RSESA-26

Hi Folks,

This is my second letter for the Sight Glass for

the summer. I hope it helps Karen fill the pages

so she won’t have to send out a blank newslet-

ter. Karen’s family is going through a very dif-

ficult time and it just adds more stress in her life

to have to beg for input from us. Do we want to

continue having a Sight Glass? Maybe we

should discuss this at the annual conference.

We have had a wonderful summer filled with lots of fun. The

Popeye’s Cajun Surf and Turf was a big success. We had lots

of fun with family and friends and was thoroughly entertained

by Captain Jim Is Magic. His magic show was great and he is

a great DJ, including lots of different music. His wife did a

beautiful job face painting for the kids and some wild adults.

His son performed juggling acts and stilt walking. He also did

balloon twisting for all. I am almost finished with the 20 year

old quilt. We traced around Vegas and Tyler’s hands on freezer

paper so I could cut them out and iron them on quilt, then stitch

the outline into the quilt and remove the paper. A few more

handprints and I will be finished. My brother won a regional

championship shooting pool, so we went with him to Las Ve-

gas to play in the nationals. Did we really need an excuse to

go to Vegas? It was lots of fun and boy was it hot. We are still

entertaining for Senior Citizens. We went to one that was

sponsored by Guilford County Community Outreach and had a

very nice catered meal, plus played games with the seniors at

our table. And to top it off, the leader said they would send us

a check for entertaining. Woohoo!

I look forward to seeing everyone in Pittsburgh. The local

folks have planned a great conference. Hope you can join in

the fun. Try to bring something to raffle in the hospitality

room. Thanks in advance.

See you soon,

Gail Paschal, RSESA International President RSESA-7

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are have a wonderful summer.

We’ve had lots of rain, but I think the lazy

days of hot summer are here now for a while.

We’ve been spending a lot of time at the

Greensboro Aquatic Center, taking the grand-

kids to swim lessons and some play time, too.

We spent one week helping with vacation Bi-

ble school at church. What a workout, teach-

ing the kids the songs with all the actions. I crocheted a

small afghan for Vegas in her favorite colors, pink and pur-

ple. I have been working on a quilt I started about twenty

years ago. I remember now, why I put it in a drawer, but am

determined to finish it this time. My sisters and I continue to

entertain for the senior citizens. Tommy goes with us to car-

ry the piano. I love my “roadie”. My sister, Karen, plays the

guitar and my brother has joined us a few times to play the

bass guitar. My Mom went one time and sung a song with

us. She was the hit of the night. Wendy won a “Cajun

Bash”, a party for 100 people sponsored by Popeye’s Chick-

en. We’re having that here on July 27. Company representa-

tives from Atlanta, GA, will be here to set up and take pic-

tures. We’re really excited about it. Food and entertainment,

two of our favorite things! We’re looking forward to seeing

everyone this fall in Pittsburgh. I hope you all are making

plans to be there. The folks there have been working hard to

make sure we all have a good conference.

That’s all for now, enjoy the rest of the summer and be safe!

A do-not-miss activity for ladies and men: a Just Ducky tour on Friday,

October 25. The duck boat tour leaves right from Station Square and takes

about an hour. The duck boats (DUKW) are converted WWII military ve-

hicles. The DUKW was used in amphibious operations throughout the

Mediterranean and Pacific, including Operation D-Day in 1944. Once

we’re on board, the DUKW will transport us throughout downtown Pitts-

burgh, then over the bridge to the North Shore area, then drive right into

the river for a short boat trip back to Station Square. If you’ve never done

this before, make sure you do! It’ll be a fun trip. http://

www.justduckytours.com/

An Usborne Book Fair benefitting Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will

be held in the hotel on Saturday, October 26, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Books that are purchased here will be delivered to Children’s Hospital of

Pittsburgh for distribution to the young patients.

Finally, this year’s conference will go out with a BANG – literally! Satur-

day’s Closing Banquet will include a murder mystery show. Watch for

clues while enjoying the drama and excitement of the evening’s events.

Pittsburgh has so much more to offer: Point State Park, which marks the

confluence of our three rivers; Macy’s shopping downtown; the Strip Dis-

trict with unique shops and restaurants; Rivers Casino; live theater; and

scenic Mount Washington located just above Station Square, accessed by

incline. For more information about shops, restaurants and attractions at

Station Square, go to http://www.stationsquare.com/. For more infor-

mation about things to see and do in and around Pittsburgh, go to http://

www.visitpittsburgh.com/.

And be sure to find Joe and I, or any other member of the Conference

Committee, when you’re here for suggestions on exciting and interesting

places to visit. We might even be able to help you get there!

We’re looking forward to welcoming one and all to beautiful Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania – the City of Champions!

We’re excited to welcome everyone to our beautiful city! This year’s con-

ference at the Sheraton at Station Square is a prime location for sightsee-

ing, culture, food, music, relaxation and other enjoyment. Several activi-

ties are already planned for the conference week. We’ve listed the web-

sites in case you want to explore on your own before you get here.

A trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in the scenic Laurel High-

lands of Ligonier, PA is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22. This full day

excursion departs from the Sheraton hotel at about 8:00 a.m. and returns

around 4:00 p.m. This is sure to be a spectacular day; not only is Falling-

water unique and beautiful, but it is located in a lush wooded area which

hopefully will be in all its colorful autumn glory. After the tour, we’ll en-

joy a luncheon at Brady’s restaurant arranged by Shelva Hauer. If time

permits, we may hop over for a tour of a local glass factory, Smith Glass.

http://www.fallingwater.org/

The activity for Wednesday, October 23 is a day of cultural sightseeing

which will leave from the hotel around 9:30 am. Our first stop is Phipps

Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a beautiful indoor facility housing 17

distinct botanical experiences allowing you to immerse yourself in one of

the world's greenest public gardens. After spending some time at Phipps,

we’ll head over to a Pittsburgh favorite, Gullifty’s Restaurant, for lunch.

(For fans of Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood, you may recognize the name

“Gullifty” from when X the Owl would exclaim “Nifty Gullifty!” Fred

Rogers called Pittsburgh home, and you can visit his memorial statue lo-

cated just across the river if you like.) Save room for dessert – Gullifty’s

is most famous for its spectacular sweets! We’ll need to do some walking

to work off our big lunch, so next we’ll visit the Carnegie Museums of Art

and Natural History. You’ll have a few hours for an unguided visit

throughout these two adjoining museums. The museums are located in the

heart of Pittsburgh’s Oakland section, which houses the main campuses of

the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University, to name a

few. If it’s a nice day out, there may be time to walk around the area, per-

haps visit the Cathedral of Learning or beautiful Heinz Chapel, both locat-

ed on the Pitt campus. http://phipps.conservatory.org/; http://

www.carnegiemuseums.org/

On Thursday, October 24, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m., Denise Ziegelbein

will host a Pampered Chef show right in our hotel. Proceeds from this

show will benefit the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh.

RSESA-12

Greetings from the Commonwealth of Virginia

The Conference is almost upon us, which means that we’ll

be seeing each other soon. Since the last issue of the Sight

Glass, I’ve had some interesting experiences. I went to

Alaska on a cruise, and it was fun. Mom, Dad, and I went

up for a long week, starting off in Seattle, Washington for

2 nights, to visit with my nephew & niece-in-law (I don’t

know if that’s an actual term, but it sounded good). While we were there,

I found out that I’m going to be a Great Uncle (they’re having a baby, due

around the end of November). She came home wearing a shirt that said

“Bake at 98.6 degrees for 40 weeks”! We left there on Friday, and caught

a shuttle bus up to Vancouver, BC, where we boarded the ship (Royal

Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas). We left the ship in Seward, Alaska,

and caught another shuttle bus up to Anchorage, where we flew back to

Virginia. It was a fantastic week, and I’d go back again in a heartbeat.

Mom & Dad seemed to enjoy the trip, especially with it starting off by

finding out that they’re going to be great-grandparents.

Since then, I’ve been to Boston for a week, to attend a training class for

work. It was a good class, though the days were long, but I passed. Work

is in full swing, and so far (knock on wood), I’m doing pretty good (no

worse, but maybe somewhat better). I’m still active in the US Coast

Guard Auxiliary and having fun out on the water.

I want to extend an invitation to come on by the Hospitality Room at the

Conference. You’ll see a lot of familiar faces there, and hopefully you’ll

also see some new ones as well. Whether day or night, we’ll do our best

to make you feel welcome. It’s my understanding that Marilyn Roth, CM

(past Region 2 Director) will be joining us at the Conference. All who

have had the privilege & pleasure of knowing her, can attest that she is a

super lady. A short while back, she had to step down as Director, and

we’ve been missing her smiling face ever since. Now, she’s back with us.

The Pittsburgh area is going to host the hospitality room during the day-

time and the Ray, Bob and Mac hospitality gang will come on duty in

the evening. Not sure yet which nights the room will be open but look

for the room number when you check in at the hotel. The daytime crew

is planning on a lot of goodies and of course, the nighttime crew will

have goodies and drinks for all. Oh yes, we also need door prizes to help

with the cost of the hospitality room. come by during the evenings and

say "hello" to the current President of the Auxiliary, Gail Paschal. Bring

you door prizes to donate, say "hello" to Gail, have a drink or two and

then buy some tickets for the door prizes and we all will have a great

time!

Mac and I will be driving to the conference and of course, I get to spend

two nights at Casinos on the way. That always makes for a great trip. I

think we have 8 1/2 hours the first day, about 7 hours the second day

and 7 hours the last day. That shouldn't be too bad a drive. I do want to

mention to anyone driving in on Sunday as we are going to do, that the

Pittsburgh Steelers have a home game that Sunday and traffic could be a

little crazy. The hotel recommended coming in during the game and the

game starts at about 4:25PM. Maybe that way the traffic won't be as

bad.

I again want to thank all of you that attended the hospitality room in

Charleston to visit with me. I think all that came had a good time. Won-

der if the weather in Pittsburgh will be rainy and cool as the last two

years have been at conference?

Mac and I are looking forward to seeing everyone again. The confer-

ence means a lot to us and we really enjoy being with our RSES and

RSESA friends.

Sure makes the time fly by. We look forward to seeing

Hi – Where has the

Summer gone? Schools

are starting, vacations

are wrapping up. In

less than two months

we will be gathering again. Pittsburgh, PA

- here we come. Plans have been underway for months and it sounds like

we will have a very good conference. This picture was of a few members

gathered at the 2012 conference hospitality room.

During the next couple of months you will have an opportunity to help

raise funds for our 2013 “Make Life Worthwhile” Fundraiser. You can

do this even if you are unable to join us in Pittsburgh. As a Pampered

Chef Consultant, I have the opportunity to assist in coordinating this pro-

ject. You have the opportunity to share this with your friends and family.

The Auxiliary is raising funds for The Women's Center & Shelter Cen-

ter of Greater Pittsburgh. It is an organization that assists women in

domestic abuse situations. For more information about the organization,

check out their website. http://www.wcspittsburgh.org/

To qualify as a fundraiser Pampered Chef requires that we have a mini-

mum of $150.00 in sales. When we hit the $600 mark, the contribution is

15% of the sales. When we held this fundraiser at the Conference in

2011 we raised about $200.00. We are hoping to break this record with

the help of you and your friends at home.

Starting September 1st, you can go to my web-

site http://www.pamperedchef.biz/

mszigyskitchen - look under the Features sec-

tion – International RSESA Fundraiser October

2013. This will give you step-by-step instruc-

tions on how to place an order. The show will be closed on October 27th.

The following week, all orders will be shipped directly to the guest. Any

orders that are placed that are for $75.00 or more will qualify for a FREE

gift from Pampered Chef. You will have your choice of either our Small

Micro-Cooker or our Large Micro-Cooker.

If you should have any questions in this process, or do not have access to

the Internet but are interested in helping, please feel free to give me a call

on my cell: 573-690-0881 or send me an email via my pampered chef

email [email protected].

Sight Glass Editor Karen Krepcik gave her report. She was commended

on the excellent job she does. Gail has talked her into one more year.

She would appreciate receiving articles early so she can get them in for

printing on time. Her daughter in law remains very ill and assisting in

her care requires a great deal of time. Please be patient as she tries to

complete the Sight Glass on time.

The Make Life Worthwhile Award for Region was awarded to Region 9

Midwest Auxiliary for their gift to Ronald McDonald House. The Auxil-

iary salutes you and your $25 check will help you continue your good

works.

Special recognition was given to 25 year members Cleta Newton, Ama-

rillo Chapter and Sandra McKendall, Redstick Chapter. Their Certifi-

cates and pins will be delivered by President McCarthy. There were no

50 year members this year.

President McCarthy asked for a moment of silence for those we lost this

past year. Merle Lippert and Milliard Thigpen were mentioned.

Unfinished business- None.

New Business- Motions were made and passed for donations to Happy

Wheels (our charity for this year) and Mid-Southeast Auxiliary for the

Hospitality Room. A thank you to them for a job well done.

The nominating committee presented the proposed slate. Nominations

were requested and received from the floor. The proposed slate was

elected by acclamation.
