DEAR READERCONTENTIn planning this year’s Derby Days events, we were presented with a great amount of enthusiasm by all of sororities and the Ole Miss community alike. During the planning period, we realized how important the need is for philanthropic contribution to the charities in the Oxford/Lafayette community. This event would not have been possible without the participation and cooperation from each sorority. Although we were not able to hold all of the events that were planned this year, everyone at the Sigma Chi Fraternity thanks all of the participants in the annual blood drive. Appreciation for your support echoes throughout the Lafayette area and the state of Mississippi as a whole.

Sincerely,Zach Harrington and Emerson George[Philanthropy Chairmen]

MISSISSIPPI BLOOD SERVICESMississippi Blood Services starts it’s five-day drive to collect the most gallons of blood in the State of Mississippi. In the past three years, Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi has set the record for the largest week long blood drive in MS Blood Services’ history. Each year Sigma Chi donates over 700 units of blood.

MONEY DROPA table is set up in front of the Student Union for sororities to drop coins into their respective jars. Points are awarded to the sororities by the amount of coins dropped. Cash and checks do not count towards the point system, but are accepted.

COACH SELECTIONMembers of the Sigma Chi Fraternity are chosen to represent each of the nine sororities on campus. They must perform a dance number in front of all the sororities and Sigma Chi members. The sorority with the most spirit for their team wins points.

THE DERBYAn anonymous member of Sigma Chi will hide the derby at a location on the campus of Ole Miss. One clue will be posted about the whereabouts of the

derby per day not found. The first sorority to find the hidden derby will be awarded a certain amount of points.

DERBY DAYSThe Saturday of the week of Derby Days, sororities will head over to the Intramural Fields, located southwest of the main campus. Here, each sorority will compete in field games. The games include: an obstacle course, flag tag, bombs away, and tug-of-war. Following these events, each sorority will present their Queen and compete in a themed dance competition. Referees for the field games are members of Sigma Chi and judges for the dance are Alumni and friends of Sigma Chi.

OXFORD MEDICAL MINISTRIES

This year, proceeds from Derby Days will benefit the Oxford Medical Ministries. Oxford Medical Ministries is a private, non-profit, community based organization committed to providing compassionate, quality healthcare at no charge to low income, uninsured working adults of Lafayette and Yalobusha counties. The Medical Ministries team is made up of volunteers that selflessly give their time back to the community by providing their pro bono services.

They currently are serving 696 patients and in 2013 hope to raise more money for operations so that they can serve more of our community.

MANNA

Another portion of the proceeds from Derby Days will benefit Manna. During the Fall and Spring semesters, the Episcopal Church at Ole Miss along with St. Peter’s Oxford, hosts Manna: A Feeding Ministry, for less-fed residents of the Oxford Housing Authority, referrals from

Interfaith Compassion Ministry, and others on Thursday afternoons from St. Peter’s

Kitchen. Participation in Manna is usually accepted as a form of community service.

Most volunteer shifts last for no more than one hour (between 2:00 and 5:30 p.m.). They appreciate all who are able to assist with this important servant ministry.

Mackenzie Chapel is a senior hospitality major from St. Louis, Missouri. When she is not learning how to clean houses, cook for her future husband (hopefully a Sigma Chi) and balance a checkbook, you can find her planning social events for her sorority. She grew up being the only girl of three older brothers, but can still beat any of them in a round of golf. Most people don’t know that she is French Canadian and can speak fluent French. Sigma Chi jusqu’à moi meurs!

Alessandra Richards is a journalism major with an emphasis on public relations from Delaplane, Virginia. Her favorite movie is Clueless. She plans to spend the Summer in London and then move back to Washington, D.C. in the Fall. She hopes to work in Public Relations. She says that she loves Sigma Chi because they have the cutest and smartest boys.

Lauren Mayo is a senior marketing major from Memphis, Tennessee. Upon graduation, she plans to work as a consultant and ultimately pursue a Master’s degree in Business Administration. In her free time, Lauren enjoys cheering for Ole Miss Rebel athletics, and she is very excited about the upcoming football season. Lauren would like to thank the men of Sigma Chi for their hard work coordinating Derby Days and supporting Oxford Medical Ministries and Mississippi Blood Services. She would like to thank her Phi Mu sisters for the honor of representing them and wishes them the best of luck at this year’s Derby Days events.

