•GPIO
• SL808x provides up to 3 General Purpose I/O.
• All of 1.8V logic.
• Sink/Source up to 8mA.
• Can be chosen for 8-wire UART application.
•SPI
• Upto 26Mb/s.
• Able to be used on SL808xT only via Open AT.
• The same pins can be chosen as part of the 8-wire UART.
• No support of AT commands over this interface as it requires
proprietary lines to enable the bi directional requirement for AT
commands.

• Available with voice enabled units (SL8080/2/4 plus T variants)
• All GSM vocoders
• Enhanced Full Rate (EFR),
• Full Rate (FR).
• WCDMA Adaptive Multirate (AMR) encoders
• MO and MT calling
• Echo cancellation – generic cancellation, no specific certifications, should
consider it to be designed for handsets.
• Digital audio
• Runs in master mode only.
• Supports the following compression, linear (13-bit), A-Law (8-bit) and µ-
Law (8-bit)
• Supports
• 2.048 MHz short frame sync (PCM) operation
• 128 kHz long frame sync (AUX_PCM) operation

Audio
Page
Analog Audio Interface
The SL8080/82/84 supports both a differential analog interface and PCM
digital audio, and allows dynamic run-time selection of the appropriate
interface
Analog signals
• MIC1_P MIC1_N
• SPK_P SPK_N
The module does not provide on-board filtering except for a 0.1µF DC blocking
capacitor on microphone lines (MIC1_P and MIC1_N).
The host device should:
• Provide any necessary bias and signal filters.
• Terminate audio lines with pull-down resistors if the lines will not be used.
Sierra Wireless Proprietary and Confidential. 35
Page
GPS is provided on the QC chipset. Main points
• Controlled through AT commands with its own USB endpoint.
• A-GPS service is provided by QC called 1Xtra, around a 40KB file.
• Can be run independent to the 2/3G radio although greatest
performance is achieved when attached to a network.
• Current consumption is a flat 15mA regardless of mode i.e. tracking,
acquisition, etc.
• Active antenna can be used but the SL8 does not supply the bias
current, application design must do this. It will accept upto 5V on the
antenna port.
• GPS should be viewed as the same type that is deployed on mobile
phones with a similar performance. If cutting edge performance is
required it will not be able to compete with latest offerings from GPS
modules.

SL808xx Compatibility between SL6 and SL80xx families
Matthew Lewis
Page
Overall aim is to enable design of a single PCB to give the
2G/3G compatibility. This is easily achievable if the
differences are taken into account. In addition to this we
are able to offer advantages over our competitors.
Pins that are the same across the family are
• USB
• SIM
• 1.8V UART
• PCM
• Analog audio – competitors do not offer this
• Power
• Ground
Other pins are dealt with later in this presentation.

UART
• SL6087 has two UART’s, primary @ 2V8, secondary @1v8.
• SL8xxx, due to be being on a 3G platform has a single UART @1V8.
• SL8 UART has been run out of the SL6 secondary UART pins to
maintain voltage compatibility.
• Competitors offer ONLY 1 single 1V8 UART and hence they have to
implement a level shifter to work with their 3V3 micro.
• Customers can design their 2G application to be 3G compatible and
hence future proof without a level shifter due to the 3V3 tolerance of
the SL6’s primary UART.

Design considerations - UART
Sierra Wireless Proprietary and Confidential
Page
While the main antenna comes out of different pads of the
SL6 and SL808x a design can be implemented to select
the line with a 0 ohm resistor on the line as per below.
The BOM of the 2G/3G units are going to be different
anyway so what problem is a 0ohm resistor going to be?
