ABOUT THE PLAY
The plot of The Student Prince is a simple one: Boy leaves a cloistered home forschool. Boy meets girl. Boy is forced to leave girl. Boy...well, you'll see how itends soon enough.
What makes the play, operetta, really, unique and beloved, is its music, and theuncanny ability of the music to catch the spirit and emotions of an era long pastand make them live again. How did this come to happen?Sigmund Romberg was born in Hungary in 1887, studied music in Vienna when the'world lived for Viennese music, and then moved to New York in 1911. By 1924 hehad written the music for 32 shows, none of them memorable. But then, with hisfather critically ill and himself about to be married, he felt a complusion to provethat he was a composer of merit. He borrowed material from his own backgroundin Europe: his student days, his own devoted mentor, his brief affair with abarmaid, and his family ties with the aristocracy, and wove them into a lushmusical tapestry. It was a peak he would never duplicate despite his effortsthrough 33 more musical scores.Enough history. Sit back and let the music sweep you into the past. The presentwill return all too soon. _ Ri ••.•J( 1=111
