Parallel parking space
• Where the width of the adjacent sidewalk or available right-of-way exceed 14 feet, an access aisle 60 inches wide minimum must be provided at street level the full length of the parking space and must connect to a pedestrian access route.
• The access aisle must comply with Section 502.4 and must not encroach on vehicular travel lanes.

• Alterations: In alterations where the street or sidewalk
adjacent to the parking spaces is not altered, an access aisle is not required provided the parking spaces are located at the end of the block face.

• Narrow sidewalks: An access aisle is not
required where the width of the adjacent sidewalk or the available right-of-way is less than or equal to 14 feet.
Where an access aisle is not provided, the parking spaces must be located at the end of the block face.

Perpendicular or Angled Parking Spaces
• Where perpendicular or angled parking is provided, an access aisle 96 inches wide minimum must be provided at street level the full length of the parking space and must connect to a pedestrian access route.
• The access aisle must comply with Section 502.4 and must be marked so as to discourage parking in the access aisle.
• Two parking spaces are permitted to share a common access aisle.

Parking meters and parking pay stations
• Location: At parallel parking spaces, parking meters must be located at the head or foot of the parking space.
• Displays and information must be visible from a point located 40 inches maximum above the center of the clear space in front of the parking meter or parking pay station.

Electrical vehicle charging stations
• Operable parts on the charging station intended for operation by the user, including card readers, must comply with Section 309.
• An accessible route must be provided from the access aisle adjacent to the parking space to clear floor space complying with Section 502.11.1 adjacent to the vehicle charging station. When the vehicle is being charged, the accessible route must not be obstructed by the cable between the car and charging station.

Electrical vehicle charging stations
• Protection bollards, curbs or wheel stops must be located so that they do not obstruct the clear floor space required by Section 502.11.1 or the accessible route required by Section 502.11.2.
• Specific sizes for the charging station are not specified. It can be sized for a van or a car.
• Scoping provisions are not provided in the IBC. Some states have specific criteria.

Passenger Loading - Access Aisle Width
• New buildings and facilities In new buildings and facilities, aisles serving vehicular pull-up
spaces must be 67 inches minimum in width. Access aisles must extend the full length of the vehicle pull-up
spaces they serve.

Stairways
• Stairways are not considered part of an accessible route so they do not have any scoping within the IBC.
• Stairways, although they can be part of an accessible means of egress are not scoped from the IBC. The IBC contains requirements within itself.
• Therefore, the following is “best practice” information. It is NOT required to be a part of the design.

Stairway Nosings
• If beveled, the bevel at the leading edge must slope at 45 degrees to the plane of the top surface of the tread and landing and extend for a horizontal distance of ½ inch maximum.

Stairway – Visual Contrast
Visual contrast must comply with either 1 or 2.1. The leading 1 to 2 inches of every tread and landing,
measured horizontally from the leading edge of the nosing, must consist of a solid color having visual contrast of dark-on-light or light-on-dark from the remainder of the tread. The contrasting marking must be durable and must extend from one side of each tread to the other side of each tread.

Tactile signage at stair exits
A sign stating “EXIT” in raised characters and Braille and complying with Sections 703.3 and 703.4 must be provided adjacent to each door to an area of refuge providing direct access to a stairway, an exterior area for assisted rescue, an exit stairway, an exit ramp, an exit passageway and exit discharge.

Accessible Routes through Parking
• Where accessible routes pass through parking facilities, they must be physically separated from vehicular traffic.Exceptions: Accessible routes crossings drive aisles may not be required to
comply with this section Accessible routes only from parking spaces complying with
Section 502 and passenger loading zones complying with Section 503 to accessible entrances may not be required to comply with this section.

Bottle Filling Stations
• A clear floor space positioned for a forward or side approach must be provided.

• Controls for bottle filling stations must be hand operated or automatic. Hand operated controls must comply with Section 309.

