A fair way to think about CIPA is that it is a work in pro gress. Thats not a bad thing. It just indicates that the work is not com

plete but progress is being made toward

that comple on. And CIPA is making signi cant progress!

With the publishing industry presently undergoing a revolu on, any organiza

on that purports to serve authors and independent publishers needs to adapt to and embrace changes that impact their members ability to be compe ve in the marketplace.

One change CIPA has made in response to present economic reali es is cu ng the 2011 2012 dues in half, making it easier for writers, authors, indie pub lishers, and service providers to join and par cipate in CIPA ac vi es.

The rst monthly mee ng of the new membership year on September 17 is the rst opportunity everyone will have to check out the new Lone Tree Arts Center and the new and improved mee ng agenda that will take ad vantage of the brand new venue.

The format of CIPA College was anoth er change that took place in January to make the College more exible by off ering individual classes at various loca ons at diff erent mes of the year. Five classes that were recorded earlier this year are available for download and several more recordings will be made available this fall.

An example of CIPAs willingness to adapt is the way the new membership year was introduced by holding two events on September 9 in Steamboat Springs. The rst event was a meet and greet with members of SHe Writes Steamboat, CIPAs rst offi cial Affi liate Member group. The second event was a CIPA College Day with two CIPA College classes speci cally requested by the group.

The next CIPA College Day will be held in Fort Collins on October 29. This CIPA College Day, which will include three 50 minute presenta ons, is being hosted by the Northern Colorado Writers Group at the NC Writers Studio located at 108 East Monroe in Fort Collins.

Go to the CIPA website for more infor

ma on. And stay tuned for announcements about two exci ng major new compo nents of CIPA con nuing educa on off er ings for members and nonmembers.

I look forward to seeing you at the Sep tember 17 mee ng, where our panel of expert eBook authors, publishers and specialist will teach you how to become a more eff ec ve digital publisher.

Conver ng My Print Book to eBook: Lessons Learned

As an author and independent publisher, Im always looking for ways to leverage my work. Turning my intellectual property into various products is a pre y obvious solu

on. The emerging popularity of Kindle, iPads and Nooks convinced me that it was

me to convert my printed book, Turn Eye Appeal into Buy Appeal into an ebook. Here are some valuable lessons I learned along the way:

    1. There are many ways to sell and distribute eBooks Depending on how much me and eff ort I wanted to put into the distribu on process, I could either upload the ebook to all the most popular sales sites, or I could use a 3rd party aggregator to get my books listed on the most popular ebook sales sites.

    2. Third party aggregators Aggregators take a cut (some mes a signi cant cut) of each sale. Some aggrega tors also use contracts that are digital rights management (DRM)free. DRM is a proprietary le encryp on that helps publishers limit the illegal sale of copyrighted books . This is very important to me, so I did not use an aggregator.

    3. Direct Portals to Retail Sites I was able to set up my own publishers account with Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google. This allowed me to keep a bigger por on of my sales by selec ng a discount rate of my choice.

    4. Conver ng to eBook format Then I had to convert my book to the proper format requested by each retail site,

    and upload

    the

    ebook

    le

    and

    cover

    image.

    The

    most

popular formats are Mobi and ePub.

    5. Seek the help you need Although InDesign has a feature that allowed me to convert a document into ePub, and Ive seen websites (including Amazons) that claim it is easy and inexpensive to translate a simple le, if you do not know what you are doing , or your boo k has a compli cated layout or lots of pictures, seek the help of experts who specialize in ebook conversion services.

    6. Overseas Service You get what you pay for. I paid a very low price for an overseas ebook conversion service, but I had to spend many hours proo ng the layout and xing inconsistent forma ng errors and checking all the links. In many instanc es headline text was clippe d off and graphics were missing or in the wrong places. A er several months of working with the contractor on both the Mobi and ePub versions, the les were forma ed properly and I was able to upload them to the retail sites.

    7. New Technology and the Lack of Established Standards As with any new technology, standards need to be established, and ebooks are no excep on. There is a lot of debate among developers and publishers regarding a number of issues including ISBN numbers, order of pages, coding that provides consistent results on every version of ea ch device and so ware, consistent image size and resolu on requirements for cover and interior graphics, forma ng that resembles books, naviga on, whether the devices supports color imagery, etc.

    8. Check your les on all the ebook so ware readers and devic es. If you dont own a Kindle, Nook or iPad, nd a friend who does. Download Adobe Digital Edi ons and Kindle for Mac/

PC. Look at your book on each one and make sure everything looks and works properly.
