Member Development
COR is A.O.K.
It doesn't matter whether your campus does formal recruitment, informalrecruitment, partially structured recruitment or no structure at allrecruitment. These tips will provide you some great ways to help youprepare your chapter to recruit new members every single day of theyear. You still have some time to recruit this spring to achieve yoursemester recruitment goals!
Small Normal Friend Activities COR is not about the big, costly events, but about small normal friendactivities. Using names from your Names List, call and invite women tothe movies, to lunch or dinner, to workout, things that you normallywould do with your friends and get to know her.
Chapter Recruitment Challenges Challenge each chapter member to meet at least one new person eachweek – or two, or three! Announce and encourage the chapter at eachchapter meeting.
People join People Meet her and make her your friend, then introduce her to Tri Sigma.
We have a names list, now what? So, your chapter has spent time doing the mind jogger activity or donea 5 for 5 drive to create a names list of potential members. You have
pdfcrowd.comopen in browser customize free license
typed in all of the names and information in a nice, neat spreadsheet. Now what? What do you do with all those names? Here is a quick andeasy way to put that names list to use this week and next fall duringCOR!
• Break the chapter into teams and have each team callone person that they put on the names list and get to knowher better. Go to the movies, study, go to a campus eventtogether, meet in the student center for lunch, getafternoon coffee, meet to workout, etc.
• Remember the rule of plus one. Take the number ofpotential new members and have the same number ofmembers plus one. (One potential new member with 2members or 2 potential new members with 3 members, etc.)
• Make her your friend and then introduce her to TriSigma. See if she is interested in joining. This process maytake a week or it may take a month. If she isn't, move on toanother woman you put on the names list.
Put that names list to use and meet those women!Good luck.
Early Alumnae Status 101
Can a collegiate member go early "alum"? Is there such a status? Let'ssee…our National Bylaws define an alumna as:
pdfcrowd.comopen in browser customize free license
1. A member in good standing who is no longer enrolled asan undergraduate in a college or university where a SigmaSigma Sigma chapter exists.
2. A collegiate member who has been granted alumnaestatus as a result of redevelopment or chapter closure.
3. A member who returned to school after a prolongedabsence (meaning more than a year) and does not want tocontinue with her membership as a collegiate.
Also from the National Bylaws, The Circle Degree shall be given toinitiated Sigma Sigma Sigma alumna. So let's translate and bust somemyths:
1. If a member has an internship or will be student teaching, she go canthrough Circle Degree or Send On early and be an alumnae during herlast year in college. MYTH!
• Facts:
•Even if a member is enrolled in one credit hour, she shouldbe a fully participating collegiate member. Most campusesgive credit for internships and student teaching. If theyaren't in town or won't have the time, they should apply forInactive Status or Special Consideration.
•Circle Degree may be given to any alumna. It is not theceremony that makes one an alumna! Graduation is one wayto be an alumna, as is being withdrawn for a prolongedabsence. So share with your seniors who receive Circle

absence. So share with your seniors who receive CircleDegree before graduation, that is not license to ignore therules! They can (and should) still be sent to Honor Council.AND after graduation, all alumnae are still expected topresent Tri Sigma in a positive light. We often have RiskManagement investigation in late April and May due to thechoices of seniors and recent graduates – coming tochapter events intoxicated, events with alcohol such as barcrawls after graduation or planned for seniors, drinking andwearing t-shirts which clearly communicate they are TriSigma's. Don't let this happen to you chapter – be proactiveand educate all members.
2. If a member is Inactive or a 5th Year Senior, they are alumnae.MYTH!
• Facts:
• Inactive Status, 5th Year Senior Status, and SpecialConsideration are special Collegiate Statuses…not alumnae.Even if a member receives this special status, they are stillconsidered a collegiate member.
3. If a member is Inactive or 5th Year Senior, they can't be sent toHonor Council. MYTH!
• Facts:
•Again, these are collegiate statuses. A member must be in
pdfcrowd.comopen in browser customize free license
good standing to have such a status. If they areinappropriate or misrepresent Tri Sigma, they may mostcertainly be sent to Honor Council and their special statuscould be revoked.
Bottom line, a member cannot just decide to go early alumnae statusbecause they've given their time and made their contributions. If thereare special circumstances, take advantage of Inactive Status, 5th YearSenior status, or request Special Consideration. Otherwise, a membershould be fully participating. Remember, Tri Sigma is not just acommitment made for a school term or during your undergraduateyears…it is a lifetime commitment and benefit.
If you have other questions on alumnae status or special collegiatestatuses, e-mail your Regional Consultant.

CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER, DALLAS, TXFoundation staff recently visited Children'sMedical Center in Dallas – one of the hospitalsthat the Foundation supports with fellowshipfunding annually. The medical center consists

proper medical care.
Look for a video of the visit on the Sigma Sigma Sigma FoundationFacebook page!
Eight play therapy rooms are spaced throughout the medical center, andall rooms are considered "No Hurt Zones" where doctors cannot weartheir white coats or give any medical procedures to the patients. Therooms are planned to amuse patients and to distract them from theirmedical conditions. The center has more than 30 play therapists onstaff, and the Foundation funds one of them (plus an additionaltherapist at North Carolina Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill).
These two centers are the primary teaching hospitals forplay/child life/recreational therapists. After leaving thesehospitals, a therapist goes on to work throughout the U.S.,thus making the scope of the Foundation's funding felt inmany cities and states.
Collegiate chapters can tour the medical center at any time, and thestaff says that the hospital loves seeing a sea of purple when Tri Sigmasvisit. The medical center is always looking for donations such as books, toys, stuffed animals, arts and crafts items. You can also volunteer atthe medical center. If you would like to schedule a tour, become avolunteer, or donate items to the play therapy rooms, please contactNancy Benedict at [email protected] or Cindy Harms [email protected] for more details.
