so in

multiple languages, simultaneously without the aid of

21st century technology and the results were amazing:

people from all over the word, heard the emerging

Gospel, that Jesus Christ who was crucified, died and

was buried; then rose again, showed himself to his

disciples and then ascended into Heaven.

Well you might not be alone in thinking that was

dramatic enough and be ready for a little mundane

normality. Indeed as we move into Trinity season (also

called Pentecost or Proper), we are faced the challenge

of living out our faith in the day to day routines and

rhythms of our lives.

We do so, trying to make sense of the things Jesus said

about his Father and the helper he would leave us and

we are to some extent, aided in this task by our

ancestors in faith through the inheritance the doctrine

of the Triune God. The Three in One and One in Three

as the Celtic prayers have it. However, I don’t think it’s

helpful to get too anxious about one’s intellectual

ability to unpack this theological conundrum, important

though it is; it is perhaps one of the most mystical

symbols of our faith. Perhaps it is best understood as

dance of love which we are invited to join.

Jesus sets the scene and like a caller he outlines the

basic steps, but after that, the choice is ours. We will or

won’t we join the dance?

The Trinity is an invitation to the dance of love which

invites us to dosey doe with people, places, nations and

creeds previously unknown to us, that the love at the

heart of the Divine might be revealed. The invitation to

love is also an invitation from love, so that our very

participation becomes the means by which we know

and are known by that mysterious love of God.

So whatever your capability, however unworthy you

might feel, whether you can whirl like a dervish or

simply twitch to the beat; will you answer loves call?

Will you join the dance?

A Message from JP, a congregation member from St. Mary’s Builth:

Senior Drivers Encouraged to Drive On

Senior drivers in Powys have the opportunity to build their

driving confidence further by taking part in a free assessment.

Drive On is a free assessment drive being offered by the council’s

Road Safety Unit for people aged over 55 or for those who need

some support with building confidence in their driving.

As part of the Drive On assessment, participants can choose a

driving instructor from a list supplied to them and telephone them to make a booking. They will meet the

instructor and drive for one hour – either in their car or the instructors. During this confidential

assessment, any safety issues will be discussed so that they can be improved upon.

Sarah Morris, Senior Road Safety Officer, said: “Driving experience is extremely important and research

shows some older drivers do avoid situations where they know they feel anxious – these may include

night time driving, busy towns, fast roads and bad weather. But avoiding these all the time is not always

possible, especially on rural roads.

“This Drive On assessment is one of the ways that senior drivers can improve their driving skills. It is not

about taking your licence off you. The instructor will encourage you to drive safely and in doing so,

keeping you driving and mobile for longer.”

The assessment drive can be tailored to meet the exact needs of the participant to increase their

confidence. As part of the assessment, each participant will receive a free Highway Code for them to keep

and read at their leisure.

The Goshen Project On Thursday 3

rd July 2014 Professor Christianne Glossop (former Chief Vet

for Wales) will be talking about The Goshen Project at a meeting hosted by

The Christian Centre for Rural Wales at The Mid-Glamorgan Building at

7.15pm.

The aim of ‘The Goshen Project’ is to ensure that each farming region of

Wales is covered in prayer and to encourage people to pray for their local

farms specifically. They seek to connect intercessors across Wales to pray for

every farm and farming community, praying blessing and protection for the land, its people and animals. Where

possible they are encouraging intercessors to get to know their local farmers so that they can pray for specific

needs. All farmers are working in increasingly difficult conditions and they want to encourage prayer for them in

their areas of greatest need.

Why is this project called Goshen? Goshen was the province in Egypt where the people of Israel lived between the

time of Joseph and the Exodus. In the time leading up to the Exodus the Lord protected His people and the land of

Goshen from the plagues suffered by the Egyptians. Our farmers are battling modern plagues,

like Bovine TB, that bring devastation to their

herds - constant testing, movement restrictions and

loss of livestock.

They intend to pray strategically for the issues

facing our farming communities, both arable and

livestock farms. Initially they are specifically

seeking the eradication of Bovine TB in the Beef

and Dairy herds of Wales.

‘Nearer to God in a Garden’ – July and August

Lady’s Mantle A common border plant introduced to this country in 1874 from Turkey. It is

an extremely useful and versatile plant as it will grow in any type of soil in

any position. It is slug-proof and rabbit-proof and good as ground cover. Its

velvety leaves and small lime-yellow flowers are useful in floral displays. Its

common name refers to the shape of the leaf resembling the shape of a cloak that could have been worn

by Our Lady. A mantle was considered to be a symbol of the spirit of authority: 1 Kings 19 v.19.

The Latin name Alchemilla mollis refers to its use by the ancient Alchemists. They believed that the

morning dew was one of the ingredients needed for turning base metals to gold. If you look at this plant

in the early morning you will see beaded water droplets collected on its leaves. Mollis means ‘soft’

referring to the feel of the leaves.

Lady’s Mantle will flower throughout the summer. To stop it self-seeding all over the place just remove

the flowers at the end of July before they set seed.

Make Your Cuppa Count

Gwnewch i'ch paned gyfri!

This July churches across Wales will be making their

cuppas count by taking part in Tea for Tearfund... and

you’re invited!

It’s easy to get involved - choose one Sunday in July to

donate the cost of your teas and coffees to Tearfund, to

change the lives of those living in poverty across the

world. If you don’t serve drinks after your service, why

not hold a dedicated tea party or coffee morning?

Taking part in tea for Tearfund means that your church

or group can help Tearfund partners to follow Jesus to

where the need is greatest and most severe - in over 50

countries world wide - changing the lives of some of the

world's poorest families.

One: Set aside a date this coming July (or any time

during the summer months) for your church to host Tea

for Tearfund after your Sunday service. If a Sunday is

not appropriate, why not consider hosting a coffee

morning, a toddler tea or youth group/home group cake-

bake at a more convenient time.

Two: Place a clean, empty teapot on your refreshment table and invite your guests to drop their donation

to Tea for Tearfund in the pot as they drink their cup of tea or coffee. Display the downloadable poster

above (available in English or Welsh) on your table or at your event.

Tea: When ready, send in your donations to Tearfund

Contact Tearfund Wales to us to let us know you are taking part by emailing

[email protected] or on 01437 721 139, leaving your church name, address and post

code. We'll send a free gift from our friends in Kingdom Coffee to the first ten churches

or individuals who let us know they are hosting Tea for Tearfund!

Visit www.tearfund.org/ for more information.
