    Significance and Use

5.1 The flash point temperature is one measure of the tendency of the test specimen toform a flammable mixture with air under controlled laboratory conditions. It is only one of a number of properties which must be considered in assessing the overall flammabilityhazard of a material.

    5. !lash point is used in shipping and safety regulations todefine flammable and combustible materials. "ne should consult the particularregulation involved for precise definitions of these classifications.

#"T$ %&The U.S. 'epartment of Transportation ('"T) * and U.S. 'epartment of +abor("S,-) have established that liuids with a flash point under %/.02 (133!) (see #ote1) are flammable4 as determined by these test methods4 for those liuids which have ainematic viscosity of 5.0 mm 6s (cSt) or more at %/.02 or 7.5 mm 6s (cSt) or more at52 (//!)4 or that contain suspended solids4 or have a tendency to form a surface filmwhile under test. "ther classification flash points have been established by thesedepartments for liuids using these test methods.5.% These test methods should be used to measure and describe the properties ofmaterials4 products4 or assemblies in response to heat and an ignition source undercontrolled laboratory conditions and should not be used to describe or appraise the firehazard or fire ris of materials4 products4 or assemblies under actual fire conditions.,owever4 results of these test methods may be used as elements of a fire risassessment which taes into account all of the factors which are pertinent to anassessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use.

5.* These test methods provide the only closed cup flash point test procedures fortemperatures up to %/32 (870!).

    1. Scope1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the flash point of petroleum productsin the temperature range from *3 to %/32 by a manual 9ensy:;artens closed:cupapparatus or an automated 9ensy:;artens closed:cup apparatus4 and thedetermination of the flash point of biodiesel in the temperature range of 83 to 1732 byan automated 9ensy:;artens closed cup apparatus.

#"T$ 1&!lash point determinations above 532 can be performed4 however4 theprecision has not been determined above this temperature. !or residual fuels4 precisionhas not been determined for flash points above 1332. The precision of in:uselubricating oils has not been determined. Some specifications state a '7% minimum