• General Exception: Where bottle filling stations are part of the drinking fountain for persons who are standing, the bottle filling station is not required to comply with this section provided a bottle filling station is located at the drinking fountain for persons using wheelchairs.

Toilet Paper Dispenser - General

grab bar, toilet paper dispensers shall be located 24 inches minimum and 42 inches maximum from the rear wall.
• The outlet of the dispenser must be 18inches minimum and 48 inches maximum above the floor.

• Toilet paper dispensers that accommodate a maximum of 2 toilet paper rolls of not more than 5-inch diameter each is permitted to be located 7 inches minimum and 9 inches maximum in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser.
• The outlet of the dispenser must be 15 inches minimum and 48 inches maximum above the floor.

Wheelchair accessible toilet compartment
• Where an alternate wheelchair accessible toilet compartment is provided, the minimum area of the compartment must be 60 inches minimum in width, measured perpendicular to the side wall, and 84 inches minimum in depth, measured perpendicular to the rear wall.

Doors - Exception
• In an alternate wheelchair accessible toilet compartment, the door is permitted to swing into the stall where a clear floor space complying with Section 305.3 is provided within the stall beyond the arc of the door swing.

• The front partition and at least one side partition of wheelchair accessible toilet compartment must provide a toe clearance of 12 inches minimum above the floor and extending 8 inches beyond the compartment side face of the partition, exclusive of partition support members.

Toe Clearance - Exceptions
• Toe clearance at the front partition is not required in a wheelchair accessible toilet compartment greater than 64 inches in depth with a wall-hung water closet, or greater than 67 inches in depth with a floor-mounted water closet.
• Toe clearance at the side partition is not required in a wheelchair accessible toilet compartment greater than 68 inches in width.

Lavatories with enhanced reach range
• New Exceptions: Enhanced reach range faucets are not required
on lavatories provided with automatic faucets where the reach depth to activate the faucets and the reach depth to water outlet is 11 inches minimum.
Enhanced reach range soap dispensers are not required on lavatories provided with automatic dispensers where the reach depth to activate the soap dispensers and the reach depth to the soap outlet is 11 inches maximum.

Signs - Contrast
• Characters and their background shall have a non-glare finish. Characters shall contrast with their background with either light characters on a dark background, or dark characters on a light background.
• The glare from coverings and the finish of pictograms and their fields shall not exceed 19 gloss units (gu) as measured on a 60-degree gloss meter.

percentile of vertical viewing angles for all seats ranked from the seats in the first row to seats in the back row.

a level and clear floor of a minimum size of 24 inches deep and 36 inches wide that is located to provide a direct line of sight from the seating area identified in Section 802.11.3

located so that seating within an arc from the station and measured to the left and to the right 60 degrees within 65 feet horizontal distance from the station is provided with sight lines providing a view of the sign language station from a height of 36 inches to 72 inches above the floor of the station.

lighting facilities capable of providing 10 footcandles of illuminance while signing is underway measured at the center of the floor of the sign language station at a height of 48 inches above the floor.

with a permanent wall less than 10 feet behind the sign language interpreter station, the permanent wall to a height of 96 inches from the finish floor must be considered as a backdrop. The backdrop must provide a flat, smooth surface with a monochromatic, low-luster finish treatment.
Exception: The wall may not be required to comply with this section where a backdrop with a monochromatic, low luster finish treatment is provided.

• Where counters are provided, the accessible portion of the counter-top must extend the same depth as the public portion of the sales and service countertop provided for standing customers.
Exception: In alterations, when the provision of a counter complying with this section would result in a reduction of the number of existing counters at work stations or a reduction of the number of existing mail boxes, the counter may be permitted to have a portion which is 24 inches minimum in length complying with Section 904.3.2 provided that the required clear floor space is centered on the accessible length of the counter.

A clear floor space positioned for a forward approach to the accessible counter must be provided.
Knee and toe clearance complying with Section 306 must be provided under the accessible counter (17-25 inches).
The space between the accessible counter surface and any projection object above the accessible counter must be 12 inches minimum.