Lydia Warren is a senior marketing major from Brookhaven, Mississippi. She is seeking a career in Sports Marketing after graduating this May. She is an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority where she has served on Public Relations and Shamrock Committees. She holds deep ties with Sigma Chi Fraternity through both family and close friends. Throughout college she has enjoyed spending her time at the Ole Miss Golf Course where she not only works, but enjoys playing as well. Derby Days is one of her favorite events at Ole Miss because she gets the opportunity to meet men of good character, students of fair ability, with ambitious purposes, congenial disposition, that are possessed of good morals, have a high sense of honor, and a deep sense of personal responsibility.

Shayna Ruth is sophomore Chemical Engineering major from Henryetta, Oklahoma. As a member of Kappa Alpha Theta she currently serves as the event director for 2013. She is also a member of The American Institute of Chemical Engineers and The Society of Women Engineers. Shayna has enjoyed her past two years at Ole Miss and plans to continue her education there after obtaining her Bachelors degree.

Mary Keith Jackson is a junior art major from Nashville, Tennessee. Her claim to fame is being a professional Rebel fan. She is so proud of her Tri Delta sisters and is happy to represent them for these fine Derby Days. If she is not painting in the studio, she is probably watching Comedy Central on the couch. The Sigma Chi boys are her favorite and she can’t wait to celebrate Derby Days with them.

AOΠ

Meghann Beamer is a senior banking and finance major from Alexandria, Virginia. She has served as the AOΠ rush chair for the past two years and has loved every second of it. In her free time she enjoys watching The Office and sipping on a Hurricane at Funky’s. She has loved Derby Days since her freshman year, even when she passed out after giving blood at the Sigma Chi house. She is so excited to represent AOΠ as Derby Day Queen!

Katie Canon is a sophomore special education major from Dallas, Texas. She is a 3rd generation member of the Chi Omega sorority. She attended Highland Park High School where she was on the track and cross country team. She was Vice President of the Best Buddies Club, Programs Chair for Hilites Club, and Rose Chair for 65 Roses (a charity benefiting cystic fibrosis). A LOOK BACKIn 1922, the Alpha Beta Chapter of Sigma Chi began a philanthropy event known as Channingway Derby at the University of California-Berkeley. Shortly after, the Beta Sigma Chapter at the University of Tennessee Knoxville planned for a similar function. After their success, other nearby chapters started planning the same event known as Derby Day. These events spread quickly and grew to become the Fraternity’s leading charitable event nationwide, raising over $5 million for charities such as the Children’s Miracle Network and the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Derby Day was brought to the Eta Chapter during the 1962 - 1963 school year. Year after year the events during that day and now week have grown. The money raised through the many events goes

towards one Oxford/Lafayette organization. In years past, recipients have included Oxford Medical Ministries, Mississippi Family Relief Fund, Manna Feeding Ministries, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, Young Life, and Hope for Africa. Annually, the Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi raises between $35,000 - $50,000.

1988 Derby Day, Final Party, Saturday night at the end of Derby Week.

Some active members had written a letter to Joe Walsh of The Eagles earlier that year telling him about Derby Day. The night of the party, the band we had hired was setting up on the back deck, when a big black tour bus pulls up to the House. Out steps none other than Joe Walsh. For a fair trade of some party favors and a Pledge Jersey, he proceeded to play with his band long into the wee hours the next morning. Needless to say we dismissed the band we had previously hired.

Thousands of people crowded the old Sigma Chi House, reaching from the front of the house all the way through what was then the ΣAE house (now the Sig Ep House). A night that any of us who were there at the time will never forget!!!!

In Hoc!Barry Holcomb, 1991

MEMORIESMissy Cleveland was a Playboy centerfold and maybe playmate of the year. Some of the guys, John Newcomb, decided that since Missy was from Jackson, Miss. that we should give her a call and invite her to Derby Day and DAMN if she didn’t come. I’m still looking for pictures of Silky Sullivan landing the helicopter in the middle of the field. At that time, Derby Day was held behind the now band hall where there is still an open field. The last event was between coeds between each sorority pillow fitting on a greased pole over a mud hole, which is now center field.

2013 DERBY DAYS STATS

Due to University sanctions, changes were made to the point system for Derby Days. The sorority with the highest percentage turnout for donating blood wins the beloved Derby Days Cup. Kappa Delta was the overall winner. We had an outstanding number of people that donated, even through the situations at hand. We thank you for these amazing numbers:
