S pring is here, and I noticed the dogwoods blooming while I was out turkey hunting recently. They reminded me of my college days at the University of Alabama, the Mansion on the Hill, and when the dogwoods were blooming in the front yard. For some alumni, those were best four years of their life—maybe the best six or more for a few! You all know what I am talking about because you are Psi DKEs. We all remember our time at the DKE house. So when “Mama” called everybody stepped up. The capital campaign was one of the most successful in the nation with $4.09 mil- lion raised and 56% of alumni contributing! Many thanks to all who contributed their time and donations toward the proj- ect as it has officially ended. I hope everyone has had a chance to see the new Chapter House at its new location, overlooking the Walk of Champions at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It is an awesome facil- ity for the undergraduates with state-of-the-art improvements and a great place for the alumni to gather and reminisce about our times at the University and the DKE house. The new Chapter House will also be a great recruiting tool to attract new pledge members. This campaign could not have been successful without the help of the many alumni who came on board from the start. I would like to thank Zeb Hargett ’77, my co-chairman; John McNiel ’79, who orchestrated the building project from day one; Angus ’64 and David Cooper ’67 for all of their help and support; Holmes and Holmes Architects, and Bruce McAlpin ’81 for interior design. Also thanks to Larry Howell ’92 for keeping the books; Black Chaffe ’83 for compiling all of the DKE alumni data; Alex Fleming ’09 for being our DKE undergraduate building supervisor; the DKE undergraduates for back-to-back Lion’s Trophies; and last but not least, John Ziegelmeyer and Pennington and Company who directed us through this very successful capi- tal campaign process. Again, we cannot thank our donors enough for your support of the project. We know many of you took advantage of the five-year pledge period, and we hope you will make those payments until your pledge is complete. Feel free to pay off any part of your pledge in advance if you’d like! It was an honor and a pleasure to serve as a co-chairman on this campaign. I hope you can come see what we’ve all accomplished, the new DKE house. As for our next steps, we will continue sending you our Sighs of Psi newsletters twice a year. As well, we will work on enhancing our alumni relations programs, events, and other communication with you. Thank You, Volunteers

We would like to thank the following alumni for their tireless effortsthroughout the campaign to see the house project through to comple-

tion, whether it was making phone calls to alumni for pledges, making sure theconstruction was on schedule and on budget, or whatever the case may havebeen. As well, we thank all of our class leaders for their hard work. We have atop-notch facility that will benefit our DKE Chapter for many years to come.

WHY I GAVEAllen Yeilding ’78 Views DKE as

Invaluable to College Career

Icontributed to the develop-ment of the new house for

several reasons. I feel DKE addsan invaluable asset to the fouryears of college at the Universityof Alabama—your DKE experi-ence will be an asset for the restof your life, and there is a greatreturn from the investment to thealumni and state.

DKE not only provides activeswith a place to socialize, it givesthem opportunity to learn theattributes of a good person, suchas honesty, dependability, trust, reliability, and humility. DKEmen learn how to deal with stress and adversity, but not alone. The brothers have the opportunity to help each other with aca-demics and begin developing invaluable contacts, both amongstpeers and with alumni. Later in life, DKE provides a place toreturn for an enjoyable weekend with generations of Psi brothers.

I am a hematologist/oncologist in Birmingham. My wife, Cindy, and I have four children: Christopher, a graduate of UA and UALaw School, is an attorney. He and his wife, Elizabeth, havegiven us our first two grandchildren, Christopher Jr., andEvelyn. Our second son, Frank Allen, a former UA baseballplayer, works with AXA at UA. Our daughter, Vivian (a Kappa),is a pre-medicine senior at UA and wants to be a surgical oncol-ogist. Allen Jr. is a high school senior heading to UA in thefall—the last DKE hopeful. My father, Frank A. Yeilding ’53,was a DKE. If Allen Jr. joins, we will represent three proud gen-erations of DKE men.

Philanthropy and Community Service Top Priorities We have been involved in many university and com-munity philanthropy events this semester. SinceJanuary, we have participated in major events, such asRelay for Life, and hosted our annual Easter egg huntfor the children of Hannah Home. The Easter EggHunt benefits mothers and children from abused fami-lies in Tuscaloosa. This event spawned from our annu-al Hannah Home Christmas party. We are busy plan-ning for our next philanthropy project, a cancerresearch fundraising fair at Water Oaks Farm outsideof Tuscaloosa. As a reward for our continued campusleadership in philanthropy service, the Psi Chapter waspresented the award for most canned food donated tothe Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Drive. This is adistinguished campus renowned award, and we areproud to say that we have won it three years in a row.

DKE Members Secure SGA PositionsWhen the polls closed and all the votes were talliedfor the 2009 Student Government Association, DKEclaimed two major offices. Sophomore Jake Gray’11 from Decatur, Ala., was elected senator for theCollege of Commerce and Business Administration, and junior James Fowler ’10 from Madison, Ala.,claimed victory in the race for vice president forexternal affairs. The Chapter is extremely proud ofour members’ involvement in SGA, and we know asleaders of the University their actions will lead thePsi chapter.
